I like that whereas people on Tumblr or Twitter still argue about the new Assassin's Creed Shadows and especially Yasuke, the editing community on TikTok just accepted their fate, are happy that they have new content and just started editing Yasuke and Naoe.
Things that support Yasuke being a samurai..
Was given a stipend (like other samurai)
Was getting paid by Nobunaga (apparently his nephew also gave Yasuke 10 kanmon, which was more than annual income of some other samurai)
Was given house/land.
Was given a sword of his own.
Mobilized for Takeda campaign of 1582.
Remained there even after Nobunaga dismissed all his "ordinary soldiers".
Literally all samurai meant at the time was being given a sword and pay by a lord to fight for them!
Things that support him not being a samurai
He didn't have a last name. (...Except not all samurai had last names and we have so few remaining mentions of Yasuke, we literally don't know his real name)
Trawling the net as I do, I came across the remarkable story of Yasuke, the only known African to hold the title of 'Samurai' under the service of feudal warlord Oda Nobunaga. There's a great article about him on Wikipedia but also check out a website called 'AfricaPublic' which is a great source of information on him. I’m unable to draw currently but I watched the new trailer and great Googly Moogly these character designs are gorgeous + I really hope they lean especially into the found family and strong friendship dynamic + have that be central to the telling of the game’s story (like w aya and bayek or Jacob and evie)
