I don't know if it has been established what part of Spain is Mariana from because I haven't listened to all the episodes yet, but given her surname (Ametxazurra) I'm 99% sure she's from the Basque Country.

And that led me to this headcanon: the moment John starts picking up Spanish and understanding what she's saying, Mariana will start speaking in basque. Basque is a language that, if you didn't know, is one of the hardest and oldest in Europe.
