Beyond [Part 1/10]

Hello,

this is my first fan fiction written in english, so i am sorry for mistakes.

This is a self-insert Maze Runner fan fiction, and is also Newt x Reader.

The previous chapter is more or less a Prolog.

“So Y/N, your little friend alright? Saw you guys being all girly and shit.”

“Yeah, Lizzy is fine. She is just a little bit overprotective.”

“So you didn´t tell her how close it really was?” The elder guy with fire red hair chuckled.

“Oh shut up! As if you are always so honest with your friends at the experimental department, Jake.”

Instead of an answer the elder boy only grunted. Your talk with Lizzy laid some days back, but you never told her, that you guys just barely made it out the last time. Those cranks were scary but you couldn´t leave Wicked. That was just not an option, even if you knew how fucked up the world was, but you didn´t want to creep Lizzy out of her mind by telling her what you experienced every day. She would only worry more than she already did.

You and Jake just finished checking the equipment for your next mission. So now you could spent some time with your friend. Lizzy worked at the laboratory. Something about developing half organic, half metal weapons to fight against the cranks. In the future those weapons would replace you and the other defense members in order to protect the city and the citizens. That was also a reason why Lizzy worked so hard. She wanted you to leave the active fighters. You couldn´t find her at her normal work space. It took you a while but you found her at one of your hiding places. One you hadn´t used since her brother went into the Maze.

“Hey Lizzy, what´s wrong?” You creeped closer to your friend. You could hear her sniffing as if she were crying.

“He… he…“ But your friend couldn´t say anything more before another whine left her.

“Hey shhh, everything is fine Liz. I am here, I will protect you ok? Now breathe. I can´t help you if I don´t know what´s going on.”

She did what you told her. Lizzy breathed slowly in and out. When she tried to talk again her big brown eyes were teary from all the crying.

“He is going to kill himself.”

Your body froze. Kill himself? Who? And when? That didn´t make sense! Why would she be so sad instead of doing something? Oh no…

“Y- You don´t mean him, him? Who told you this?!”

“A… a friend. I… I needed to know. They never said anything specific. I just needed to know. … He will try to kill himself. The cameras recorded him talking to himself about it. He made a plan! He will do it the next time they send someone up, when everybody is distracted! ”

She was nearly screaming at the end. You were shocked. What should you do? Your friend was at the brink of a panic attack. And all because of this stupid Brit! Shit! You needed to do something! But… what could you do? You hadn´t many options. All you could do was try and calm her down but that wouldn´t work. You had known Lizzy long enough to realise it wasn´t worth trying. Your mind went into overdrive. Before you could come to a solution the blonde Brit grasped your hands with a force you never knew she had. Her eyes seemed to pierce into your soul.

“You need to get him out! You need to look out for him! Please I am begging you! Help him!”

It took you a moment to realize what she was asking you. She wanted you to run and ruin one of the few experiments that might produce a cure for the flare.

“Lizzy I… I can´t…”

“Please! Y/N I´m begging you…!”

You stopped her right there. It wasn´t that you didn´t want to go and save her brother. You genuinely wanted to help him but…

“Stop! Lizzy stop. Even if I could just walk into the maze, straight to him and I then… I don´t know what. Tell him everything is fine or take him out of there? That what he is doing might help hundreds of people? He wouldn´t know who I am and you know it. They erased their memories! It was necessary in order to build a community and strengthen their ambition. I don´t even know what they else do to him and the others, but Ava would have my head for ruining something so big! Not to mention that there is no way for me to get into the maze.”

“My friend can do it. He can get you in. He is smart! We could arrange wrong delivery papers. Make it look like you were sent to the wrong maze. He will cover for you. They already broke Newt, please don´t let them kill him as well! You are the only one I can turn to. Help me.”

The whole time you were kneeling before Lizzy. But after she said that, you had to sit down. Perhaps she - or her friend - could smuggle you into the maze. Maybe you could save him.
