MOSBY'S MARAUDERS Aka WILLIE AND THE YANK (Dir: Michael O'Herlihy, 1967).

MOSBY'S MARAUDERS aka WILLIE AND THE YANK (Dir: Michael O'Herlihy, 1967).

Originally produced for US television, Mosby's Marauders in a fictional historical drama set during the American Civil War.

Young Confederate Willie Prentiss (Kurt Russell) is protected by Union Corporal Henry Jenkins (James MacArthur) after accidentally shooting his commanding officer Lieutenant Mosby (Jack Ging). They strike up an unlikely friendship despite fighting on opposing sides. Jenkins soon develops a romantic interest in Willie's cousin Oralee (Peggy Lipton), further complicating their already compromised friendship and arousing the suspicions of Jenkins superior Sgt Gregg (Nick Adams).

Mosby's Marauders was originally screened in three parts on Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color in January 1967, under its US title Willie and the Yank. Retitled, it was shown in UK cinemas on the second half of a double feature with Monkeys Go Home (Andrew V. McLagan, 1967).

Its appealing cast is headed by 15 year old Kurt Russell, previously seen in Disney's Follow Me, Boys! (Norman Tokar, 1966). Although Disney would later cast him exclusively in light comedy, he acquits himself well here in a dramatic performance. James MacArthur was a Disney regular from a decade earlier. His co-starring role as 'the Yank' was his first for the studio since Swiss Family Robinson (Ken Annakin, 1960). Always underrated as an actor, MacArthur would find greater fame a year later in the role of Danny in TVs Hawaii Five-O (1968-80).

Mosby's Marauders is an unusual Civil War picture, in that it is told from the perspective of the South. Yet this is no Confederate flag waver and is told in a fairly matter of fact manner, sympathetic with the plight of those fighting for both North and South.

Modern audiences, especially children, may be put off by the movie's subject matter and the fairly dry manner in which it is presented. Still, Mosby’s Marauders is a handsome outdoor adventure with none the budgetary restraints one might expect from a TV movie. Not for everyone, perhaps, but a quality product which is well worth a watch.

MIDWAY (Dir: Roland Emmerich, 2019).

MIDWAY (Dir: Roland Emmerich, 2019).

The events of this true life WWII campaign were previously filmed as the similarly titled Midway aka Battle of Midway (Jack Smight, 1976). Not having seen the earlier account, I will not make comparisons between the two movies.

Midway begins with the events surrounding the attack on Pearl Harbor and chronicle the subsequent naval battle of the Pacific. Best known for directing big budget sci-fi blockbusters Stargate (1994) and Independence Day (1996), Roland Emmerich may seem an unlikely choice to helm a serious wartime drama. Midway, however, was pet project for Emmerich, one that he has fought to bring to the screen for many years.

Thankfully he tells the story straight. Certainly the special effects spectacle one expects from Emmerich is here to, as are the breathtaking action sequences. Yet these scenes are broken by the necessary detailing of the campaign. This pacing allows the action to breath and helps the movie be more than just an exercise in visual effects.

A fairly star-studded line-up was assembled for the movie, including Ed Skrein, Patrick Wilson, Luke Evans, Nick Jonas, Woody Harrelson, Dennis Quaid and Mandy Moore. As is often the case with these kind of movies, the actors are somewhat overshadowed by the spectacle. Although in fairness, the quality cast give solid performances throughout.

Midway is a decent movie, although one that, perhaps, brings nothing new to the war movie genre. A sense of the familiar is not necessarily a bad thing in a period movie but it’s underperformance at the box office suggests that old fashioned WWII features are a difficult sell to modern moviegoers, even with the presence of a Jonas Brother! That said, I did enjoy it. It is a worthy story, told in an impressively mounted and entertaining manner. If you want to watch it, it is worth catching it on the big screen where its spectacle can be fully appreciated.

ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (Dir: Lewis Milestone, 1930).

ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (Dir: Lewis Milestone, 1930).

A pre-code WWI drama adapted from German author Erich Maria Remarque's 1928 novel, All Quiet on the Western Front follows a group of students as they enlist in the army, detailing their transformation from idealistic boys to war weary soldiers, depicting the squalid living conditions and futility of the loss of young lives with a stark realism.

Told, unusually, from the perspective of German soldiers. At first the broad American accents are a little jarring and take some getting used to. But remember this is so early in the history of sound cinema that it is a miracle they are talking at all. Little else in the picture strikes a wrong note. Nowhere to be found are the static camera shots often associated with early talkies. With its inventive camera angels, practical special effects and hundreds of extras it presents a visual spectacle that more than holds its own against modern CGI aided blockbusters. The film is full of affecting imagery, from the sight of the rapt students stirred up by an impassioned indoctrination on the glory of serving the "Fatherland", to the poetic final frames of a butterfly on the battleground, fading to shot of a cemetery.

With the possible exception of Lewis Ayres, in the lead role of young soldier Paul, much of the cast is unrecognizable to modern audiences. This arguably lends the film more authority, as no preconceptions of star status are allowed to diminish the powerful performances. Director Milestone elicits sensitive, natural performances from the cast which compliments the brutally beautiful images that he and cinematographer Arthur Edeson have created.

Almost a century after its release All Quiet on the Western Front remains probably the most powerful indictment on the horrors of war ever put to celluloid. It was met with immense critical acclaim, receiving the Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director in what was only the third year the ceremony was held. The movie is indisputably a landmark in cinema history and more than lives up to 90 years of hype. In short, it is a masterpiece.

THE BUCCANEER (Dir: Anthony Quinn, 1958).

THE BUCCANEER (Dir: Anthony Quinn, 1958).

Historical accuracy goes out the window in this less than epic war movie, masquerading as a pirate adventure; a fictionalised account of the real life events of the War of 1812 between the US and the British.

Famed privateer Jean Lafitte (Yul Brynner) is offloading his ill gotten gains to the good people of Louisiana, much to the chagrin of Governor William Claiborne (E G Marshall), while also romancing the governor's daughter Annette (Inger Stevens). The governor conspires with General Andrew Jackson (Charlton Heston) to put an end to Lafitte's pirating ways but eventually seek his assistance at the Battle of New Orleans.

ATTACK ON THE IRON COAST (Dir: Paul Wendkos, 1968).

ATTACK ON THE IRON COAST (Dir: Paul Wendkos, 1968).

Following the success of The Great Escape (John Sturges, 1963), producer Walter Mirisch would attempt to repeat its success with other WWII themed movies including 633 Squadron (Walter E Gruman, 1963), Submarine X-1 (William Graham, 1968) and this cheap and cheerful effort.

Inspired by the real life Operation Chariot, a raid on the German occupied French port St Nazire, Attack on the Iron Coast details an mission to destroy a Nazi stronghold, lead by hardheaded Canadian army Major Jamie Wilson (Lloyd Bridges) and dissonant British navy Captain Franklin (Andrew Keir).
