Toriel Week Day 1: War
I like to think that Tori was a sort of head medic/frontline nurse during The War!! Her healing powers and excellent control over her magic just like up too well with that for me haha. Here are some Wartime Toriel head cannons, cause my brain isn’t wanting to formulate this into actual naritive paragraphs right now lol:
• She has JUST married Asgore when the War started, and was only newly a princess (Asgore’s parents were still the reigning king and queen.) So she was quite young. Only in her early 20s.
• She’d always been good at healing magic. Her mothers taught her at a very young age how to, and had her practice it as often as she could. It just made sense to start an infermery with other monsters who were talented in those spells.
• Originally, niether her nor Asgore were allowed to help with the War efforts. The rest of the Royal family had deemed it too risky to be on the battle field and stuck to a much more passive, strategical sort of roll. Toriel, who was born as one of the people her in-laws scorned, had none of it. There was no time to argue or press, so the pair just rebelled and went out to help thier people hands on. This set the mood for the rest of thier time ruling together.
• The actual War itself only lasted for a couple of days, a week at most. However, conflicts leading up to it had been going on for centuries, and steadily getting worse. The villiage Toriel lived in before marrying Asgore was actually raided a couple of times.
• Toriel still has scars on her shoulders and arms from the first attacks AND her time as a medic. She’s run out to collect the injured before and it shows.
• Probably one of the worst days of her young life was whenever she was tending to the wounded and Gerson ended up getting rolled in. He was missing an arm, an eye, and was just really fucking banged up to top it all off. She was sure he was going to die.
• She lost her in-laws, one of her mothers, and several close aunts and uncles to the war, be it the raids, the conflict itself, or simply being trapped on the wrong side of the barrier. Not being able to process that grief and immediately going into business mode afterwords is what really set the stage for her coping mechinisms later in life.
• It took years for Toriel to come down from war mode. You can’t just walk away from that kind of trauma easily.
• She still has nightmares and sleepwalking episodes. Once she awoke in her living room, desperately trying to give CPR to a couch cushion. It was a bad night.

while most of us in Europe were watching Ukraine duo TVORCHI perform at Eurovision yesterday, their hometown was getting attacked by missiles
One thing i loved about this All Quiet On The Western Front adaptation is how they focus on food.
There's a scene from the book that i will never forget about how the rats crawled on their faces while they slept to get to the bread stored under their pillows. That imagery has been with me since i read it back in high school. And i know starvation and food rationing is a common aspect to focus on in war movies, but i really love how this film handled it.
Whenever we see soldiers eating in this film, they are huddled together, eating quickly, messily. They are grateful for the smallest morsel. They steal food. They risk their lives for food.
Whenever we see the wealthy, the politicians, the older men who are not in the trenches eating, there is tons of space between them. They eat elegant dishes. They are in no rush. They sit alone in the fancy dining car of the train with all their courses laid out. They sit the entire length of a great dining table apart while chatting casually about their upbringings. They complain about their perfectly good croissants not being freshly made that day. This meal is not life or death for them. It's not snatching a hurried bite under the worst conditions imaginable, with another blood-stained, mud-covered soldier by their side; it's a leisure activity with no sense of community. No impending doom.

These are war crimes. Holding someone accountable for committing war crimes is not discrimination, it's a responsibility
You should be furious that people trying to escape genocide in Gaza, Sudan, Congo all need raise an absurd amount of money just to survive
You should be furious at how these people went through atrocity after atrocity and still need raise tens of thousands of dollars to get away
You should be furious at this insidious thing that completely encapsulates how capitalism feeds off of blood
