Do you think he thinks about going back to Erebor all the time but never goes because it's too painful? Do you think he kept in contact with Balin & some of the others? Do you think he still wakes up in confusion that he's alone? Do you think part of the reason why he agreed to take Frodo in was because being alone was no longer a comfort? Do you think he slept with a fire going even in the summer because he kept seeing the shadows of orcs & Gollum in the dark? Do you think he formed a habit of sleeping in the front of the house in his chair because a part of him kept expecting Fili & Kili to knock on his door again? Do you think he actually didn't plant the acorn after all & instead kept it in a lockbox, it's own "coffin", because to him what it represented died with Thorin?
