the scene isn't unfamiliar. on the contrary, really, you've seen it thousands of times before. it always ends with your best friend of 5 years roping you into some crazy plan you never had any intention in entertaining his antics with in the first place.
so when yangyang plops into the seat across from you at lunch, you should expect the unexpected. you should get chills from the mischievous smile he always wears, facial features heightened by the way the corners of his lips almost reach his ears. yet, you always fall for it. you never learn.

"what are you smiling so hard about? i'm surprised your cheeks haven't started to hurt yet," the corners of his lips seem to quirk up even more at your obvious confusion, "c'mon, spill. you're ruining my appetite." you groan.
"i heard something in the halls today," he finally spits out, "something about us being secretly in love with each other," what? "and i wanted to test out the theory."
it was true, you were in love with your best friend. you've been hopelessly in love with him since he stood up to your middle school bullies for you on one of the worst and after that moment, best, days of your 7th-grade career.
he didn't have to stand up for you, you could've fought your own battle after being fed up with the endless torment. after all, they just wanted to knock you down, prove that you weren't as tough as you seemed. he didn't have to stay as your friend either, your tough persona causing you to be a little lonely and in desperate need of a friend.
however, he did and he has been there for you every day since. you have been in love with him every day since.
"what theory?" you ask, trying to get what he was hinting at. "the theory that we're secretly in love with each other." his smile fades, settling for a small smirk. playful.
"and how exactly do you plan on doing that?" he quirks his eyebrow. "i am so glad you asked. what if we date until graduation day and try acting like a couple in front of everybody. the more people we fool, the more real it seems, then we'll really know who's in love with who. we're both damn good liars but the body never lies, my dear friend. what do you say?" he's actually serious? this might just be one of the hardest decisions of your young life next to college applications. graduation is in just 37 days.
eventually, you contemplate it and utter a small "okay." you're regretting this already.
