the new "Simon Snow" book by Rainbow Rowell
... I'm on page 172 which means: It's time for my halfway-through book review!

• Simon!! my poor boy is depressed and self-deprecating! not going to your therapist doesn't help honey! At least America has given him some fresh wind under his wings (ha) but I'm afraid he's just falling back into his child-soldiers days since fighting is all he's ever really known... and don't be dumb, Baz still loves you!!!
• Baz, my poor fancy boy, he does NOT like America (or more: roadtripping through America in a CONVERTIBLE with the SUN out while being a VAMPIRE). I just want him and Simon to really talk. I even forgive him for draining nine kitties.
• Pen, my girl, screw Micah, I still love you! Embrace the weirdness of Americas magic and learn from it, you love that kind of stuff! And I think there's someone who could help you with that stuff...
• Americas magical world in here is so good!!! It's doing everything right that Rowlings worldbuilding did wrong. I love the vibe of it all!!
• The Renfaire was fantastic, first it was funny and heartwarming, then it was tense and a bit heartbreaking (Baz and vampires). Where's Aunt Fiona when you need her?
• I hereby adopt Shepard. He's the best. I love him.
• and now onto my problem child... Agatha, why did you agree to go to this thing? Why couldn't you have just gone to Burning Man ("Burning Lad")? Is Ginger really worth it? This so creepy. I hope you'll be ok at the end of this and just live a little happy life with Lucy the dog.
Am I in the minority? I adored Wayward Son.
Of course I want puppies and rainbows for Baz and Simon (okay, maybe not puppies—Baz would just eat them). But 1) it’s a new relationship and 2) they’d both just suffered insanely traumatic experiences. Simon reacted just about the way I’d expected. Not only did he lose a huge part of himself (his identity as “the Chosen One” AND his magic) but he also killed his surrogate father (who was actually his real father, go figure). Simon feels unworthy of pretty much everything—which includes Baz.
So the road is rocky. But I trust Rainbow. She loves Simon and Baz. The ending of the book gives me so much hope, I can’t wait to see what happens next.
