For someone to look at me like Charles from The Brothers Sun looked at that damn churro
Bruce has utilized his younger sibling energy to maximum effect in The Brothers Sun. His brother is an infamous, lethal assassin, whose mere reputation is enough to scare the most hardened criminals. Bruce gets him to do what he wants by threatening to snitch to their mom. Does in fact snitch and gets Charles—again, a deadly assassin—in trouble for hitting him. Later he convinces another criminal, this one unrelated to him, who also kidnapped him, to divulge her tragic backstory so he can express his sympathy and then invite her to family dinner instead of fighting his brother to the death. That’s his sister now.
Within the span of one quality time montage and like a week of hanging out together, his emotionally stunted brother becomes a softie who lets Bruce drag him into a karaoke duet and invite his girlfriend to their secret safehouse, even after the other gangsters point out what a bad idea that is. Who else is doing it like him.
There has been so much discussion about Charles but can we talk about Bruce's character?
Yes I love a good 'bad guy has a soft side and is good deep down' plot as much as the last tumblrina but something about 'good guy with a heart of gold has the potential to be the Worst Villain Ever' hits so good. It's also why I love El from The Scholomance.
When Big Sun called him 'intelligent, strategic, and ruthless,' that could have been such an empty throwaway villain line, but it wasn't because despite the cliché of a villain telling the hero (especially when they're father and son) that he's evil deep down in a showdown being, well, cliché, it has actual weight because Bruce is those things, and he doesn't deny those characteristics or push them away, but in fact he uses those to great effect.
The way he (spoiler) defeats Big Sun by forcing him to dig his own grave is absolutely ruthless genius. A character that's good and ruthless... now that's a mix of character traits with amazing conflicts, and one that we don't see often.
