chapter seven: mama, there's wolves in the house
Again, maybe if the situation had been different, she would’ve argued with him, and insisted on keeping watch for a change. But not this time. This time she was just too tired, a different kind of tired. Tired like after she’d watched her momma stumble out of the barn and then get shot in the head. She took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and let herself fall into the dark.

Despite his reluctance, Daryl grows closer to Liam. A close encounter with another group brings back unwanted memories for Beth.

“I don’t know if you didn’t hear me, but in case you didn’t, it doesn’t matter what I want anymore,” she said, her voice going up an octave.
Daryl stood up and stared down at her. He needed to move. The stillness, the lack of air, of motion, it all hurt.
“I heard you loud and clear,” he said, taking his own voice up a notch. “Just havin’ trouble understandin’ cause what you’re sayin’ don’t make any goddamn sense!”

chapter twelve: love, i have wounds only you can mend

“Be quick,” she said. “Please.”
He nodded. “I will.”
They stood there for a moment, staring at each other. There was more to say, but neither of them was ready to say it. Instead, Beth threw herself against him into a tight, begging hug. He didn’t go limp. He wrapped one arm around her, while his other hand came around to cup the back of her head. Sometimes it hit them all over again that every goodbye could be the last.

Her smile faltered. Liam’s eyes were heavy-lidded and watery, not exactly like he was going to cry, more like he just wasn’t all there. Beth groped for the right words, but she couldn’t find them.
“Yeah,” she finally said.
“Did my dad become a biter?”

“Girl, the kid’s five, for chrissake,” he said, then glanced toward the sliding doors and lowered his voice. “The only thing he wants is his momma, and we both know that ain’t happenin’.”

Of course, he cared about Liam, he wanted the boy to like him, to trust him, but he never expected this—to be able to make him laugh. To chase him. To throw a snowball at him. To not scare him. He never would’ve laughed if his own father threw a snowball at him, even if he hadn’t intended to hurt him. The possibility of hurt was always there. But such a thing didn’t even occur to Liam. There was no fear, no apprehension. Just delight.

Hiiii! I briefly leave my little cave to tell you that @deerdens just published the epilogue of one of the most beautiful and detailed stories I have read. And I'm not just saying it because she's my friend, but because she's talented, careful and loves bethyl in such an insightful way… Few authors are as respectful and loving with the characters (all of them, not only Beth and Daryl) as Gabi does. TANPFNH is pure bethyl, a new classic i would say... So, to celebrate, i did this little drawing of adult Nora Dixon. I hope you guys get to love her as much as i do... Thank you my wonderful friend for everything you give us, and everything you give me! You are a delight of an artist and of human being.
