i'm sorry i know it's been talked about before but i need to talk about This again ↓
it's such a famous destiel scene for a reason. this reaction is so very interesting to me bc dean's (or jensen's) body language is so revealing here. his leg drawing inward, his hand movement, the way his whole posture changes as if to conceal something. like i really wanna know what the stage direction was for this scene, bc if it wasn't "appear suddenly very aroused" then idk wtf they were going for bc that's what we got. especially when you compare dean's reaction to sam's, which seems more like just normal surprise and acknowledgment
and then also this expression ↓
to me this screams "oh fuck he's hot but act cool act cool sam is watching"
like??? if this wasn't dean getting turned on by cas, then it was jensen accidentally letting his attraction to misha bleed into dean
And lo, all my fanfiction instincts kicked in halfway through season 8.
I adore Amanda Tapping. This is the first time in decades of viewing her characters that she's made my skin crawl. Great performance and some great eps as director, too.
Forget skinwalkers and the devil. Naomi scared the crap out of me by freaking Cas out that badly and smiling like that. We've seen Castiel all kinds of messed up by this point, but never helpless. (And then we found out it's her job to torture and brainwash angels back to their robotic factory settings by drilling into their head while they're still conscious. Aieee!)

Wow, I loved seeing Cas go all kickass angelic on Crowley there.
Not a card any show can play too often, a powerful character actually letting rip with their superpowers - which explains why Cas spends so much of Supernatural at varying levels of diminished ability. He couldn't be around so much of the time otherwise, short of some convoluted "...but I'm sworn never to interfere with the affairs of mortals..." MacGuffin that would've made him even more emotionally constipated and angsty than he was.
In this episode, Cas is shown to be severely drained by using his usual power first to smite a demon, then fly/teleport a very short distance. Both efforts leave him swaying on his feet and breathless. But then he does this. Full badass glowy angel mode (more or less - bit wobbly). It's not his usual style, that's for sure.
I love that I couldn't tell if this moment was Cas bluffing big with his last reserves of strength - a lightshow to intimidate Crowley before it came to a physical fight that Cas wasn't confident of winning in his current condition - or if he was capable of actually following through and smiting everything in sight. (I love that Crowley generally errs on the side of, "Yeah, nope, bye!")
Is Naomi limiting Cas' powers as well as scrambling his poor brain at this point? Is that why he had trouble appearing fully to Dean at the start of the ep? Lashing out to smash the tablet and scare Crowley leaves Cas on the floor, so his physical strength seems diminished too.
I can't remember if the season ever explained the extent of Naomi's hold over him, nor how much she was letting him remember between their meetings - how much he was conscious of as she marched him about doing her bidding. I got the impression their 'first meeting' at the end of this ep, the scene were we the audience first meet Naomi, wasn't the start of her hands-on influence over Cas - just the first time he became aware of it during the episode.
