What if the connection between Sarah Alder and Tally Craven stretched beyond a Simple Biddy bond? What if there were some other higher works at play? Soulbond pairs are rare and powerful. They are highly regarded and considered blessed beyond measure. How Will a Soulbond Between a General and a Cadet change the world?
We are drawn to morally grey characters because they resemble us. We see parts of ourselves in them. We all fuck up, every single one of us, yet every single case is unique and different cause every single one of us is unique and different. When watching a movie, or a tv show, we get to judge the characters not only from their actions, but most importantly from their intentions, their perspective. All these thoughts came to me because of Gen. Alder in Motherland Fort Salem. Many of us seem to like her, even though she has fucked up, big time, several times.
Bojack is the most relatable character in a show, the horse is us, we are the horse, in ways that resemble our life, our actions in our life, the mistakes we make unintentionally, the times we misjudged situations and people. We fuck up, sometimes even when we intend to do good.
Our actions do not cover an extended amount of responsibility, the bigger the responsibility, the bigger the mistake, right? Sarah Alder's responsibility far outweighs everything else in her life. She is responsible, for everyone. That's why we end up caring for her, even when she makes decisions that enrage us. She is, complex, and by far the most interesting character in the show.
It's not about making a decision about yourself and your life, it's about making a decision about everyone's life. For the exact same reasons we love Joel in the Last Of Us. To me, that example is the one of the most well crafted morally ethical questions ever. Sarah Alder, well, she could be the doctor in that case, couldn't she? Alder is the doctor, and we are Joel. Maybe that's why we cannot hate her. And most of us really, don't get mad over someone's mistake, we get mad over the lies, over the fact that people tend to act indifferent towards them, like they don't matter. They lie about them like they don't matter. It's the reason i first called Sarah Alder a bitch. Do you guys remember in the first season, after City Drop, the death of the civilians in the girls' mission? I felt awful, but the reason i got enraged was that she lied about it at her Press Statement at the end of the episode. It's the first time i questioned her. Maybe i even hated her a bit in that moment. Then i remembered, for 300 years she had to make decisions like these.
When my Grandpa was sick, really sick, me and my mom would just accompany him at the hospital for the chemotherapy. We would stay there for several days, and at first, i couldn't eat. The atmosphere there, the vibe. There was so much death around us because most people there were in terminal condition, and i couldn't eat. After going several times, let's say, after a couple of months, well, guys, i swear, people were dying next to me, and i was eating. My point is, the older you get, the more experienced you become, and the more tolerance you grow for the "monster", no matter it's shape. The older we become, the more we are getting used to everything, even the bad stuff. We are getting used to the bad stuff. Sarah Alder has, for 300, she has been putting up with the "monster".
Tally Craven represents the youth in this moral conflict. The youngers are important, we always have to listen to them, and respect, and protect them. We all know why. Young people react more. Young people haven't yet accepted the fact that "that's life, shit happens". They get disappointed, they rebel, they want their future to be better, they need everyone's future to be better, kinder. The youth is not old enough to resemble the monster, they are not even old enough to tolerate it. Stay young at heart people, try to stay young at heart.
The morals here, the representation, there are so many layers in this, this relationship is so complex, and so unexplored, god, please writers, don't waste the potential here.
Tally girl, you are in love. Now go save your girlfriend before it's too late.
Sorry for the long post, if you read up to this point, thank you. Stay safe everyone.
I am in need of a face to face conversation with Tally and Alder. Tally addressing the fact that Alder was going to kill her, she would have killed her if not for the interference of her unit. Imagine all of the angst, and the sapphic energy and the remorse and the hurt and everything 🙄
Alder was walking with her head down, and her chest aching. She had this heavy burden spreading from her heart to the tips of her fingers. She didn't know what to expect, so she decided to expect nothing . She was about to see Tally again. Tally who had saved her life twice already. Disgust rose in her, and at that moment, she hated herself just enough to make her feet stop moving. She stopped walking, she stayed there staring at the closed door she was approaching. Tally was behind that door and suddenly, she felt like running at the opposite direction. She wanted to flee the scene and her need to turn around was piercing through her bones. It was shame. She thought to herself how she almost hurt her, how she almost hurt Tally and this thought felt unbearable. How could she possibly hurt Tally, how could she ever act with so much anger and hatred towards the only person that made her feel warm, and safe, and understood. It made her feel like she was not on her own anymore. Alder stayed there, utterly frozen, hoping for her misery to be put into an end. She didn't care how the world viewed her, but she cared about how the girl behind this door was feeling about her, so, with her courage cut into a million pieces, she stayed. The decision was taken by gathering all of her honor, and bravery, she inhaled a deep breath, all of the pieces scattered around her came back to her, she picked up every single one of them off the floor and by the time she decided to move forward, the door in front of her opened.
Tally didn't expect to see Alder again, at least, she didn't expect to see her so soon, not here, not now. She looked at her and tears were about to water her eyes, but she kept her composition with pride, and love.
"General."
Listening to Tally's voice calling her like that made Alder weak to her knees, and the only thing she managed to say with her voice being so low that resembled a mumble, were words filled with pain, not for what they meant, but for what caused them. Pain for what she had done.
"Please don't call me that anymore".
Neither of them moved. Tally's whole body and existance were hurting, she didn't know what to say to Alder, she didn't even know where to begin. She was in so much pain in that moment that she hadn't noticed how much Alder was hurting. Because Alder was hurting, more than Tally. All of this was her fault, and she knew it. She was carrying the guilt within ever since that day. And it felt heavier with every day, with every hour, with every minute. She was, at that point, exhausted.
Alder made a few steps in her attempt to get closer to Tally and the fear in the young girl's eyes made her once more, stop. She hated herself even more, and more, and more with every second passing.
"I am not Alder, Tally. I am Sarah."
The words came out of her mouth without much thinking.
Tally didn't want to do this. She didn't want to have this conversation. She got close to Sarah, who sensed her denial. It was like a wall was built between them. And it was the first time Alder called Tally by her name, and the young woman couldn't help it anymore.
"Please leave"
She didn't believe what she just said. Alder's dispair was visible in her eyes. She didn't even reach for her, and with her energy all drained up she just replied with a whisper.
"Is that what you want?"
Tears were falling, Tally's tears, that made Alder's heart break once more. This was all her fault, this was all her fault. She didn't say anything, she waited patiently for Tally to respond. They both stayed there gazing at each other for a few moments.
"You were going to kill me. You would have if not for my unit. You would have killed me."
Alder was crying, she was crying in front of Tally, for Tally.
"Please, please don't say that, don't say that, i would never, i would never hurt you like that"
"Yes you would, you were about to."
A brief thought crossed Alder's mind. She shouldn't have come. This was a mistake, this was another mistake and she was breathing with tears falling from her cheeks. She didn't deserve anything, she was hurting Tally again.
"Accuse me of anything you want, but not for this. It's not true. I would never."
Tally's voice was shaking, Tally was shaking. It took her a lot of time to respond but when she did, she knew exactly what to say.
"Why did you lie to me? You didn't have to lie to me."
There was so much love in her voice that Sarah almost run to her. She touched her neck, she caressed her hair behind her ear and she wiped the tears from her face. She held her head up so they could see each other in the eye.
Amidst tormented sighs and crying she replied
"I know, i know, i am so sorry, i am sorry Tally, for everything, i would never hurt you, i would never. I am sorry, please, please forgive me."
Tally hugged her, she embraced all of Alder, her past, her present and her future, all of her scars and all of the bleeding wounds she was still carrying within.
Holding as much of her as possible she continued
"You didn't have to lie to me Sarah. Why would you lie to me?"
Alder felt, little, tiny. In that moment she felt unworthy of the woman she was holding, like she didn't deserve any of this, any of her.
"I am sorry, i am, i am so sorry"
She couldn't speak anymore, she was just crying her heart out and Tally was holding her tight and close to her.
They stayed like this for a while. Alder was the first to pull away and Tally got surprised. She straightened up her pride and said to her
"I am sorry for all of the pain i caused to you. It was never my intention. I came to apologize to you, not ask for forgiveness, just to apologize to you."
Tally was looking at her. Her everything was melting, because she loved her, and she knew it.
The older woman looked at the young one thinking this was going to be the last time. She was about to leave the country and serve elsewhere. By not wanting to cause any more pain to her she took a step back and said with all of the love she had for her
"It was an honor meeting you, Tally Craven".
She turned around, keeping her tears from running once more and started walking away from her. She was smiling melancholically when she heard Tally's voice
"Sarah. Please. Stay."

"Revolution today is the preservation of tenderness". Χρόνης Μίσσιος, a greek author once wrote. I need fanfics with this title, guys 🙄
We are okay with casual sex, we are okay with one night stands, but how is Tally's casual sex or Tally's one night stands relevant to the story and the plot of this show? These scenes are not even beneficial for her growth as a character, and the show doesn't really put its focus on indifferent human interactions, and yes a relationship may start like this and end up being loving and solid, eventually, but this needs time to grow, the timing of this makes no sense, the screenplay doesn't even point at this direction all season long. It just, it feels rushed, that's all.
Ok Switches I feel like we need to talk. I see some disturbing attitudes when it comes to the fact that Tally hooked up with Gregorio . Now nobody is forcing you to like it but the sheer judgment I see is not right . Is Tally in love with Alder ? That doesn’t matter . She could be completely in love with Alder and still decide to unwind and have sex with Gregorio and cuddle . Having casual sex with someone you like and feel safe around with is perfectly healthy, normal and fits not only with the established sex positive culture of witches but also fits with Tally’s character ( our girl is horny. always has been)
And yes the same would have applied to Raelle . If after she broke up with Scylla she had decided to have sex with someone to relax and feel better it would have been perfectly normal and ok.
I get that a lot of you especially Americans comes from more conservative cultures and for you love and sex and inextricably linked and the thought of having casual sex with someone while you are in love with someone else is unthinkable and that is ok. Nobody is forcing you but you really need to stop projecting your personal issues onto characters and an universe that has a different attitude towards sex
