Water Wife - Tumblr Posts
First thing in tbe morning and is BEAUTIFUL, thanks so much for explaining Mads!!! Also I enjoy long rambles and yours are so coherent and well structured, now THIS IS MY NEW HEADCANON AS WELL!!!.
Thank you so much for opening my eyes! Is so cute and I'm living for the shitty couple of Ithaca, and the nymph stuff adds it so much better!!!.
I also have crooked nose like she! Hahahaha, but i like mine :D
Also hope for your recovery as well or at least a betterment of your conditions, strenght! 🩵
Hi! I want to know more about the Water wife, I´ve a really small understanding of this take on Penelope and i wANT TO KNOW MORE!!!!
Thanks for being so kind! 💙
I WILL HAPPILY
(understand that these are just headcanons/my ideas and I'm very silly)
Go through the tag of #my headcanons if you want more stuff though honestly, as...I write a LOT about her.
Not gonna lie, this is a LOT of rambling. Also certain things I won't say as I DO plan to someday write Odypen's courting and I want the readers to "fall in love" with her ALONGSIDE Odysseus. We already know him. But the Odyssey kind of keeps a lot of her intentions/sneakiness hidden on purpose because she's just as much of an enigma to Odysseus as the Narrator in a way. (it's one of the things I love so much about her). I hope to write her in a way that "reveals" HER as well.
Honestly I'll try and tag all my stuff with her with Water Wife (maybe without tm because...that was just for the silly and it's sometimes annoying to dig up the emoji thing on computer)
I take a lot of liberties with everything "nonmortal" (demigods, nymphs, etc.) because honestly it's just genuinely fun to write about plus I'm neurodivergent :P also have chronic pain, so I like writing SOME of my gals doing athletics. Mostly just Penelope and Helen being SUPER into it while other women have some activities they like. Ctimene for example, likes running and Anticlea woodcarving (who Odysseus learned it from)
Also silly thing, but one thing I always try to keep in mind is the idea of "A lot of people write women just reacting and not affecting" and I feel like people think Homer and other Ancient Greek Authors do that when...No. They write very dynamic and complex women. Penelope isn't JUST "sobbing" when the suitors are there. If it weren't for her schemes, she'd be married already. BUT NO!!! She's so cunning and held them off WITHOUT physical force!!!
"She should've killed them-" YEs! BUT there are also the political implications of that and xenia to consider!!! Literally at the end of the Odyssey, Athena has to calm everybody down!!! She couldn't do that without even more angry people coming at her!!! rtdyfugh ANYWAYS
I also take "likeminded" and sprint with it. For every shitty/wonderful thing Odysseus has done, she's rooting for it or would do something similar. They're as full of love as they are full of hate.
These two are that "evil couple" sometimes. She's sitting in his lap and they just humiliated someone publically and laugh at them and then they start nuzzling noses, giggling.
She's prideful in many ways as well and she's not against throwing someone under the bus if she needs to and WILL blackmail. You're afraid of snakes and she doesn't like you? "Oh my gosh! What do you think of my new snake necklace?"
She's pretty reckless often in her youth (Her and Odysseus both got that Adhd swag). For example, in my one fic's first chapter, it mentions how she ate a catfish that is making her sick. She rushed in and wasn't even thinking about "...Hey, isn't this one kind of weird?" She was pretending she was fine at first when she clearly wasn't as she doesn't like showing "weakness" (plus adrenaline). Also as she just gave birth like, 8-9 months before, she's in a weird funk of feeling strange about how her body has changed a bit despite recovering very well (water helps!). She's soooo happy she took the "beast" down. While sick, she knew she was reckless and mad at herself.
She's actually closest with Helen probably. Her siblings are a bit older than her and as she was born in a creek and quite smaller because of it (Naiads being affected by the waters they were born in) she got teased by some other naiads for quite a while. Helen is also, a little shit, in her own way so these two loved doing silly shit often. (Penelope, Helen, Menelaus, Castor, and Pollux, were this very strange little squad of kiddos who just...did random shit. They each have scars and knicks from their silliness (except Helen and Pollux))
Some of the scales she has on her arms and one shoulder, dry out quicker, from one of the times older naiads got a hold of her and kind of ripped at them :'D "Puddle girl"
It's something she carries with her in a way and when her water breaks with Telemachus, she hides it at first being like "Hey, let's head towards the caves!!!" until Odysseus realizes and he's so frustrated and upset with her has to scoop her up. (her stubbornness and recklessness) He scolds her after everything calms down like two weeks later.
Funny enough, I've had this idea for a LONG time even before I watched the 90's Odyssey. Odysseus just gives that vibe of "I'm not fucking leaving." don't he?
Odysseus: I can't believe you did that. The Canals were closer, Penelope- Penelope: I know but he'd be so much stronger if he were born in the caves and he is. AND I'm fine!!! I'm actually doing very well.
She hates bracelets. She usually ends up breaking them from messing with them too much.
Athena technically spoke with her first before Odysseus but Athena was WATCHING Odysseus for a longer time.
She's really close with her parents because her eldest sister got married quite young and her brothers are in the military. She goes running with dad often (let me have this) and she enjoys swimming (ofc), running, and pankration (Idk why I think it's really neat but I do)
She's got a scar on her temple that is kind of hidden by her hair from when she got washed away once when she was little (the scars she DOES have are because of her own novice attempts at healing, otherwise she doesn't have really any) and she's got a little crook in her nose, something she's self-conscious about as it was one of her first times "setting bone" with water and so it didn't end up perfect. It's not too noticeable but of course, you notice your own flaws more than others. (When she finally allows Odysseus to kiss her face, he immediately places a little kiss on her nose.)
There's...SO many more but yeah. a lot of basics.
@dootznbootz I'm not that much awake but I saw you posted a Water wife post and I had to read ir; I'm not surprise by the quality!! It's so gooodd. I was hooked up since the begining.
I have an idea of my own, What if Ithaca, an island in the Ionian sea, did't used to have rivers but only springs? Then as Odysseus gets with Penelope as a present He builds the Canals around the Palace (the ones before are mostly cloged up) and with a little help he creates a riverbed in a plain prone to flood??? Like Bioenginer Odysseus!!! ♡
That's why the conflict with Ithaca's naiad, he uses their reservoirs for the Canals and river, and because is a new river it's free of divinities and the Ithacans naiads want it for themselves.
So there are two conflicts the reservoirs and the custody of the rivers, at the end Penelope's is queen not only of mortals but also the queen of Ithaca's naiad (or the most powerful of them)
Hope you like the idea!
You mentioned Telemachus having sharp Naiad teeth. Imagine if he used those teeth to take out all the suitors. With Odysseus’ help of course.
Sadly, would probably leave him open and vulnerable to attacks :'D So he probably wouldn't unless really desperate.
Sharp naiad teeth are more for "I can rip through any fish scale and bone and be fine." as an adaptation for water life than for battles between mortals. Odysseus watches so lovingly seeing his Water wife and Water son devour whole fish.
Telemachus is around 37.5% Naiad and he'd probably be using water from the canals to trip suitors. Even then, he can only work with a certain amount of water. Penelope has MUCH more control and she's kind of there as well. Imagining Odysseus seeing a bunch of dudes drowning, only to realize it's not Telemachus, itches my brain. He starts cackling and gets a special bloodlust when he realizes she's "there". It's another reason why he's so hurt when she firsts rejects him as "We were basically flirting during our dinner, you drowned some suitors. You KNOW it's me! WHY?!" but uh...He doesn't know that Athena had to tell Penelope not to drown the "stranger". She was mostly trying to make sure Telemachus stays safe and along with you know, killing the suitors now that she has "permission". There's more to it but yeah lkasjdf sounds nuts but I think it'll work.
Penelope looked him in the eye during that dinner, tears still damp on her cheeks, and says "You say all these things but My Odysseus, who fidgets with his clothing and who bounces his knees in time with my own, would never leave me weeping while he sits. He would throw his arms around me!" "...He would if he could." Then he goes to sleep outside and she's pissed and he's a mess. :D The "Beggar" looks nothing like her husband but he moves and talks just like her love, his voice unsteady as he praises her. What the fuck is going on? Basically she knows it's him but also is like "Why would he keep himself from me?" Like how Odysseus tells HER during the treebed scene
And Athena is editing her fanfiction document for these two as "You little fucks weren't supposed to be doing this! I kept your tears from falling, Odysseus, why do you have to be such a sap?! Shit! Back to the storyboard."
Anyways!!! :D
Naiads usually don't bite people unless they feel they have no other option. Odysseus is an exception as he does have ONE "special bite" from his special wife because he's a little freak who wanted it rdtfygufgh. Penelope bit Palamedes on his forearm as he held her back as he took Telemachus from Anticlea and Penelope rushed after him. Odysseus is haunted by the image of both his wife and son sobbing while her teeth are stained with blood. He gets sick pleasure seeing that scar on Palamedes' arm before he gets him killed.
And as a whole, there are actually a couple "rules" Naiad born soldiers have to follow that are very important within war.
With battle, even if you ARE naiad born, you have to ask the river god "Hey, this is getting really bad. Can we work together for this?" As River gods are usually like "I am here for your consumption, bathing, and healing. You will not use my water for violence." (Why Achilles gets his ass kicked and why Naiad born soldiers don't just "drown people")
If someone/something is attacking your river or YOU, like an animal wreaking havoc (like the big catfish! :D ) or a person trying to kill a single naiadborn, then self defense is fine. Daphne got turned into a tree because Apollo outranks nymphs and the river gods. River gods don't fuck with Olympians but he still wanted to protect her.
Though once you have your own water source (canals, vase full, etc.) you're technically free to do whatever you want with it. (Penelope loves this loophole 😈 The Palace waters are hers. and Telemachus' too but you know.)
With the war aspect, however, there are so many wounds that are like "wow, you probably have an extreme infection or should've killed you eventually". BUT it's convenient when you have Naiad born soldiers that can "heal you up" (Penelope's brothers are part of Menelaus' army btw!!! :D )
It's kind of why it's become a "If a man is still alive when they're picked up and rescued, that doesn't mean shit. A naiad born person will fix it before they even bleed out. If they don't die instantly, they just come back."
Same with fighting among nymphs btw.
Even if you're naiad born, you can't just act like how you do at home with a foreign river. Feel free to jump and swim and wet your scales but stay out of their business. If the naiads of Athens decided to punish people by poisoning the waters, you, as a Spartan naiadborn, do not meddle! Can't start purifying it to give to the citizens. Maybe for your OWN people who came with you on the foreign expedition if you ask but don't meddle with foreign river problems. Each culture is different.
Took a while for Penelope to adjust and improve relations with Ithaca naiads because of this. And when Tyndareus and Icarius were exiled, it was a culture shock for them as they're 50% naiad. Even with non-naiadborn, it's a shock. Menelaus and Agamemnon were in Sparta during their own exile had to adjust too, though Menelaus definitely fit right in. (I'm so excited to write about 18-20 year old Agamemnon's first interaction with 9 year old Penelope. It's a misunderstanding at first but it's wholesome. Spoiler: Have you ever been in a place and then a random little kid starts talking to you and then they give you a leaf or something? YEAH >:D It's that but sillier. It's cute.)
Honestly, I'm playing around a lot with the whole "Sparta being very military-focused" thing as it's really kind of fun to think of people having children with naiads/naiadborn as somewhat of a strategy. If you can't have demigods, nymph born children are still better than fully mortal ones. It's why there ARE so many naiad born and why interactions are basically informal in Sparta in my fics compared to other places. Like Ithaca.
I got really offtrack but in conclusion: There are special rules and customs of each freshwater source. And how battles are affected by it. Telemachus doesn't bite any of the suitors but probably uses water to help him and to heal his and Eumeaus' wounds.
@dootznbootz wife is an absolute banger! It' so cool!!!!
Babe, listen
Your fic isn’t a flop, it’s a cult classic. Only the coolest freaks like it, don’t worry about it, it’s great.
@jarondont Thanks for making me cry, again, and now with my one of my favourites headcanons T T.
Can all you stop being so taleneted and let me a day without crying please! 💙
Aftermath (odypen fanfic)
TW: mentioned SA and (according to my friend) slightly (and I mean SLIGHTLY) suggestive
[I was pretty proud of this one so I wanted to share :D]

The palace halls were deserted this time of night. The two lovers had taken an evening stroll — more like midnight stroll — and were still drenched from the creek. It wasn’t her fault, she insisted — Odysseus started it. Had he never smugly commented about his “godlike looks,” Penelope might have not used her naiad powers and they both would probably still be dry. But no.
That lovable little bighead, she thought to herself, smiling.
“What is it?” he asked from beside her. She snapped out of her thoughts and glanced at him — then, seeing his cocky grin, looked back down. Her cheeks felt hot.
“Oh, nothing. Just thinking about how embarrassed you looked after the creek incident.”
“Did not!”
“Did too.”
“Did not!”
“Quit arguing like a child,” she chuckled.
He pretended to pout, softening his expression like a little pup as he always did to persuade her.
“Don’t make that face at me.”
His grin returned, wider this time. “Why not? Too gorgeous for you?”
She stopped walking and playfully shoved his shoulder into the nearest pillar. Before she could say anything else, he grabbed her arm and pulled her close. For a second, they stayed there, looking into each other’s eyes, barely able to breathe.
She eyed his lips. He eyed hers. She inched her face closer, almost closing the gap between them —
“Wait.”
Confused, she pulled back. “What?”
Odysseus was trembling. His breathing was shallow and uneven, his skin pale. “I just … I can’t.”
“Why not?” Penelope’s brows furrowed. “Odysseus, what’s wrong?”
He didn’t respond. His chest was heaving, his eyes flicking wildly from one spot to another — looking at everything but her. And he wouldn’t stop shaking.
“Odysseus. Ody, look at me.”
He did, but his eyes were wild.
“You can tell me if something’s bothering you. Did I do something? Say something?”
“No — no, I …” He trailed off, shaking his head.
“It’s okay, Ody. You can tell me.”
“Ca — ” his breath hitched. “Calypso,” he breathed, barely audible.
“What — ” Suddenly, Penelope understood. She’d heard that word before. Calypso wasn’t a what.
She was a who.
“Another woman?” Penelope took a step back. “Is that what this is about?”
No response. Just more ragged breathing.
“Answer me, Odysseus,” she spat angrily. “Who is this woman you slept with? Why did you choose her over me?”
His eyes widened more, suddenly flicking up to meet hers. “No! No, it’s not like that. She — ”
“What’s going on, Odysseus? What else haven’t you told me? What else are you hiding?”
“Penelope, listen — ” He paused, choking a little as tears formed in his eyes. “I tried to stop her but she — ” Suddenly, he dissolved in tears. “I’m so sorry.”
Oh.
Penelope’s heart dropped. He didn’t choose Calypso over her — no, the reality was much worse.
She stepped closer again. “Ody, it’s okay — ”
“No. No, it’s not. I’m sorry.”
Reaching out to touch his face, she repeated, “It’s okay — ”
But he jumped away from her hand like it was the point of a sword.
“Don’t touch me.”
She froze, realizing why he said that. “I’m sorry, Ody — ”
His expression softened. “No. I’m sorry. I — ” his voice caught in his throat as his eyes widened again.
“I have to go,” he said, slowly backing away.
“Odysseus — ”
“I’m so sorry.”
And he turned and sprinted away.
•••
“Odysseus? Ody, where are you? Odysseus!”
Penelope ran through the halls, almost tripping and cursing at her dress for being so long. She called her husband’s name over and over again, worry blossoming in her heart like a poisonous flower.
She checked the gardens. Nothing.
She checked the main hall. Nobody in sight.
She checked the courtyard. Completely empty.
Where was he?
Realization struck her — there was only one place left.
Panting, she knocked on the bedroom door. “Ody? Ody, it’s me, are you in there?”
No response. She was about to knock again but then —
Sniffle.
Her heart felt like it had been ripped into pieces. Just that one sound made her knees feel week. Odysseus was crying — because of her. Because she decided to do the one thing that made him uncomfortable — touch him.
Although, she thought, Odysseus had never acted like this before. If anything, they both loved curling up on that wedding bed of theirs and losing themselves in love. It made them feel … intertwined. Not just their limbs. But their hearts. Their souls. Like two olive bushes — one tame, one wild — growing from the same stem with their branches wound together so tightly that nothing, not even the wind or rain, could pass through.
Now, it felt as if someone was hacking at the wild branch with an axe, trying to cut him off from his stem and pry him away against his will. That someone was Calypso.
Or maybe — Penelope dreadfully thought — it was herself.
Either way, she could not let him feel like that any longer. She opened the door, stepping inside.
“Ody?”
Another sniffle.
She gently closed the door, then followed the sound to behind the bed. Curled up in a corner was the king of Ithaca — shaking, sobbing, choking on his breath with his head against the wall and knees tucked into his chest.
“Odysseus.”
A pained groan escaped his throat as he winced. His eyes were shut tight, his skin dripping with sweat and tears.
Her gut twisted. What was happening to him? “Odysseus. Ody, wake up. Please.”
“Enough, goddess,” he croaked quietly. “Please.”
“What — Odysseus, it’s me —”
“No!” His body twitched as if someone had sent a bolt of lightning through him. His brows furrowed in pain. “You’ve — you’ve hurt me enough. No more — no more games. Please, I beg of you.”
“Odysseus! Please! Wake up!” she cried, crouching down and desperately taking his face in her hands. She could feel tears forming in her eyes, clouding her vision. What must he have gone through to get this upset?
His eyes still squeezed shut, he jumped away from her touch. “Get away from me!” he yelled. “Please — leave me alone. Let me — let me have one peaceful night. One. Please —”
“ODYSSEUS, IT’S ME! It’s Penelope! You’re home, remember? You’re safe. Please, come back to me.” She choked, the tears flowing freely down her face now.
His eyes flew open as he jolted awake. At the sight of her, his breath hitched. “Penelope,” he whispered. “It’s you.”
She nodded, smiling through her tears. “Yes, my love. It’s me. You’re home.”
For a second, he was silent, taking in everything about her — her face, her electric blue eyes, now overflowing with tears. She held his gaze, watching him realize that this was Penelope — his loving wife. She’d never hurt him. Never.
Suddenly, he threw his arms around her, dissolving in tears again. She hugged him back, her fingers combing his sweat-soaked hair as sobs racked his body. She fought the urge to cry with him, knowing that she had to be strong for the both of them if she wanted to help him.
“It’s okay,” she whispered into his ear over and over again until he had somewhat calmed down. “You’re okay.”
He waited until the tears stopped flowing, then let go and met her gaze again. “I’m sorry.”
“No.”
“I’m sorry, Penelope.”
“No, I’m sorry. I made you uncomfortable. I won’t touch you anymore —”
“No!” he exclaimed. “No, please do.” His eyes glinted with longing. “Twenty years I have been starved of your touch. I can’t hold back any longer. I just — it’ll take some time for — for me to get used to it.”
“Take your time, my love. I’ll be right here by your side.”
He nodded, biting his lip as his eyes moistened again. Burying his face into her shoulder, he sat with her in silence.
After a moment, Penelope spoke. “If you ever want to talk about it —”
He shuddered.
“You don’t have to,” she stammered. “Talk about it, I mean. I know it’s hard. I know you’re hurt. But if you do —”
“No, I do. Just — give me a second.”
“Take your time,” she repeated.
A few seconds passed as he steadied his emotions. Separating himself from the embrace, he took a deep breath. He couldn’t meet her eyes.
“It wasn’t just Calypso. Before that … Circe.”
Oh, gods. Penelope felt dizzy.
“But at least I got something out of that. Hermes told me that for her to release my men, I — I had to allow myself into her bed. So I did, reluctantly.” His voice cracked. “It worked. She released my men and sent us on our way to the Underworld. I thought that would be the last of it.”
Penelope started to take his hand in hers, then stopped herself. But Odysseus looked down, then took her hand instead. She smiled at him comfortingly.
“Calypso was a different story.” He swallowed. “After my ship was struck down by Zeus, I washed up on an island. She greeted me, appearing kind at first. She gave me shelter, food, clothing, and company. One day, I told her that I must be on my way. But she —” He hesitated. “She had different plans. ‘I gave you everything I could. It’s time you repay me.’ I agreed. ‘Anything, goddess.’” He paused. “I wish I had known what she had meant.” His voice cracked again as he finally met Penelope’s eyes. “I’m so sorry, my love.”
She shook her head.
“I'm just a man, Penelope. A mortal. I was no match against this goddess. I’m so sorry. Every night, no matter how hard I resisted, she’d — she'd force me into her bed; every night after … her, I’d lie awake thinking of you — of how I betrayed you, even when you were waiting for me for all these years —” He choked, letting out another sob.
She wrapped her arms around him again as he whispered, “I’m sorry.”
“No, don’t be.”
“I’m so sorry.”
“Don’t, Ody.”
Silence fell again between the two as he composed himself. Penelope spoke again — “This happened … every night?” she whispered.
He slowly nodded into her shoulder.
“For how long?”
No response.
“Ody —”
“Eight years.”
Gods.
Now tears fell from her eyes too as his fingers dug into her back, desperately grasping for her affection. The realization that this — being forced to betray his beloved; not the monsters, the gods, or anything else he faced — was the worst he could have ever suffered.
For eight years. Penelope felt sick.
“I’m so sorry,” he kept saying, but she only shook her head.
Her heart shattered. None of this was his fault; why was he apologizing? And this was nothing like the Odysseus she knew. Odysseus was a hero — strong, brave, and cunning. No, this was … broken. A man who had been through far more than he let on; far more than he deserved.
Even heroes need to be consoled sometimes, she figured.
They sat like that for a while, taking comfort in each other. When they finally parted, they both felt different — healed.
All that was in the past now. They had each other now, as they always would. They were safe. They were home.
They were together. And that’s what mattered.
“Penelope?” Odysseus asked.
“Hm?”
“Thank you.”
She only smiled.
That night, the two of them fell asleep in each other’s arms — the two olive bushes, intertwined again at last.
Never to be separated again.
Why!!!!!!????
@dootznbootz nOW YOU´RE NOT GETTING NAIAD PENELOPE!
I was in the middle of skechting! I´m too heartbroken to draw, thank you so much! T T
Btw, Odysseus has 4 little crescent moon-shaped scars on each tricep from him digging his nails into his arms when he'd cry on the shores of Ogygia :D
Don´t worry it would have been worse if you went the Odysseus the bioenginner route™, that would have been craizier, also I don´t think there´s a geological map of Ithaca, (we don´t have a clue where it is)
btw it's fantasy, you really don't need to worry about your world map making "sense" geologically or whatever. make that river flow backwards from the sea into the mountain.
She would be the one gutting the fish and then he putting in a fine plate, saying she was the one plating and he the one gutting the fishes!
Like yes I love weird Penelope ans love-sick Odysseus, it paints a different funnier picture of the two, >:D
Hi! Hope you're doing good! >:D
Odysseus: i love Penelope to the moon and back Odysseus: she's the preetiest, more refined, perfect person in this World, where's my love I'm dieing to ask out? *Penelope under the water hearing everything, trying to go to the surface as the naiad that she is* What she looks like:
What Odysseus sees:
Water wife™️ has me in chocked, I'm in love with this headcanon and is so so cute, and AHHHHHHHH.
Sorry I get carried away....
Dude, that's literally how it is 😂
Odysseus is watching her gut a fish and thinking "Gods, I wish that were me...🥴" and everybody is kind of staring at him like he's insane.
She'll be munching on a raw fish, bones and all, some scales and blood across her cheeks and face and he's sitting there like this 🥰
He loves his weird and goofy Water Wife 😌
Love that you like it!
Also I was the mysterious one that send you that today you'll had a surprise
And yes I struggle to draw women as I don't like how they end up usually, (strange angles, not soft as I want, or the eyes, The eyes is what kills me!.
Hi Mads!
Here I have the first encounter of Odysseus and Penelope (Water wife™️) (sorry for the quality as thi is my first time drawing woman and NOT giving up halfway through)
Penelope is coming to the garden of the palace, with today's "hunt", (the splashes in her face are the fish blood) having no clue that Odysseus is coming to see her, (ask her hand).
All Odysseus's servants are lamenting and saying sorry to Ody thinking that she is the most feral Princess they had seen, unknown to them Odysseus has fall over heels for her. (He doesn't want a pretty face, he wants a decided wife).
So he asks her while she is holding the stinky dead fish, hahahaha.
Eniwei hope you liked this!
Penelope the huntress and lovesick Odysseus, (they only have a year of difference, he 20, she 19)
(I'm trying my absolute best to draw women, 'cause is not easy to me, they always end up looking strange when I try)
Oh I love it!!!!
And yes, he is staring with hearteyes even when she's gross xD
You did just fine drawing her! She looks lovely!
I was thinking about that Odysseus gray hair headcanon of yours (which i btw love and painfully sob about) and consider:
Penelope seeing him cry in bed, having the realization that when he's lying on his back while crying his tears follow the exact patch of his gray hair. Penelope being out for blood because of that.
Actually, he hates lying on his back after everything... It's something he cannot do anymore. He lies on his side most of the time. Or lies on top of Penelope. (His "favorite bed is made of bone." 😂 As the Water Wife is smaller so when he rests his head on her chest, he's basically right on her sternum. She's fairly flat. She gets SOME squish as she gets older and after pregnancy ofc 😌)
Having a weight on top of him is very upsetting. He usually flips them over or moves. He can no longer be the little spoon either. Penelope cannot lie on his chest. It's just something that has...changed :')
One thing she notices, is that he has 4 little cresent moon shaped scars on his triceps. (some faded ones on his palms too). Then she sees him crossing his arms and realizes they're from him digging his fingernails into himself. Something he used to do while crying on the beaches. The ones on his palms are from the times he was on his back in the cave.
Something that will eventually kind of come into play, is that for Helen, Paris and Deiphobus are dead. She can always be reassured they won't come to get her. For Odysseus, they're GODDESSES...Immortal and can't be 'punished' (nor should they considering they're immortals). Odysseus kind of lives with this fear deep down that they'll somehow come back into his life. They don't. Because THEY DON'T. But he can't shake that fear.
It reassures him that Penelope looks and feels so different. Penelope's smaller, she's fairly cold to the touch, he knows her birthmarks and scars, etc. Calypso was an Oceanaid while Penelope is a Naiad. He hates saltwater for many reasons. Circe felt too hot and felt like burning despite taking Penelope's appearance. Penelope's so cold. etc. Penelope is RIGHT.
Unedited Unfinished snippet of a random wip. Context: He had a bad nightmare.
Shaking with a blank, tear-stained face, Odysseus sat looking away from her. His nails dug into his biceps, the four crescent moon scars proving how often he did this while away. On his palms as well. The tapestry that he tore off the wall (the rod being what broke. Not her own craftsmanship, of course) wrapped around his waist and back. Protecting himself…
Penelope is soooo protective of him though. For example, once while talking with Penelope and Telemachus, Telemachus brings up Calypso (he knows from Menelaus) and asks his dad how he escaped her and how 'dangerous' she was. Was she like Scylla? Odysseus freezes. He doesn't want his son to know of such things. Stuff like that.
Penelope swoops in with distractions and a way for him to sneak away if he needs or to just shove his face under her neck to hide it for a bit. Water Wife is able to get rid of any tears shed so he can look "fine" and keep up appearances.
Odysseus hid his face in her throat, his hands clutching her waist close to him on their shared throne. Another tear spilled out from where it rested upon his lid only to be immediately pulled away. Penelope casually flicked it to the side. Cold hands cupped his face as she pressed a soft kiss to his forehead. "We can sneak out if you need-" "No." He pulled her closer. He swallowed and steadied his breathing. Vision too blurred to look at the dancers anyway. He had a prettier sight beside him. "I already made a scene." Penelope started to say something before stopping and took a deep breath. "Whatever you need, my Joy." "You," he rasped. "Just you."
I wrote this very quickly just to kind of give the vibes I guess. I also have a headcanon that after Odysseus made their bed, he made a throne bench because these two freaks were constantly squirming and were leaning over so much that it got annoying. It also felt very empty for 20 years :') )
People talk about him. About his episodes of PTSD and his lashing out. And she shuts them down. "He's not mad. He's been through all pains. I'd like to see you do well after going through what he's gone through."
She's out for blood on people who question or mock him. Don't talk about her Joy that way. You don't know anything.
Mistress of cheese, bless my table as your caring hands nurtured the grass consumed by your servants, let the cream and milk be as white as pearls in the sea, let me oh your grace rejoice in your gift.
I'm stealing the idea of an ithacan naiad or naiad-born, we're a team in this, I fangirl Ody you Penelope, Titi fangirls Telemachus, cool?
