Formed in Leeds, Yard Act are a Post-Punk rock band founded in 2019 by bassist Ryan Needham and vocalist James Smith. The Overload, released on the 21st of January of 2022, is their First and Currently only Studio Album released through Island Records, and was even Nominated for the 2022 Mercury Prize. Five singles were released on The Overload from late 2021 to early 2022. The self-titled track, "The Overload" was released on 7th of September 2021. The second single, "Land of the Blind", was released on 28th of October 2021. "Payday" was released on 23rd of November 2021 The two 2022 singles were "Rich" and "Pour Another". Corresponding with the single, the music video for the self-titled track, "The Overload", was released on the band's Vevo on 7 September 2021. The video features the band performing at a Car Boot Sale. The video was directed by James Slater. Slater also directed the music videos for their second and fourth singles, "Land of the Blind" and "Rich", respectively. In an interview with DIY, lead singer James Smith notes, "I had the idea for a music video in which a magician does tricks but everybody keeps applauding. I thought it was too on the nose to be a decent satire but Iβve been subtle in the past and nobody has picked up on it so this time I thought we would just be blunt. James developed the idea and came up with the concept of the magician holding the cafΓ© hostage via hypnosis." The Overload was a Change of Pace for the music industry, and is one of the Greatest Albums to ever be dropped in the last 20 years

Gonna need to do a review of Yard Act's new album "Where's My Utopia?" at some point before I just finished listening to it and it was fucking Magnificent.

"Where's My Utopia?"- Yard Act (2024)

Teased towards by their 2023 single "The Trench coat Museum", Released on Friday the 1st of March 2024, Yard Act's "Where's My Utopia?" This LP arguably Shits on their 2021 LP "The Overload", Taking a Massive jump from their Spoken-Word Post Punk, Politically-Fuelled songs to not only Keeping these previous aspects, but also Adding on So much more, such as their Funky Pop/New Wave Influences, their ambitious, uplifting storytelling, mixed with Heartfelt messages about Life Issues and Moving on from Past Mistakes, focusing on pushing on to a Bettered Future.
It's hard picking what are the Best songs on the LP, but I would say the most notable tracks on this LP are ones such as "We Make Hits" "Dream Job" and the first half of "An Illusion" which all have more Positive Focuses in their songs. While tracks such as "When the Laughter Stops" "Down by the Stream" and "Grifters Grief" have more Pessimistic views towards them, yet with Funky baselines in the background and New Wave inspired instrumentals, making for a Fantastic Mix, and managing to create a kind of sound in music that I have Never heard from another artist before.
And finally, with tracks such as "The Undertow" "Blackpool Illuminations" and "The Vineyard of the North" tying the album together with their Mellow Monotone, Poetic spoken-word tracks, laced with a foreign feeling of nostalgia, truly making this one of the Greatest albums of the Year so far.
In Short; Yard Act have once again Out-Done themselves, and we Fucking love them for it.
HEYYY THAT'S MEEE :D
Okay, so this is the most niche thing ever, but my friend @caywall is big into this band named Yardact (I also enjoy quite a bit of their songs), and he was curious about any potential connection between them and Chonny. So now this exists in the world. The two other fans of both Chonny and Yardact are freaking out right now.

And I don't have a favourite Yard Act song, but according to Spotify statistics my most listened to song Of All Time is Dream Job, so I'll go with that

Oh my goodness so many. Buckle up. π
3. Favorite songs at the moment:
5. Top 3 songs:
6. 3 favorite genres:
Indie rock (I'm an old hipster)
60s/70s rock and pop (child of a dj)
Alternative Americana (grew up in the US Midwest birrthplace of alt country. Songs about drinking, cheating, poverty, & loss- not xenophobia and trucks. Fuck that shit)
10. Most underrated musician: um, Miles Kane. Poor guy does not get the credit he deserves. π©·ππ©΅
19. Color: Elvis Costello. Tho Fiona Apple's Red Red Red is a close second.
20. Number: Lucinda Williams. This is what country music SHOULD sound like.
28: shuffle: ooh Clairo! Love her.
30. Song from my favorite band. Ok, this is hard. Last year, Arctic Monkeys was my favorite band (and Batphone, my favorite song) but in the past 10 years, itβs Pulp. Please listen to Razzmatazz if you've already heard Common People. It's really one of their best songs: observant, acidic, and sort of dancing thru the desperation:
One more day until Yard Act in Philadelphia.
