Trawling the net as I do, I came across the remarkable story of Yasuke, the only known African to hold the title of 'Samurai' under the service of feudal warlord Oda Nobunaga. There's a great article about him on Wikipedia but also check out a website called 'AfricaPublic' which is a great source of information on him.
