The Dance Community - Tumblr Posts
Hi, same person from earlier. 10 years! That’s crazy. I’ve only been doing this for 3 years and I got into it because of high school dance team. I haven’t done nearly as many styles either, I’ve mostly only done jazz. If you don’t mind me asking, what injuries do you have? You don’t have to answer in detail or anything like that. You don’t have to answer at all if you don’t want to. I haven’t been doing it nearly as long as you, but I also love it a lot. You’re super nice to talk to, also. 😄
This entire post is really over-explained, I apologize.
Hello, again 🙂 First off all, you’re also super nice to talk too. I talk to people here and there, but not that much so thank you for the compliment and conversation. I think I’m over sharing a bit, but once I get started about dance, I can’t stop 🤪
I did dance team my freshmen year, but there was a lot of drama on my team, one of the juniors, who would become a senior (in charge of the team) didn’t like me at all, and I was having a hard time in my life, so I only did it for one year. Dance team is a really good place to get started tho really, if you do think you want to do more in the future.
I’m sure this probably isn’t what you meant, but don’t let mine or anybody else’s # of years or styles intimidate you. Does learning a lot of styles and doing it for a while help you to improve certain aspects of your dancing? Yes. But none of it determines what kind of dancer you are. It’s all about your confidence in yourself and what you feel you need and want for your own dancing. How driven and passionate you are. I just didn’t want you to feel insecure or anything 😅
Lastly, I don’t mind talking about my injuries, it’s just that they’re kinda intense and I sound like a crumpled piece of paper. Bare with me here 😅 Basically, they’re mostly from my body overcompensating for another injury and that made everything worse. I also wasn’t really taking care of myself like I should’ve been so that’s part of the problem as well.
First, sophomore year, I developed shin splints and I got a stress fracture in my left foot ☹️
My junior year was kinda weird because of the lockdown, but before it happened, I got tendinitis (severe inflammation) in my Achilles’ tendons (behind the ankles) and my quadriceps tendons (right above the knees) 😔
My last major issue is kinda tricky bc it was kind of a pre-existing injury before I even started dance. My hips were both dislocated when I was born and they were put in place through a clinical trial so I didn’t have to get invasive surgery as an infant bc there was a chance I wouldn’t have been able to walk at all. It worked 😀 but I have permanent hip dysplasia (hips not set properly in their sockets) 😩 They’ve always have kinda been an issue but like I said it’s tricky. Hip dysplasia causes a lot of other issues on it’s own and I was dancing very intensely on top of that, so….
I also have exercise-induced asthma 😃 it happens in elite athletes, not sure why. I don’t have asthma, I’ve never had asthma, but intense exercise causes asthma like symptoms 🤨
Like I said, I sound like a crumpled piece of paper 🤡 😅 my shins, tendons, and hips are inflamed all the time because they’re all injuries that can take a really long time to heal to the point of not being painful. Shin splints never go away they just stop hurting after a while 🤨
I hope I don’t scare you or worry you with these. A lot of people go through dance just fine and are banged up here and there. Nobody will tell you this and some people will argue, but dance is one of the hardest sports on your body. There are a lot of preventive measures to stop injuries and there are a lot of way to take care of them after you do have them. But DO NOT overwork yourself bc it can lead to injury and make them worse. If something feels off and not quite right, there’s probably something wrong. That’s just the way the sport is.
I hope you have fun and I hope that dance brings you much joy in the future. Thank you again for the conversation bc I myself am a dance fanatic 😏
