Backstory: Starting as a member of the Tharn noble family in Cheydinhal, Alessia had everything given to them. As they grew older, they had begun expressing violent tendencies, even going as far as to murder their older brother. As a plague on their family, an ancient curse was placed on them; the Curse of Eternal Damnation. Alessia was later imprisoned and labeled 'Mad', at least until the Emperor had demanded that they be free to aid Cyrodil.

I completely understand that you’d wanna focus on the plot and fleshing that out instead of going into the intricacies of the magic system but rather just integrating the necessary details into your story. But (maybe this is because you’re the writer and I’m a reader and therefore not the one that has to imagine an entire world to build with words) the magic system in Umbra does not seem messy AT ALL. I didn't feel like I was missing anything I wasn’t supposed to be missing the entire time I was binging your existing 14 chapters a few weeks ago because most of the story has been told through the perspective of the oc and she doesn't understand everything either- having been lied to and kept in the dark- soooo I think it’s completely fine that readers don't know everything.
There’s just something about a character in a fantasy story that has the once-in-a-millenia powers or qualities combined with the rediscovery of an ancient or forgotten magical system that just...gets to me. I look forward to experiencing the unfolding of future events alongside oc and I’M BRACING MYSELF FOR THE ANGST THAT’LL COME WITH LEARNING MORE ABOUT TAE! I don’t know if I'm mentally ready yet.

Hi! I don't know if you've answered this already but if you haven't please do! What existing systems of beliefs and myths did you draw from to create the magic system in the world of Umbra? I love the complexities of the world you've created and super grateful that you've shared this piece of your imagination with the world.

most of the inspiration for umbra's world building is based in norse mythology. names like niflheim, vanaheim, helheim all come from norse myths (i think everyone is familiar with the 9 kingdoms myth thanks to thor lmao). most of the magic creatures also derive from norse myths. honestly, jrr tolkien made the blueprint and now it's really hard for anyone that tries to write fantasy to stray away from it!
as for the magic system!! basically i took a little bit of inspiration from the inheritance cycle series (eragon), and mayyybe a little bit from the chronicles of the kane. in both series words have power to make spells, the difference is that in umbra's magic system you can only make spells if you're speaking an ancient language (esp. dragon language). also, not every word can become a spell. there's specifics.
there's many more things i don't remember rn lmao but!!! i tried really hard to "create" my own rules regarding the magic system. the thing is, as i mentioned earlier, it's really hard to stray away from the usual fantasy tropes, so many things are actually pretty generic - mostly bc this is a romance fanfiction and i didn't really dive deep into laws and rules. honestly, i feel that the magic system is quite messy as umbra is right now bc many things were not thaaaat well explained (again - it'd be irrelevant to the story rn). i've been rewriting it for some time and readjusting some things that didn't make a lot of sense in my head. maybe if someday umbra becomes a proper published book things will get clear✔️
if i ever finish that guide about umbra's lore i was talking about i might explain everything better idk!!

Umbra: Age: Unknown Bio: A prototype of Reala created by Wizemen. He's the strongest of the bunch is unknown that he and Reala has the same superhuman strength and he maybe even stronger than Reala. Umbra's almost a success being the strongest and brash. But he's an idiot and he thinks he's the smartest but that's not the case and he works for the nightmare rejects as the muscle of the group.

Oooo good one. Well, she is very guarded, especially with her mind. She feels like if anyone knew what was in her head, they'd look at her as a monster (and a recent villainous role in a play made her wonder if the weeks of being immersed in the role would push her to become like the character). But she goes on the offense when someone talks about it. And her mind is overshadowed by so many things. Here are a few little snippets where this is showed

“Umbra, I know what you fear.” Umbra’s expression darkened. “But listen to my words, for we have little and waning time.” She stood still as a monument, her eyes avoiding his. “You fear what effect this role, this woman, may have upon you.” He knows. Umbra was in shock and she felt a tear on her face from realizing the sheer awfulness this thought seemed to carry. Out on the stage, she heard the lines close to her queue

She grew angry with him, and whipped around to meet his desperate gaze with her cold, dark, blue eyes. The fierceness seen there made Alistair falter. He glanced at his hand gripped around her arm, then quickly released his hold and stepped back. Umbra did not speak, but in response to his plea only drew back the curtain staunchly, and walked out onto the stage, letting her role sink into her, to spite Alistair. But also, to her, to show that he was wrong about what he said was in her mind. She felt the eager eyes of the large crowd upon her, and she relished it.

And yeah this is at the beginning and she makes some mistakes (for a reason). She has much to learn
I wish DE went through with the idea of the umbras being a variant, I want more of the version of the umbral frames and mods, even if it’s just their frames like rhino, volt, mag, Loki, ember, ash and trinity, and a quest for them all might be nice, they could maybe all be confirmed dax while all other warframes are other slave races.
