We kept saying that TLJ was Rian’s fanfic, but turns out it may not even be his own fanfic…. maodkdkdkdkdjjskskfjfjzkdvfvffbkddk

In regards to any post-RotJ canon, old or new;

RotJ doesn’t just have a happy ending - it’s the closing of a book, and it’s both a promise and a reassurance; it’s all right now. It’ll be fine.

That’s the point, that’s the whole and complete point to this saga, it’s all right now. All the horror and the wrongs and the darkness might not have been completely vanquished, can’t be undone, but going forward, it’ll be all right.

The special editions addition of those over-the-galaxy celebrations and Palpatine’s statue being torn down merely reinforce this reassurance-promise; it’s all right, on a galactic scale. It’s all right.

(Logically, the Empire isn’t defeated yet, realistically it’ll take more time than this. But this isn’t about realism!)

So, you know. I, and anyone else, who takes that canon reassurance and promise and accepts nothing less than that? We’re in our rights to do so, whether we’re feeling betrayed by Legends or the new canon. We can think it’s ooc and that this wouldn’t happen, for several reasons, but the bottom line, even with additional struggles that don’t mean killing what we’ve come to love and razing it?

We were promised it was all right, and as RotJ ended the saga (regardless of Legends or new canon), that’s the promise and reassurance we can take as the end point. Take anything from old or new canon that we like and twist or drop and protest the rest.

I genuinely didn't think The Acolyte would kill Jecki or Yord, not at just barely past the halfway point, and I had to stop and think about why I felt so disappointed by it. It's not really about the deaths of characters I enjoyed--though, I definitely said, "Welp. There goes about 60% of the reason I cared about this show at all." in the most exhausted voice you can imagine--because I can respect a show's decision to kill off a character, especially in a High Republic show, but I still had to wonder about what the point of them even was. What was the point of including Jecki and Yord in the show? I kept thinking about the comments their actors made about their characterization and it all felt so misaligned from what's actually on the screen, there's cute banter and fun moments of care and some badass fights, but neither character really went through anything, there was no character growth because they didn't have time for it. There was just no character arc there at all. So were they only there to be cute and die for the show to tell us that Darf Teefs was Real Bad News? Maybe if I'd had more time with them, more than just four and a half episodes, it might feel like there was a point to them being in the story, beyond just there to die, but right now it really feels like that's all they were there for. And if the show doesn't really care about giving them any kind of real story, it's a lot harder for me to be invested in any of this, either. Maybe I'll come around on it, but my initial reaction is very much feeling like I just got a whole lot of my emotional investment in the show handed right back to me.

I think Ahsoka has been overcooked and undercooked in Filoni’s brain at the same time, I think he’s spent so long thinking about this story he wants to tell that he’s no longer writing the connections that the story needs, that those of us outside his brain haven’t had the last ten years of simmering with to assimilate into our background noise, while also I think he hasn’t spent enough time really digging into the smaller details. Sabine’s character is the epitome of this for me–there’s clearly so much thought he’s given her in this show, the little details in that room that are so packed full you’d need to pause the video to see everything, where you can see Ezra’s helmet or Sabine’s helmet on the quick pan through the scene, where the scene she cuts her hair is a callback to Kanan cutting his hair as he’s ready to step back onto a new path, the Ezra hologram that was specifically for her, she’s allowed to be angry and messy, etc., you can’t say that Filoni didn’t give her a ton of thought! But she’s also undercooked in this show because there’s this entire relationship she had with Ahsoka that takes place off-screen and dramatically changes their dynamic without acknowledging that it’s a change for us, the audience. And there’s an entire motivation for “Why the hell does Sabine want to be a Jedi?” and “Why did Sabine set aside her Mandalorian armor?” that’s just not there because I think Felony has spent so much time thinking about Sabine’s journey, about her connection to Ezra and how to weave Ahsoka as a mentor (because of Ahsoka’s own issues with masters and apprentices, he wants to play on those themes), that he’s been writing this in his head since he first finished the Rebels finale’s script, that he’s no longer writing it on the actual paper for us the audience. I can’t shake the feeling that he’s spent too long with this story in his head, so he’s just made connections that have become part of the scenery for him, like, of course Sabine set aside her armor, of course Sabine was training with Ezra’s lightsaber with Jedi training, of course she’s Ahsoka’s Padawan, meanwhile I just finished watching Rebels and am going, “Dave, what the hell are you talking about, none of that was in the show I just finished speedrunning to watch this show!”

Disney, hire me as your Attachment Advisor, I will shove so many George Lucas quotes at your producers and writers, I will shove so many context-laden clips from the movies and TCW at your creatives, I will make powerpoint essays about how it's more Buddhist-aligned, not Attachment Theory-aligned, I will cite literally every time attachment has ever been discussed by Lucas AND in the show itself and show you that it's always aligned with fear, possessive feelings, and selfishness, I will do this work for you for free, I can even literally just point you to my Jedi Citations collection, DISNEY, HIRE ME AS YOUR ATTACHMENT ADVISOR, I CAN HELP YOU.

Okay so random tangent, but whoever approved the idea for ST to just kill off the entire New Jedi Order and revert everything back to basically a New Hope deserves to be fired. Like there was so much potential and it was all wasted to basically repeat the OT but just like messier. I don’t hate the ST I am just so fucking disappointed.
