Supernatural was insane because what do you mean that Dean Winchester was on his knees, not fighting back, telling Cas that he loved needed him??? And the walls of Naomi's office turned bisexual???

I love when Supernatural gave zero fucks about subtlety. Because what do you mean Cas was programmed into ruthlessly killing hundreds of Deans and the total of zero Sams???

It's as if the entire Heaven KNEW

I would just like to point out that Cas absolutely did not need to cup Dean's face like that to heal him.
This mission Naomi's given Cas doesn't require Dean to die - a whack on the head or the angelic sleepydrops would get it done. This is still Naomi trying to purify and refine her clockwork soldier Castiel by having him destroy the source of his rebellion. It's Naomi's proof of concept.
I still can't decide if her intention was as cruel as her methods, motivated by anger or disgust or whatever at any angel putting their faith in any human; or if it's specific to Dean because he's been such a disobedient pain in Heaven's backside; or if she's too caught up in the brainwashed Heaven herself to see that Cas isn't just wavering here - he's terrified and completely losing it. He's being torn in two by the conflict she's induced. And it's her lack of understanding, the violation and betrayal, that winds up prompting Cas to go on the lam with the tablet, convinced he has to protect it from everyone, leaving both her and Dean behind. Naomi got Castiel's breaking point very wrong.
I need fanfic about all this. Yiss.

8.17 Goodbye Stranger
Naomi's so pleased with her warehouse full of Dean corpses and her cookie-cutter clockwork soldier. It'd be nice to see an angel so happy if not for, you know, the warehouse full of Dean corpses and the dead-eyed Castiel.
I wondered during this ep if Naomi was capable of understanding why, to Cas, after all that desensitising slaughter, there's still a difference between those training avatars and the real Dean; why it worked in training but failed on the ground. Why Dean was able to reach Cas and survive. Why Cas ultimately took a third path that she was incapable of anticipating.
Now I'm wondering how many of the other "dick" angels Naomi's brainwashing department moulded into such inflexible hammers - if she understands the role her work played in leaving Heaven weakened against any enemy possessing imagination, passion, or flexibility of thought.

8.17 Goodbye Stranger
there are so many batshit crazy, beautiful, tragic, heartbreaking, funny (and everything in between) destiel quotes that make me feel like i could eat a brick, and i don’t know if it’s because s5 and s8 are my favorites, but i always ALWAYS come back to that one scene in 8x17 goodbye stranger.
specifically:
“what broke the connection?”
because how do you explain to the man you know better than even he himself ever could—that knows YOU better than anyone, even your heavenly brethren, ever could—that despite their best efforts, and despite being made to kill hundreds if not thousands of copies of him just to ensure you can actually complete the task, all it took to break you out of your brainwashing was the knowledge that the man you would (and have) died for needs you?
how do you begin to explain that you have—far from the first time and far from the last—rebelled against heaven because the man you’ve known for such an incomprehensibly short time in an angel’s life span needs you?
i’m not saying it’s the best deancas quote, because that would probably have to go to either something in s5-6 or the love confession, but it’s the quote that i think about most often, because it’s the most perfect summary of their relationship, from the first bud of their friendship right up until the bitter end.
it’s castiel, devout in his love and his loyalty to dean winchester, defying his multi-millennia years old family, for a man he’s only known a couple years. comparatively, i’ve had spiders live in my bathroom for longer than castiel would have known dean in his lifetime.
dean, on his knees, bloodied, beaten, begging for mercy, but not for himself. no, he’s begging cas to wake up because even in the short time they’ve known each other, even though castiel betrayed him, even though castiel abandoned him in purgatory for a year, even though castiel let go of dean’s hand to stay behind so dean could escape purgatory safely, and even though castiel broke the wall in sam’s mind, he’s still castiel, the goofy angel who made a stripper cry, the same castiel who called his archangel brother an “assbutt,” the same castiel who took on the damage he inflicted on sam even though it drove him mad, and the same castiel who told dean, “i’m hunted, i rebelled, and i did it, all of it, for you.”
those hands that bloodied his perfect face are the same ones that rebuilt dean atom-by-atom. they’re the same hands that have healed dean more times than he can count, and will many times again. castiel has the blade in his hand; all it would’ve taken was him bringing it down and into dean’s chest, but instead, he hears dean’s voice telling him he needs him, and the connection is broken.
“i know you’re in there. i know you can hear me.”
he is, he can. why do you think it took killing so many fake dean’s to even get to this point? how many times would you have to kill a copy of someone you love before you could kill the real them?
after seeing so many fake deans die, you’d think the sight of him beaten and bloodied wouldn’t be as difficult to stomach as it was. one of his green eyes were swollen shut. half of his face was covered in bruises and speckled with blood.
“cas, it’s me. we’re family. we need you. i need you.”
dean has never been good with vulnerability. john beat it out of him from an early age. dean was never allowed to have vulnerabilities. he doesn’t even open himself up to sam or bobby most of the time. he tells himself it’s the fact that castiel was the one who raised him from hell, but he’s finally coming around to accept that that’s not true. it’s that, but it’s so much more. we’re family…i need you.
“you have to choose, castiel. us or them.”
do not give that man an ultimatum, because he will choose dean winchester every single time.
“i’m so sorry, dean.”
“what the hell just happened?”
“naomi has been controlling you since she got you out of purgatory?”
“yeah.”
“what broke the connection?”
“i don’t know.”
i honestly believe him sometimes too. i think castiel knows he’s compromised when it comes to dean, but he’s an angel, a celestial being who has only ever known the worship of his father. he’s never known what love is, what it feels like, how it can change you. but it’s okay because one days, years from now, he’ll know those feelings well and tell them to the best thing that ever happened to him so that he can save his life.
season 8 is such a beautiful season for them i swear :’)
