Y’know, Arti being a nickname for Artificer is actually perfect because in the army that’s what they yell when they’re being shelled. Arti is short for artillery- “arti arti arti” is quicker to say than “artillery artillery artillery” when there’s bombs about to hit you lol. So Arti in the military means “incoming explosive.” Which is basically Artificer.

-Hunter’s eye used to be pretty messed-up. He got blinded in his right eye, but NSH managed to save Hunter’s vision in an emergency surgery. There to be a mark running through his eye where it was cut, but that’s faded over time. He also wasn’t able to fully open that eye for a while after the injury, and the scar used to look thicker.
(When Hunter got his scar, Arti helped him get back to NSH and (while she won’t admit this) was actually worried about him. Considering that Hunter was covered in blood, freaking out about being half blind, in a shit ton of pain and high on shock and adrenaline her being worried about him might not seem very impressive, but it was pretty out of character for her and was sort of the first time she was ever properly nice to him.)
-While the twins were never close, they did used to sometimes have fun on missions together. This is probably when their relationship was the best, and they acted almost like friends. They both loved challenges and would sometimes make up games to play while on missions.
-They are the slugcat equivalent of being around 15-16 here (child labor moment)

This is from a human au that I made where I put all the Scugs in high school lol. It’s a long and complicated au but basically the only reason I made it was because I wanted to draw Karmaflower as pretty girls in prom dresses and my nerodivergent ass couldn’t handle drawing that without making a giant au and backstory behind it lmao
anyways this art is super old and looking at old art makes me want to cry but WHATEVER here’s the Karmaflower as pretty girls at prom drawing I made 😭 (the brainrot is too strong someone save me)
I was rlly proud of this when I made it and I think it’s kinda ugly now but I don’t care I’m inflicting it on all of you

At first I thought I wouldn’t have Saint wear earrings again because they never wanted them in the first place, but then something something reclaiming something forced on you by a controlling/abusive parent and using it as a way to express yourself and now I’m crying
They just look so happy idk man
ANYWAYS not to be emotional or anything lol uhhhhh yeah their new earrings were made out of lizard teeth by Arti (short for Artist I guess since she can make jewlery now.) Having earrings that aren’t like super fancy or pretty sort of represents that Saint doesn’t have to be perfect anymore. Currently in the story even though Saint and Inv got away from their mom, Saint is still extremely anxious all the time because of how strict she was with them. They will eventually heal, they just need some time and some unconditional love, which they’ll get from their amazing sibling and eventual girlfriend (once said gf heals enough from her own trauma to have a healthy relationship lol)
Arti: So why do you always wear stuff on your head anyways?
Saint: I, uh… have this….
Saint: Scar! O-On my forehead. That I’m embarrassed of.
Arti (messing with them): What’s wrong with scars?
Saint: No no I didn’t mean it like that! Your face looks great! You’re so beautiful!
Arti: You think I’m beautiful?
I wasn't asked. But I did. And I did. A few comforting and protective hugs for saint

Neither Inv or Arti were ready for that kind of responsibility and the people they were trying to protect ended up getting hurt, and it was partially their fault.
Arti tried to keep her pups safe, but they ended up dying because she turned away for just a moment and her pup grabbed a pearl. Was it the scavenger’s fault? Yes. But is it something she hated and blamed herself for? Definitely.
Inv tried to keep Saint safe, but ended up forcing Saint to ascend Sliver which really damaged their mental health (taking a life does that to you, especially if you didn’t want to). Was it Bountiful’s fault? One hundred percent. But is it something that Inv felt really awful about? Absolutely.
Obviously their situations are very different, but there are some significant parallels that they both had to be parents before they were ready, and they both messed up.

Plus in other posts you can see her slowly getting nicer. :) (except to Hunter. They still don’t get along lol)
Believe it or not, Arti did feel a little bit of guilt when she left Hunter. Anyways, uh, parallels between when she abandoned him and when she found him again. You can probably tell that both of their lives went way downhill after this by comparing what they look like in the older drawing to what they look like in this one lol.
Okay, I know I said I was gonna make art for Inv and Saint instead of Hunter and Arti again, but I really wanted to draw this one scene from my au lol

For those who don’t want to see that (fair enough) It’s basically Arti encountering Hunter having a not very good time while she’s on a hunting mission for the colony. This is the first time she’s seen him since she abandoned him btw.

A bit about Arti’s characterization!
NSH wasn’t the type of parent to sit his kids down and explain the importance of kindness, and treating others how you want to be treated. None of that “sharing is caring” stuff they teach you in kindergarten. Nobody ever told Arti that it was wrong to be mean to other people. That was her dad’s job.
(I see this all the time, mostly in entitled guys. They never got told off for being jerks when they were kids because “boys will be boys”, and now they’re assholes. You have to teach kids right and wrong.)
Arti struggles with empathy. She can’t easily understand what other people are feeling, or how her actions might impact another person emotionally. She’s impulsive, and often acts before she thinks. When she lost her kids, she didn’t know how to process her grief. She doesn’t have the best emotional intelligence, so all those feelings were too much for her, and she went a tiny bit crazy.
Basically, she reacted with so much violence because she didn’t have any sort of “hurting people is bad” notion ingrained in her moral code that would have stopped her.
It isn’t Arti’s fault that she’s always so quick to be violent, but that doesn’t make it okay. She’s an adult now, and it’s her responsibility to learn how to be a better person.

I wanted draw her wearing her combat gear, but its kinda tricky lol.
So, basically she's got this bandanna which she uses if when she starts blowing things up (for the smoke and dust). because she sometimes yeets herself around using explosives (don't try this at home) she's got an impact vest (it protects your ribs from breaking if you land hard) as well as knee pads and elbow pads. her wrists and hands are wrapped for hand to hand fighting and to protect her palms from falls, and she's got some heavy combat boots for stomping lol. i gave her some little bags for grenades or whatever she carries around. Like every single humanization i've ever made for Arti, she has emo hair.
Anyways, I really wanted to draw a character decked out in an epic I'm-about-to-beat-you-up fit, so even if it isnt really like canon Arti that much, she looks cool and that's all that matters lmfao.

Saint is functionally useless in any combat situation, so when shit starts to go down Arti just grabs them and fights one-handed lmao

I don't really have a design for him yet lol, but I'm not NSH, I couldn't forget about one of my favourite silly little guys! I doodled this cause I think it'd be funny if he and Arti just hated each other in every single au I make lmao

Design rant time!!!!
Hunter is strong, but he doesn't have the same intimidating presence as Arti. He's built more for agility and strategic fighting, whereas she's built for brute-forcing her way through combat and beating the shit out of anything that blocks her path. Her features are a little bigger than Hunter's too- she has a stronger nose, thicker eyebrows, broader shoulders etc. I really wanted her to take up space, like she isn't sorry to be the way she is. You can kinda see the difference between the two of them in their poses here. Arti's arms are at her sides, which makes her look bigger, but Hunter's more closed in on himself and making himself smaller. She's looking at him, and he's looking away. Saint is just kind of there, stuck in the middle lmao. I love them.
Anyways, I'll probably make a proper Hunter design at some point, but this is what we have so far lol.
