This is a weird question, but do you have advice on starting an ask blog for a character? Like how to get noticed and how to interact with other ask blogs? Is there specific etiquette? (Besides obviously not being a jerk) Asking you because of your great Narinder ask blog.

also i might not be the best person to talk about this, the narinder askblog is only my third askblog, im still fairly new on this scene

MAKING A NEW BLOG

well, starting the blog is the easiest part, right? gather a few pictures that you like and personalize the way you like it best, the way that you think that fits the character!

for the intro post (and i really reccomend you having one, because not only it helps with making your blog look better and more organized, but also gives character and sets your boundaries), theres a few things that you can keep in mind

something that settles a personality for your character right at the top (could be a phrase, something they canonically said, maybe a picture? you name it!)

an about me section (what is the purpose of this blog? is it a roleplay blog, an askblog exclusively? who is this character? who are YOU?)

if your character is surrounded by sensitive topics or if you think that your blog could be surrounded by sensitive themes (gore, sexual themes, suicide themes, any phobias, etc.) it's good to have a few warnings in mind and put those on there for people to be aware

other than this, have fun personalizing it, maybe add a few extras, maybe songs, pictures, blinkies, anything! (i'll leave some useful resources at the bottom of this post *wink*)

now, of course, the hard part

INTERACTING AND PROPER ROLEPLAYING ETIQUETTE

this is something i personally love talking about because some younger/newbie roleplayers might not know, but there is in fact a roleplaying etiquette, but we're focusing on askblogs here, let's stay in our path and we'll get there eventually

i think my most asked question when it comes to this is how to be noticed by your community and how to interact with another bloggers

of course, the main part of being noticed is interacting! you have to understand that you can't build a flock out of just one bird, i know that this can be hard but shoot the bloggers you like an ask! send them dms, reblog posts, send asks, this is tumblr! our main feature IS sending asks!! this isnt twitter guys, come on, reblogging and sending asks is what makes we different than other social medias

if you're nervous about sending people an ask right away, you can send them a dm first, asking them if they are open to asks with other roleplayers, if theyre avaliable, theres no shame in this and i pinkie promise you that no one will hate you for this, no one is going to be mad at you

just remember, keep it respectful, keep your cool and dont push any boundaries

speaking of boundaries, we have to talk about

ROLEPLAYING ETIQUETTE

above all and everything that i say here, the MOST important part of roleplaying etiquette is that you HAVE to COMMUNICATE with your roleplaying partner

talk about your boundaries, what you do not enjoy doing in roleplay, the things you are open for, and listen to what they have to say too, this is not character AI where you can do anything for your own entertainment, we're dealing with people here, which is 100x more fun but also you gotta remember to keep it respectful

some basic grounds to stand on are:

Talk about your boundaries, and listen to your rp partner too (especially before doing anything that involves sensitive topics)

Talk about the theme of your roleplay, what you wish to do and what you want to avoid

Don't control someone else's characters for the sake of your lore (again, talk about it beforehand so you can know what works for both of you)

If we're talking about roleplay blogs, don't do anything major before talking to the parties that are involved and the parts that will be affected

Respect the other party's decision, as much as you want to be respected

Overall? Communicate and don't be a jerk

𝐇𝐎𝐖 𝐓𝐎 𝐓𝐑𝐈𝐌 𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐓𝐒 𝐎𝐍 𝐌𝐎𝐁𝐈𝐋𝐄:

this tutorial at least medium difficulty. it’s not super complicated, but you do need a basic understanding of html.

i can’t stress this enough as disclaimer you may need to ditch aesthetic formatting and icons. if you know your way around html you’ll know how to keep those but it will be dependant on how comfortable you are with html. this post isn’t a tutorial on html and there are a lot of guides out there and this is long enough.

even if you don’t know how to work around formatting if you follow this step by step you will be able shorten reblogs and reply to threads without clogging the dash and your blog.

i’ll try to make this as concise as possible so i won’t bore you with why it works the way it works, long story short it has to do with tumblr changing the dashboard to be responsive to screen size and forcing the new post editor on mobile browsers (as well as the app)

the new post editor on mobile does not support removing reblogs or html editing, both of which you need in order to trim your post and add the last reply before adding your own. even when you switch the browser view to “desktop mode” tumblr’s responsive design will adapt the regular mobile layout. 

first you’re going to login on a regular mobile browser, whichever you use the most (chrome, safari, opera, etc). i’ll refer to this browser as your main browser, you’re going to use this to edit most things later.

for now just log in there and draft your partner’s reply. don’t bother turning on the desktop mode on this browser, it won’t make a difference. only draft the post (you can draft the post from the tumblr app as well)

next you’re going to download and install the puffin browser (available on android and ios). this is the only browser that i’ve found has a true desktop mode. login here as well and make sure to turn on desktop mode on this browser. 

i’ll refer to puffin as your “trimmer” browser from now on.

open your drafts from the trimmer browser, edit the post, tap lightly on the post until the red x button shows up to remove reblogs. remove the reblogs and save the draft.

now close the trimmer browser and go back to your main browser, in my case it’s chrome. 

here you’ll find that tumblr defaulted to keeping the original first post ever. i don’t really know why it does this but you can remove it the same way you just removed the reblogs.

you’ll notice the layout looks different from the responsive design. this is because you saved the draft from the trimmer browser which forces the true desktop view, saving the post in the regular old text editor format we use on the desktop version. now html editing is supported ! 

here is where you copy and paste your partner’s last reply and add your own. again, how much of their formatting you’ll retain depends on how comfortable you are with html and how much patience you have to replicate their formatting. 

here’s the bare basic html you’ll use for a simple trimmed post:

other useful html tags you can use for simple formatting:

if you really want to include icons you can use the code <figure data-orig-height=“ICONHEIGHT” data-orig-width=“ICONWIDTH”><img src=“ICONURL” data-orig-height=“ ICONHEIGHT” data-orig-width=“ ICONWIDTH”></figure> 

replace the following as follows:

ICONHEIGHT = the height of your icon in pixels ICONWIDTH = the width of your icon in pixels ICONURL = the url of your icon

for your partner’s icon just copy the url from their reply and to add a new icon of your own on your reply i’d suggest preemptively uploading a bunch of icons to a hidden page on your blog or a drafted post from your computer so later on you can use them from your phone just copying the url the same way.

aaand that’s it! in only a few clicks you’ve successfully trimmed your post. i hope this helps!

HOW TO FORMAT YOUR REPLY ON MOBILE

As we all know, this hellsite doesn't support the html formatting on new post editor mobile regardless of our mobile browser, meaning that we can't either get our replies to keep an aesthetic or even trim our replies like those who uses their desktop for such... until now.

On March 17th, @rpclefairy blessed us with her amazing tutorial on how to trim blogs on mobile which is truly amazing and helpful. But, there was one problem. The trimming method in that tutorial isn't the same as xkit since it doesn't save your partner's reply formatting and such. With that in mind I, as a main mobile RPer, did some research on the matter and found out an easy method to save you some time!

This blog will be separated in three topics: small preparation, basic formatting and complex formatting (with icons!) and it's an easy to medium difficulty tutorial, depending on your needs.

Small preparation

We don't get to spend every day of our lives in the same computer since things gets to happen and we have to drive away from it. With that in mind, there's a small list of things you should have in your phone:

Notepad with all the spacing and cute emojis for your aesthetic

A trustworthy website for your custom font

A few icons of your preference exported to your gallery or make your own small set of icons via your mobile!

This step is optional, but if you have a set of post headers, you can always save the 'Answered' banner and a divider, if you have one!

Keep in mind that if you pick to make a small set of icons on your phone, it doesn't have to be that complex like the ones you did on your computer! But you can use this neat trick to keep the aesthetic!

Basic formatting

With everything ready, first you need to pick your partner's reply to do the trick; but it will get difficult based on your partner's style of formatting. For this tutorial, I'll be using my own rp blog since I have a diversity of mutuals.

If their formatting doesn't go further than the one used in rich text editor and they doesn't have any icons (also if your writing style matches theirs), then this'll be the easiest way to do!

Using your main browser or tumblr app, open your partner's reply, copy their reply (I suggest using your browser to copy their reply if it's more than one paragraph of length), add your own and save as draft.

Following clefairy's tutorial you will open Puffin browser (links in her tutorial as well for both android and iOS), open your partner's reply, tap lightly on the blog to remove the previous reblogs and save as draft. It'll look like this:

If there's a weird spacing in the bottom like mine, you can fix it now as well as the double blockquote glitch but I suggest you wait to fix this little issue in your normal browser.

Going back to your main browser, you can now open your drafted reply to see if everything seems alright and fix a thing here and there! If there's a top reblog, just remove it again.

Complex formatting

Now, let's say you are the type of roleplayer that always uses icons and colored text and your partner's reply has spacing and colored text. Following what I said above, you can also add your icon in your body reply that it'll automatically convert itself in a link, so there's no worry about that!

In your browser, you'll open your partner's reply before you trim it away and copy everything from the reply, then trim it. Now, open byluna's color text generator and paste your text. But be aware that it won't work correctly unless you select the third paste option with a W on it. Activating desktop mode is not necessary.

After you format everything in your partner's reply (you can also do the same on yours) there's a container below the text box with the html coding. Click Copy to Clipboard and paste everything in your drafted post and boom, you're set!

Now, let's say that both you and your partner (or only them) uses icons/dividers together with formatted text. There's two ways to do that, but both get in the same result.

After drafting their reply, if your phone supports opening an app on divided screen, you can use both your browser and Puffin at the same time. It's the same as using your computer or two monitors, let's say. This is how it looks on my phone:

Opening byluna's text generator in your main browser (or on Puffin), you can do the same trick of copying your partner's reply and paste it after opening a blockquote, but do not copy the icon too or it'll be contained and glitch your code! Instead, open your partner's icon in a separated tab and copy the link (do the same with yours), hit the little image button and paste the image url.

If your phone cannot divide like mine or you have no clue how to do so, it's not that complicated to do but it takes a little bit longer.

Before drafting your partners reply, save their icons/borders to your gallery and add them to your reply body. You can add your own as well with your reply if you wish. I suggest doing it twice for the sake of trimming only the one you are going to post afterwards.

After you trim one of the posts, go back to your main browser and copy the image link presented in the code of your draft.

Open your text generator and add your image via image url (shown below)

Format everything as you please and you're done!
