Thing that really makes me chew nails about the way Dick’s relationship to the Tim vs Damian debacle generally gets framed? Not even the way his favoritism is framed as evenhandedness because he treats them ‘equally’ i.e. scolding them both after any altercation regardless of the content or circumstances thereof, like a principal with a zero tolerance policy.

It’s that if I look back on Dick, when he was a few years older than Tim officially was at that point after Final Crisis when Damian got the bird seat, and got replaced with Jason? (After he had already invented Nightwing for himself, mind, though whether he gave up Robin voluntarily or not went through an inexplicable retcon.)

He would not have handled it nearly so well.

Like. That time right after the Crisis, when he comes home on his birthday on the brink of an emotional meltdown because his girlfriend got married so he dumped her? And Bruce doesn’t have time to listen to his problems right now but smiles and tells him later and happy birthday before rushing off to rescue a kidnapped child with Jason? He hadn’t shaved, and he told Alfred to ‘mind his own damn business?’

Imagine if Kori had been dead, instead. And Wally and Roy also, and Donna had refused to support him, rather than telling him other people were suffering too like Kole just died while he was away, and he couldn’t just take out his feelings on her? And Alfred, too, only Dick didn’t think he was really dead and Bruce told him he was imagining things.

And imagine if instead of just keeping quiet and upbeat and not engaging with him as he did in that scene, Jason had jeered about how Batman was prioritizing him now and he guessed Dick should go get a new family and [gendered insult].

And that’s even without this being the moment where he finds out he’s had Robin pulled without having any new identity in the wings, and with his parents’ deaths over a decade ago instead of this year.

Imagine.

Because I remember 20-ish Dick Grayson. I remember how poorly he dealt with grief and other forms of loss. I remember how comfortable he was lashing out at children for words he didn’t like, when he was upset. Shaking Tim for his presumption. Choking Danny for his insensitivity. Never mind the way he used his own words.

And those were kids with minimal combat training who genuinely meant well and were trying to help! They were just really fucking awkward, emotionally abused kids trying to help.

Dick in Tim’s position would have launched himself straight at Damian’s throat during that scene in the Cave where the identity switch was announced. Uppercut him off his feet, maybe. Unless he went for Bruce instead. Either way, we’d have seen his teeth. He’d have needed dragging back, the way Jason as Robin was always having to drag adults back before they Crossed A Line. In that kind of corner, he’d have attacked.

Not exclaimed about the injustice and waved his hands in the air and walked away.

And yet he has the nerve….
