K-pop and the Feminine Gaze

This is something that I just realized, but is far from a new thought. K-pop is the epitome of the female gaze. I’m not saying men can’t like K-pop, they can and absolutely should; absolute bangers all around. I’m just saying that K-pop is pretty obviously geared towards women and what they want. Girl groups have pretty girls being sassy and strong and also delicate and cute. It’s showing a full range of womanhood in pretty colors with fun dancing. It mashes tomboy and girly girl with all the shades in between. It’s almost never designed to belittle or oversexualize the woman. K-pop idols encourage us to dance along and show off ourselves, without the pressure to be the best dancer; we can develop our own style and personality through music. There’s always a few moment of a female idol getting hate for what she wears and definitely a bit of colorism and fat phobia that goes in, but no fandom is perfect and it needs to be addressed. But regardless, girl groups are a true celebration of womanhood.

You may ask, what about K-pop boy bands? They’re men, how can they cater to women? Well, I think being men makes it easier to cater to women. I’m speaking in terms of an American here, but the way male K-pop idols appeal to women is simplistic; they seem to actually care. They’re a breath of fresh air, women aren’t the ones being put on display for men. We see men be themselves without most of the toxic masculinity in the way. The male K-pop idols don’t oversexualize us or make weird comments. We just get to watch a bunch of guys look pretty while dancing and singing. We are again encouraged to be ourselves by watching men be themselves. We see these people express curiosity and see them cross gender barriers and the aren’t just accepted despite it, they’re accepted because of it.

This reason, I believe, is one of the main reason why K-pop is stigmatized and considered cringe outside of Korea. (The biggest one being racism, obviously) K-pop is seen as something girly, and to be outgrown because it is a fandom mainly populated by young women (and queer ppl). It’s seen as childish and weird because they don’t want women raising their standards of themself or men. They don’t want women to gain independence or a personality besides being an object for them to enjoy, and if women like K-pop, they gain the power of knowing they can be valued as fans and respected as performers both online and in everyday life. They realize men don’t have to only see them as objects, that they can be seen as valuable for their thought and opinions. They realize that men adorn always have to suffer from toxic masculinity. Anyway, I’m going to go learn the choreography to Chrome Arts.
