Chapter One

You shifted in your work cubicle, trying your best to focus on the files in front of you. Mrs. Maximoff had given you paperwork duty once again, leaving you with the dulling task of putting the papers all in order.

You couldn’t seem to keep your mind off a certain redhead though. Natasha. Maria gently reminded you that it wouldn't be a terrible idea to see if she was still interested in a coffee date- but you quickly rejected her idea.

Even if you maybe, possibly, deep down, actually really wanted that coffee date.

You knew eventually you’d have to just ask- you couldn’t dwell on it forever and hope things will change. After that event in the parking lot, you were sure Natasha wouldn’t approach you until you actively showed interest. Your phone dinged once again. and you sighed- Maria again. Of course.

Maria <3: Hey! How’s work going?? Finally, asked out your favorite redhead? ;)

You huffed at the text. You loved Maria, but God. That woman was a jackass and she knew it too.

Y/N: I’m trying to. But I’m also trying to do paperwork. Stop texting me, May.

Maria <3: Hey, hey. Fine. Just know you’ll miss me. And you better ask her out!! I know she’s just waiting for your approval. You’re a perfect match, Y/N. But hey, what do I know.

You eyed the message wearily and decided against replying. She was right, you knew that much. That didn’t mean you were going to listen though. You needed to wait. Or at least until this paperwork was finished.

After ten minutes of utter boredom, you decided to make the move you never thought you’d make. You made your way to Natasha’s desk, trying your best to seem casual.

“Hey, Natasha! I’m so sorry for bothering you, I just wanted to see how you were doing.” You hesitantly said, shifting around in a futile attempt to ease your anxiety.

The redhead smirked, and you wanted to punch her right in the face. Of course, she’d be all smart and prideful about it. Jackass. “I’m fine. Just waiting for my soulmate to ask me out, nothing new.”

You rolled your eyes. “Don’t be all like that. I just… I just wanted to see if you’d be up for a coffee date, but I guess you’re not up for one so I’ll just be heading back to my desk now.”

“No, no! Don’t leave- I’m sorry for being an ass. Please, I’d love to take you out. Is this evening okay, right after work?”

You laughed, “Yes, it’s perfect. I’d love to see you there. Will you pick me up?”

Natasha nodded, “Of course little- I mean Y/N. I’m very sorry- it’s caregiving nature, I guess. Of course, no pet names right now. Anyways, I’ll let you get back to work now. And Y/N?”

You turned your gaze back in her direction. “Thanks for giving me a chance. I won’t let you down, I promise.” The redhead said sincerely and you nodded with a genuine smile.

“I have no doubt you’ll be a great date.”

The rest of the workday was incredibly uneventful. All that you could think about was a coffee date with Natasha. Part of you wished you hadn’t agreed to right after work- your business casual clothes were fine, but you were a little self-conscious about it.

Finally, it was time. The redhead met you out in the parking lot with a grin and opened the passenger door. “You can go in first, baby. Wait sorry, no pet names yet.” She apologized, and you smiled softly at the genuineness in her voice.

“No, it’s okay. We’ll get there at some point. Honestly, I’m just trying to get used to this whole soulmate and caregiving thing, you know?” She nodded while she joined you in the car. “Not to be too open, but it’s just hard for me to trust… yet.”

Natasha gave you an understanding expression, “That’s okay. When you’re ready, I’ll be right here. Go at your own pace.” She reassured as the both of you drove down the highway.

The ride was comfortably silent as you admired the passing buildings, and Natasha admired you. Part of you did feel guilty- you couldn’t deny that. She had been so kind, and all you could do was say you weren’t ready.

“Alright, we’re here! I thought a cat cafe would be nice, I’ve been here a few times, and the environment is very peaceful. There’s a small section for little ones, so if you want to play with toys or anything you can- there's also some small foods- no pressure though! Not at all-, I’m sorry. Am I pressuring you?” The redhead asked anxiously.

You chuckled, “Nat, you’re rambling. You’re not pressuring me, you’re very understanding actually. Now let’s go in, shall we?”

“Happily.” She replied, and hesitantly reached out for your hand. You accepted it happily and intertwined your fingers together as you made your way into the quaint little restaurant.

A happy man with an arrow symbol on his neck approached you both, smiling at you both. “Hello, and welcome to Cats and Coffee. How may I get you started- oh, and we have our menu on that chalkboard if you need help deciding!” He finished in a cheery voice and headed behind the counter.

Natasha glanced over the menu for a while before finally deciding on what she wanted. “I think I’ll have a coffee with sugar and cream, please. Also, a blueberry muffin to go along with it.” She ordered.

“Of course ma’am! And for you?” The man turned to face you, and you finally decided.

“A hot chocolate with a frosted cookie please!” He nodded, adding up your total.

“Gotcha! That will be six dollars! I hope you and your little one have a lovely day!” He said to Natasha as she paid and led you over to a booth. You brought over the food and gently set it down.

“You know, you didn’t have to pay for me.” You remarked, taking a sip of your warm beverage. “Thank you, though. I truly do appreciate free food.”

Natasha laughed- god her laugh was addicted. “Hey, no problem. I’m always up for paying.”

As you both ate your food, you couldn’t help but look over at the toys section. It never really had happened before- you took a glance at it but brushed off the feeling. Now, you just couldn’t. You felt something drawing you to it.

“You know little one, you can go and play if you want to. You can trust me.” Natasha said sincerely, while you wiggled around. Butterflies filled up your stomach, but you decided to do something you never thought you’d do- you made your way to the playmat and sat down.

The cafe was fairly empty, so no other little ones occupied the area. You hesitated before reaching over to a set of building blocks. At first, you weren’t sure what to do, but you started building them into a house.

Moments passed until you were finally finished- you turned around to look at Natasha for approval, and were surprised almost to see her looking back at you with adoration.

“Do you like it, Natty?” You half whispered as she walked over to you, and she smiled back at you before replying joyfully,

“Like it? Honey, I love it! You did so well, little duckling. Do you want me to drop you off at your apartment?” Natasha asked as she scooped you up and walked you over to the car.

You looked up at her loving gaze before replying quietly, “Only if you stay with me.”
