Helpless.

Sunny wanted to take Harmony by the shoulders—give her something solid to hold onto—while she told her everything would be okay. But Harmony looked skittish, like a wounded animal, and even if she allowed the comfort, for once, Sunny had none to give. All the words Sunny wanted to spill selfishly clung to her throat, burning the insides of her mouth with shame, and fear.

Conflicted between wanting to finish my first draft as soon as possible, and not wanting to deal with all the editing at the end…

Regret.

Goosebumps broke out on Sunny’s arms. A familiar trace of magic, masked with the essence of youth, raced through the air. The pungent waves came from the girl in the worn overalls. Sunny’s mouth went dry when a blue glow radiated off the girl’s raised palm, causing the butterball nuts to be lifted from her grasp, floating.

“I gotcha something,” the girl said, sounding pleased with herself.

No, Sunny backed into a tree, it’s not real. It couldn’t be, because Sunny knew how the scene ended, it had played in her mind, nonstop, for years.

Sunny tried running away when two grass-made ropes burst from the soil, and ensnared her legs. They anchored her in place.

A splat of black goop landed a couple inches from their feet and chewed into the ground with a hiss. It left behind a shallow cavity in its wake. Sunny lifted her head. A slitherback, about the size of a house, hung upside down, high above them on the roof of the cave. Its snake-like body twisted between the free spaces of the stalactites. Dozens of black, concave, pouches rested underneath its scaled belly. The pouches throbbed, sporadic. Are those its eggs? Sunny felt her heartbeat spike in rhythm. She and Harmony stood underneath a dozing slitherback, in its nest.

More flashes of light came from the floating light-orbs, causing the beast to stir. Sunny squeezed the flagpole so tight the wood cut into her palm. It was only a matter of time before the slitherback roused from its slumber and sought them out. But maybe they could escape before that happened.

“Okay,” Sunny whispered, “m-maybe I can reach the orbs somehow and freeze them before they—”

“Mage.” All the color had drained from Harmony’s face.

The knots in Sunny’s stomach returned. She was afraid to ask, “What?”

“The flags,” Harmony’s voice trembled, “they’re stuck in its back.”

Sunny whipped her head up to see for herself. Six flags, in lines of three, were lodged into the slitherback’s spine.

“Fuck.” Sunny muttered.

Partners.

“The what?” Sunny and Harmony asked, perplexed.

“That’s what they’re callin’ you.” Aiden pulled up a short snippet to a virtual newspaper clipping on his T-watch.

THE HORN AND THE HALO

Harmony Eaglewood and Sunny Mage have formed an unmatched, unlikely duo. With a legacy to uphold, the Eaglewood Princess isn't pulling any punches. She brings the right amount of grit, and tenacity, the pair needs to soar towards the semi-finals. But the team isn't one-sided. Redstone's Wildcard [Sunny Mage] comes with her own arsenal. Mage has a knack for coming up with quick, creative solutions, when backed into a corner.

“Whoa,” Sunny exclaimed. “They gave us a team name!”

“Why’m I the horn in this scenario?” Harmony huffed.

“I mean…”

Harmony shot her a dirty look. “Shut it, Mage.”

Ideas.

Two light-orbs flew towards them. Sunny jumped to her feet, “Catch it!”

“What?” Axel exclaimed.

Sunny grabbed the one on the right. “Gotcha.” Thundering vibrations shot through her hands as the orb tried buzzing out her grasp.

Axel managed to snag the second orb at the last minute. “Do I wanna ask?”

“These things work like a hive mind, right? If their buzzing gets insane then we’ll know they’re close to reaching the hive. So we can use this like a metal detector, and—”

“—let them lead us to the others.”

Sunny shuddered. Finding Aiden just jumped to the top of her priority list. No way would she have Axel finishing her sentences.

Fear.

The door nearly ripped off its hinges. “Harmony!” two voices, layered on top of each other, shouted.

Harmony’s nails dug into her arm. Sunny frowned, “What—”

“You can’t be here.” Harmony raced to the door and put her back against it. Magic seeped out from her palms and shot into the mahogany. A red-tinted barrier covered the door. “Get out.” she begged, eyes frantic and bulged.

Sunny wished she could. Wished she had the power to vanquish the shame, and despair lingering in Harmony’s eyes. Wished she had the strength to honor Harmony’s plead—to escape from the room before Dream Weaver came in to expose Harmony’s greatest fear. But Axel and Aiden had blocked their only exit.

So Sunny had no words. Nothing that would make the situation better. All she could do was try and relay her emotions through her eyes. I’m so sorry.

A booming knock sounded at the door. Harmony’s barrier bursted to smithereens.
