Voting Is Important - Tumblr Posts
It is true that dissuading people from voting is unreasonable on many levels but it is also true that voting ALONE will not solve our problems. The system itself has its foundations in oppression. That said I agree you should vote and here’s why:
1. Voting is good practice in civic engagement. I helps you learn to do a thing for the sake of the community you live in.
2. Voting helps you start researching your community and how it functions politically. Are there ballot initiatives to fund public services? The police? To strip your human rights? Nothing tells you what your community’s politicians value more than the research you do to vote.
3. Voting in local elections CAN do some good. A block of left leaning voters CAN be the reason a library is funded and a police station is not. It won’t fix the system but it can help slow the bleeding and buy us time to actually fix the system.
4. Voting shows public opinion. Voting can send a strong message to fascists that they will get real pushback on their agenda. It also makes it harder for them to say the people are with them.
5. Better is still better. Hilary Clinton sucks, but if we would have had her we would still have our reproductive freedom, since it was putting a rapist and a Catholic woman on the Supreme Court that lost those rights. Picking the lesser of two evils is nothing to be excited about, but it’s still worth it to protect ourselves to some degree. It’s called “harm reduction” friends, not “harm complete thwarting”.
6. Voting should only be a part of your efforts. It’s one thing you can do. It’s not the ONLY thing you should do. Support a coop. Go to a protest. Give mutual aid money and materials. Make connections in your community. Join a third party. Work, build and collectively imagine a better world… and every 2 years fill out some bubbles on a paper. Doing one doesn’t take away from the other. 🙂
"voting is useless and ineffectual" is one of the most insidious lies I see constantly getting plastered on this site and on twitter. please think critically about what groups of people want young people not to exercise political power and why. please think critically about what groups are trying to pass laws that make it harder to vote and what they have to gain by convincing people that voting does nothing. please think critically about who benefits from convincing overwhelmingly left-leaning young people not show up at polls.
please just fucking think about the things you parrot online and whether the ideas you're repeating are actually logical or sound. the far-right is known infiltrating communities and using psyop tactics and a lot of the big popular "leftists" online sow doomerism on purpose because they do not have your interests at heart.
As someone not in the US I'm also begging you to vote against Trump. We don't want to see the republicans in charge and especially not Trump. Four years of a Horse in the hospital situation was enough.
While I understand you're outraged for Palestine, trust me we are too, don't forget that they are other countries sufferings like Ukraine. And while with the US being an ally of Israel, both sides will keep funding the atrocities in Palestine, at least with the Democrats you won't be helping the atrocities Putin commits in Ukraine, because Trump will do his best to hinder the help for Ukraine. That was what got him impeached the first time around, remember?
And sorry to break it to you but as someone old enough to remember the bombing of Kaboul, the US aren't the Justice League of the world righting all wrongs. No country is as hard as it can be to accept. That doesn't mean you should stop holding your government accountable for their actions or stop expressing your support to Palestine, but don't throw other under the bus while doing so and keep in mind that you have other stuff to worry about that are just as important.
Republicans are trying to take your country back over a century, they want to revert it back to before reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, racial rights, women rights back to before the world wars. Show the same respect to the people that fought for their rights during the Stonewall riot, during the civil right movements, or women rights movements than you're showing to the people trying to survive in Ukraine and Palestine and go vote.
Besides between the Republicans that doesn't even cares when the people in their own country gets gunned down and are all buddy buddy with firearms maker and Democrats, who are pro gun control, which one do you think is going to be easier to convince of the value of human life?
"Biden is funding a literal genocide!"
Yeah - and so will Trump. Like, if you don't vote for Biden, Trump will win, and he will continue to send aid to Israel - in fact, he will likely send MORE aid to Israel. That's the reality of the world we live in.
And, to be honest, any US president will support Israel. Because the USA is Israel's ally. That's how foreign policy works.
So who do you prefer?
Biden, who has helped lgbtq rights, reproductive rights, infrastructure, the environment, lowered medication costs, supported unions, and done MANY good, progressive things,
Or Trump, who we already know is awful. Who we already know will destroy any human rights Biden managed to gain. Who will not help the environment. Who will not help trans people, or immigrants, or women.
Because those are your two choices. And if you think they're the same, you are dangerous to all marginalized people.
