Let's get Pulp into the next bracket. It should have been Hardcore, but that ship has sailed. 😭

The 90s MV Melee - round 2 match 17

Voter-submitted propaganda:

Common People -

"I can do his dumb little dance. How can you not like Jarvis in a shopping trolley jail"

Losing My Religion -

"that’s me in the corner (sad clown noises)"

If the Last Shadow Puppets covered Pulp I think I would die on the spot.

How did I not know that Alex and Miles took a road trip to Coachella in 2014 which started EYCTE??

In this interview (at 06.00) they talk about driving into the desert listening to old TLSP stuff. Not only that, but Miracle Aligner was first strummed on that trip too!

Oh and there’s a good bit (at about 19.52) where Miles suggests covering ‘This is Hardcore’ by Pulp and Alex says, “I said that the other night at 4am - the coolest cover”. Aghytfhtfff! 😳

"We're not Yes"

Consistently the funniest man in music.

✨Jarvis Cocker in SPIN magazine March 1996. On the cover of this issue it has the legendary Tori Amos. Scanned from a family members copy of the issue✨

I just saw Pulp and it was perfect.

I Just Saw Pulp And It Was Perfect.
I Just Saw Pulp And It Was Perfect.

I will have more to say later but it was the best show of my life. Best fans, best performance. Two encores. A NEW SONG PLAYED FOR THE FIRST TIME. Jarvis was in amazing form and the crowd danced so hard the floor was shaking. My heart is full.

On seeing Pulp's 555th show

I spent Friday the 13th 2024 at the enormous, ornate Kings Theater in Brooklyn, worshipping at the altar of Pulp. Miraculously, I was super close, center left stage, 3 people deep from the boundary rail. The crowd was not as engaged as Chicago, and the fans nowhere near as chatty. But to be eye-contact close to Jarvis Cocker? SWOON-WORTHY.

The set has been pretty similar across the tour, but I got two happy surprises. One was incorporating OU into the set! My original copy of Pulp Intro on vinyl (in all its 1993 glory including a fanclub postcard) is one of my favorite possessions. OU is a really fun pre His n Hers track. And honestly getting that + Razzmatazz + Like a Friend hit my sweet spot.

Second surprise was the debut of another new song, Got to Have Love. I didn't try to record it because my phone sucks and I wanted to be in the moment. It was good, and moreover it was fun to see the band working through new things. Being close to the stage allowed me to see how the core band members interact. It was a joy to see Mark, Candida, Nick, and Jarvis playing off each other. The additional touring members really added a lot to the sound. You could tell that everyone on stage wanted to be there and was having fun. I'm looking forward to listening to the other new tracks, but between this and Spike Island I'm hopeful we have a new album and more touring on the way.

The performance was electric, and seeing Jarvis dancing and commanding the room in all his awkward, graceful, sleazy, seductive glory was everything. He may be 61 years old today, but he hasn't lost a beat. I got actual chills during Hardcore. He murdered that song. Britpop = dead (not that Pulp ever was Britpop to me, as a fan who found the band later and grew up in a part of the US that barely heard Blur on the radio!)

This video isn't great quality, but please enjoy this snippet of I Spy. It gives you a sense of how Jarvis interacts with the crowd and how dangerous Pulp feels compared to its peers. It was magical.

2, 9, and 14 for the music ask!

i’m so sorry to hear you’re ill with covid 💔 i’m thinking of you and sending all the healing vibes your way! look after yourself 💖

Oooh good questions!

2) One band I always come back to: Wilco. Wilco not only made one of my favorite albums of all time, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, but have played with so many genres. If you are a lyrics person (like me), you'll find songs for every mood. And like my other fav, Arctic Monkeys, they still make good music decades after forming and are amazing live. In my opinion Jeff Tweedy is America's George Harrison. My "get to know Wilco" playlist is below!

9: Favorite concert: Pulp in Chicago at the Aragon Ballroom this month. Their first show of the US tour and omg: the fans were amazing, the band was tight, Jarvis Cocker was at his wiggly, seductive best, and the joy in the room was palpable. We danced so hard the floor was bouncing. I thought I'd never see Pulp since I got into the band in 2013...a year after they played their goodbye show. Highly recommend watching Pulp: A Film about Life Death, and Supermarkets.

2, 9, And 14 For The Music Ask!

14: Have you met any of your favorite bands? No, and I'm so shy I don't know if I could handle it without being a blushing mess. 🤭

3 5 6 10 19 20 28 and 30 for the music asks! 🩷

Oh my goodness so many. Buckle up. 😁

3. Favorite songs at the moment:

5. Top 3 songs:

6. 3 favorite genres:

Indie rock (I'm an old hipster)

60s/70s rock and pop (child of a dj)

Alternative Americana (grew up in the US Midwest birrthplace of alt country. Songs about drinking, cheating, poverty, & loss- not xenophobia and trucks. Fuck that shit)

10. Most underrated musician: um, Miles Kane. Poor guy does not get the credit he deserves. 🩷💜🩵

19. Color: Elvis Costello. Tho Fiona Apple's Red Red Red is a close second.

20. Number: Lucinda Williams. This is what country music SHOULD sound like.

28: shuffle: ooh Clairo! Love her.

30. Song from my favorite band. Ok, this is hard. Last year, Arctic Monkeys was my favorite band (and Batphone, my favorite song) but in the past 10 years, it’s Pulp. Please listen to Razzmatazz if you've already heard Common People. It's really one of their best songs: observant, acidic, and sort of dancing thru the desperation:
