The thing is The Worst Witch originally came out in 1974 and got two TV shows and a movie. The BBC The Worst Witch came out in 2017 and is the most recent adaption to the franchise but it's also a kind of modernization mixed in with TWW(1998) and the books
I needed some white noise on so I put on The Worst Witch on Netflix and it is such a terrible but intriguing show. It’s quintessentially Harry Potter but a girl at an all girls school. Snape is a lady. Dumbledore is a lady. So is Aberforth but her name is Agatha. I’m dead serious. Female Harry Potter’s name is Mildred Hubble and she does not go to Hogwarts, but Cackles. Unlike Harry Potter, Mildred Hubble is not mildly talented at shit. She really is trash. I mean like, at a certain point I looked up from what I was doing and stared at the show saying, “well if they expelled you this time you deserved it.” How did they make me agree with the Snape character on episode 2? Imagine reading Snape for the first time and going, yeah I get it dude, that kid is constantly fucking up, sometimes on purpose and for the laughs. Mildred Hubble has a nemesis named Ethel Hallow. She is blonde and from a wizarding family. So girl!Draco. Girl!Draco hates Mildred from day one and it’s because Mildred is so clumsy that she ruins literally everything around her. Standing completely still, Mildred’s hat will fly off. It was so annoying. So, you kinda get it, but Ethel went a little hard. To Draco’s credit: Mildred Hubble was usually the direct cause of everything that happened to the school and Ethel was usually right about her. Ethel’s problem is that she’s a hater, not that she wrong. Lastly, Mildred’s best friend squad includes the witch version of Blue Ivy. Her parents are famous performers who are constantly on tour. She’s rich. Powerful. And black! Blue Ivy gave up her chance to stop going to school and be a world famous performer to stay at Cackles, the worst magic school I’ve ever encountered teeming with bumbling witches and elementary drama, and train to be a sports star who drinks a potion and runs fast. The kicker is that she needs a specific speed formula to make her faster that everyone else. She steals it and a white woman finesses her out of it. Blue Ivy won the race, and Beyoncé showed up to say she was proud. Witch!Beyonce is truly stunning and probably way too good an actress for this show. It’s so bad. I watched 4 seasons and would watch more. Omg.
This Weapon Wants | Ch.1 : Funny One
Mature | Gen | Graphic Depictions Of Violence | Ogata Hyakunosuke, Tsurumi Tokushirou, Tsukishima Hajime, Original Female Character(s)
1897. Khabarosvk, a town in the Russian Far East. Three suspiciously spy-shaped Japanese men arrive to set up a barbershop; one of them young, eerily quiet, blank-faced and trigger-happy. He's teenage and unwell in a world he doesn't understand, mentored by a man he shouldn't let into his head, but does anyway. One day, he meets someone who reminds him of his mother — she shouldn't, by all means. She does anyway. 1904. China, Lüshun Port — also known as Port Arthur. Ogata is sent on a scouting mission in a pointless, gruesome, largely forgotten war.
first chapter of a long-form fic that's made with a lot of research and a lot of love. featuring russian dialogue, an ogata who's not quite done cooking, an awful-as-ever tsurumi, and the processing of imperialism, nationalism and war through the eyes of a character who's both far removed and at the center of it. do check it out, and if you like it, please let me know - it would mean the world to me!
This Weapon Wants: Ch. 2 | The Illustirous Dead
Mature | Gen | Ogata Hyakunosuke/Tsurumi Tokushirou (referenced/implied when Ogata's an adult) | Ogata Hyakunosuke | Tsurumi Tokushirou | Tsukishima Hajime | Original Characters
cw: description of dead soldiers in quoted text
Братская могила — a “brothers’ grave” — that’s what they called these ditches, nameless graves cradling nameless soldiers. That much Ogata remembered from way back when. The Russian and Japanese dead hardly looked like brothers, but there was something profoundly equalizing in the sight. Greenish-blue skin, blue and khaki tunics, stiff human absences mixed with rock, roots, clumpy dirt — and each other. Yamato-damashii and russkaia dusha feeding the same little ecosystem of brambles, grass, and joyful earthworms. Even the ways in which they thought themselves special were nothing too unique.
the first chapter in the war timeline is out! i'm sure all the research on the matter is tallying up to a whole new kind of damage in my brain, but while i'm still sound of mind: happy to share this! featuring ogata's charming personality, philosophical grave-digging, and tsurugata divorce
This Weapon Wants: Ch. 3 | Practice / The Bullet Is A Girl
Mature | Gen | Ogata Hyakunosuke/Tsurumi Tokushirou (referenced/implied when Ogata's an adult) | Ogata Hyakunosuke | Tsurumi Tokushirou | Tsukishima Hajime | Original Characters
Foreign skin to his, warm to cold, flush and breathing to whatever he could call himself, the hollow halfway-son of a halfway-love that he was. When Ogata touched something so unlike himself, his first and only urge was to reach in. Reach in, from his side to theirs, grip it with knuckles of ghostly white, and drag it over. But that's not what Tsurumi needed, not right now. Would've been a pain to wash off the leather.
new chapter! ft. ogata in a tree, ogata in tsurumi's barbershop, ogata in russian class, and ogata somewhere he's entirely not supposed to be. also, langauge & history notes that don't fit on the screen again.
this one was a massive amount of work. check it out and tell me what you think, i'll be so grateful!

"I wish I could come," Yuusaku continued as he stepped closer. His face was open and dark with worry. You wish you could come. You'd have to sully your gloves. You couldn't return from this above the rest of us, your merciful majesty, you holier-than-thou, your lovingly sheltered highness, sir. Yuusaku gripped Ogata in a hug. Ogata remembered his granddad hugging him. Smothering forearms, someone's shovel-blade chin in his shoulder, the smell of old tobacco and hair and worn-out cotton, and his own arms squeezed limp at the sides. That's how he'd lived for a good while. Waiting for things to be over.
this chapter sat in my drafts for a while. life got in the way, as it often does. here, we return to the war, meet yuusaku, observe questionable decision-making, and learn a little bit about why ogata's even here.
happy to share this, and as always, i'd also be happy to know your thoughts!
if anyone's wondering, chapter 5 of This Weapon Wants is in the works! it's taking a bit because work and health are getting in the way, as per usual, but it's coming along. expect 19th century photography shenanigans

Tsurumi's affection was simple. Purposeful. It had a point, a direction, it was demanding, but it never demanded to know Ogata — it couldn’t care enough. Securing it felt as easy as pulling the trigger; to pull the trigger was all he had to do, either way. Tsurumi's affection never challenged Ogata into anything he couldn't master with target practice. Kamei, on the other hand, confused him.
new chapter! it took a while, but it's here. as usual, kudos and especially every single comment make my day, if you read this and have anything to say, let me know <3
things are heating up as the story crosses into its latter half. we're back in russia, we're learning about 19th century photography methods, and ogata's throwing things again.

Unload your rifle, take out the bolt, wipe it all down, dry it, oil it, reassemble. A cordial one-on-one, a soothing little ritual, like a smoke break, but satisfying. A cigarette only made Ogata want more cigarettes — which passed the time, if anything, but as a habit, it felt pretty pointless. The sameness was comforting, but he got it from other places. He got it from clean, well-oiled parts clicking into place.
new chapter, and we're back to the war. shots fired, trivial things remembered and forgotten, questionable habits indulged. mind the warning in the notes!

Ogata knew how it was with mothers. Even when she wasn’t there — especially when she wasn’t — everything was about her, every gap, every crack, every little thing. He looked at the altar with that one picture, as if the man who’d arranged it had no other family, and he could sympathise. It was only natural, the need to keep glancing over your shoulder at the absence of mom to see what she thought.
new chapter! where ogata does some burning and a lot of talking.

Undead now, he wasn’t sure if he cared enough to make a break for it. If he ever did, he hoped to find Tsurumi buried. No, he hoped Tsurumi knew he’d made it, failed his suicide mission with great success. He hoped Tsurumi knew that it didn’t take a lot to wash out his taste — some Russian wine, some questionably filtered water. Too bad that death would suit him better than genuine surprise.
new chapter! where ogata's in a hospital — predictably, up to no good.

No, Ogata was no bored barchonok. He was a force. He was lightning in a bottle. His small hands held power so tremendous it still made him dizzy. He was the best thing to happen to Tsurumi, the lieutenant had to realise it. And he did — with everything he'd said, he surely did. And Tsurumi, in a terribly practical way, was the best thing to happen to him. “Thank you, sir.”
the final full-on chapter! it's out. it's here :')
This Weapon Wants: Research Source Masterlist
for anyone interested, i've compiled a masterlist of research sources for my longfic! with commentary on each source, what it's about, and how it contributed. it's linked in the work itself by now, but i thought to mirror it here :)

“Ah, don’t worry about it. I’m here, after all, so don’t you worry.” In his voice, something steel-cold seethed just below the surface, like currents under a sheet of ice. Was it the singing that set him off, or Yuusaku’s showy, obnoxious hospitality — either, both, he didn’t know. “He won’t have you lift a finger now, much less wave that sword. Until you grow up, and… What's the word?” A big word on the tip of his cotton tongue, a righteous one. “Volunteer.”
the epilogue is out, and the fanfic is FINISHED!
"The morning lit his bedroom with tepid lilacs. Wherever light could reach, there were bulging cabinet handles, sallow sheets, flattened carpets; where it couldn’t, there was nothing at all. The pale spots of life, surrounded by pitch-black pits and corners, looked like a poorly printed photograph."

Something about Khabarovsk chapters in This Weapon Wants by @cleveradjacent
"What if Xal'atath is pretending to be Khadgar?" Her ass should've roasted like a vampire in the sun if Anduin was blasting her with enough Light to resurrect a man. That said that would've been the funniest cinematic ever. I can see Anduin's horrified face perfectly. Trilogy over let's all go home.
The fact that I am not there should be a crime
