from what I know, it’s a common-ish opinion to hc Hugo as genderfluid, although I see him more on the pangender side ((AKA the Varigo fandom rising up to challenge Varian’s bisexuality))
I also really like your closeted Hugo opinion, tho. Hugo’s whole thing is that he uses confidence to hide his insecurities, and adding a controlling and manipulative mentor to that is **chef’s kiss** I’d also really like to see the learning curve and maybe him developing beyond any learnt homophobia from Donella
like, him trying to deny himself of his trans-ness and — if he’s born male in your theory — maybe even trying to force himself out of his love for Varian or just trying to survive by going ”ok I need to fulfill my daily all you think about are girls quota because that’s what other men do, rIGHT??” Hugo maybe even trying out more masculine things than what he’s comfortable with and believing that eVeRyOnE struggles with it. or maybe he simply tells himself he’s insane and melodramatic for being so unsettled in first place
him being born a female would also be an interesting headcanon, if I got the right message from the post. all the theories you could whittle out: how would Hugo transition from his deadname to Hugo? would he go straight to ”I’m a trans man” or try out different genders until he finds what’s best for him? would he come out of the closet the second he gets out of Donella’s toxic grip or would he still have some internalised transphobia that makes him perpetually fear the idea of living how he yearns to?

Ok, trans Hugo AND Varian. Varian is very much out as a trans man by the time of vat7k and Hugo is closeted. Hugo was not taught about any of this stuff so donella could keep a tighter control on him and I will die on this hill.
Either way, Hugo finds out Varian is trans and quietly goes "you can do that?" So Varian helps him explore his identity and when Hugo ends up betraying don, he has a moment of asserting his gender and name before going off to find Varian. Please add on, I wanna talk with someone about this

You got to know - I’m no person that ships. At all. Up to 2016 canon ships were my boat (if any) and I didn’t even ship them or draw them, I just thought they were cute together.
You know, until Undertale flipped my whole life.
Started drawing humans, started RPing, started cosplaying and most important, met @unu-nunu-art in her Error Sans cosplay.
She got me into the best ship ever~~~ 💕💕
Ink and Error have so much diversity, it’s always fascinating to RP as them, to draw them, to cosplay them. They’re similar yet different and both have their own set of problems (like Unu and I… we even give ourselves their nicknames for fun since we cosplay as them X”3 ).
I’ve experienced so much love and fun over the ship, no other ship can be better than that for me. Undertale is one of the fandoms I’m going to remember for the rest of my life, that’s for sure.🖤
