Amor Tam Pulcher | KTH - Prologue

A dark base colour. Very dark. Black, I dare to say, but it presents shades of dark blue here and there. Scattered in a natural even manner were a few clouds and, at last, sitting in the centre, amidst a bed of shimmering white dots, was the moon, shining in all its might.

It was a fresh spring day night. The atmosphere was changing. The environment welcomed a highly awaited scent of blooming flowers from the gardens, the vases on the balconies and the trees outlining the streets. As the fresh breeze blew, it took away all the residues of the winter season: the cold, the dead leaves on the side of the road, all the ashes of the wood that had been burnt for the heating up and all the smoke it'd produced.

The night was very bright. The moonlight put to shame the few lampposts along the road. The rays were so strong they worked as a perfect night light for the townspeople. As the breeze blew, wind chimes rang throughout and their sound vibration penetrated the ears in the most pleasing of ways.

Just like in movies, this was background decoration, the setting in which the story starts from a wider point of view only to shrink and focus closer, on a tinier scale. Uninteresting background details that had little meaning to the lead characters―something to just occasionally comment on.

They had each other, confined in a cosy bedroom, in a comfortable environment. The bright moon and the stars went unnoticed as Daphne took an old book from her little personalized bookshelf.

The room was dim because she hated turning on the major light when she could see perfectly with her lamp. She had one on her desk and one on her nightstand. The lighting was golden, the room was warm and he was there, shirtless, with ruffled hair and just the trousers of his pyjamas but he was there and that was all that mattered to her.

She wore a matching sleep outfit, shorts and a tank top. Hurriedly walking back onto the carpet and off the freezing tiles of her room, she joined him. He was sitting at the end of her bed. Body leaning backwards on his arms with legs that only spread more to welcome her to sit which she did.

"You see this here?" she began losing the leather rope tied around the book, "It belonged to my granny but she gifted it to me last year as a Christmas present". He didn't immediately respond, at least not verbally. He wrapped his arms around her with ease and perked his chin on her shoulders welcoming her in a warm embrace. "It's a flowers book, she called it. It has pretty much every flower she has ever grown or collected in her life".

"I thought your grandma sells greens at the town square," his velvet voice came through from right next to her ear causing a wave of chills to run from head to toe. "Yes, she does but she also used to collect a lot of flowers. In fact, she loved them, loves them still, and she has them all around her place," his only reply was tightening the hug because no matter how close he could be to her, it was never close enough. "And guess what I found here?"

"What?"

"I'd insist you guessed but you wouldn't so..." she quickly muttered but he heard her and simply replied by tickling her. "So, I found... me,"

"You!"

"Yeah, me! The flower Daphne" from his point of view, he could see her cheek swell as she smiled causing him to smile right after, unconsciously. "You didn't know you bore the same name as a flower?"

"No, I mean yes but not this flower. I know that my name in Greek means 'Laurel', a plant from the mythological story of Daphne and Apollo. It's the sole reason you call me Lauri," she turned to face him. The distance is almost nonexistent. He went in first and left a peck on her lips that proceeded into multiple ones. Lips. Cheek. Neck. Shoulder blade.

"Do you like your namesake flower?"

"I've got to be honest with you and disagree. I mean, it's also an evergreen plant like the Laurel but it doesn't sound as special. Lori does though," now it was his turn to smile. From the exterior, it looked subtle but his insides were jumping and somersaulting. She probably could hear his heart thumping against her back for how much it was pressed against his chest. "But Daphne is just as beautiful".

She shrugged and denied that. "And, besides, it just reminds me of the sad fate of the nymph, you know. I completely get that Apollo wasn't in his right state of mind because of Cupid but it's still sad," he totally could agree with her, not the sad part but surely the mental part, yeah. That's how he felt whenever she was close. Whether she was right next to him, farther away in the same room or building, sharing the same air with him whenever they kissed, in his thoughts all the time or when he was inside of her, the only thing he could think about was how close he was to losing his mind for good. So good. Heavenly good. Marvellous. Perfect. That is what she is anyway.

"You know... Daphne was a beautiful nymph and the personification of the laurel which is, as you know, an evergreen plant. I don't think of her fate as sad. First, she wished it to herself," The look she gave him had him chuckling, "Second, an evergreen plant never dies. It lives in the foreverness of its beauty," just like you, he wanted to add but surely she could read that from his eyes.

His eyes glowed when they were on her. Stars start shimmering in the chocolate brown colour of his iris. It was hard to break eye contact because the view was breathtaking like fireworks on New Year's night. She couldn't help herself from catching red shades on her cheeks. She didn't mind it anymore. She'd just smile through it. He wasn't shy about his feelings so she wasn't going to be any different.

A little giggle came out of her as she broke eye contact and started fiddling with the corner of the book. He smiled, reading through her body language like it was his favourite novel.

Never could he have thought of reaching this point where he'd have her in his arms like this, in a moment like this, doing things like this. Back then, the only assurance he had was that she could make his heart flutter in ways itself didn't know about: her smile, her face whenever she was focused on reading or just her simple presence.

Oh, God. No way she's real.

Before they could get here, it seemed she didn't know of his existence and yet he felt like she was watching every one of his moves and he had to be perfect, absolutely perfect for her, just her. That's the only thing she deserved for being perfection incarnate.

From the day he set eyes on her, he'd decided that everything he'd do was going to be just for her. The efforts paid off anyway.

There's nothing more beautiful than knowing that the person you love, loves you just as much-he'd say even more but he doubts she could ever love him more than he loves her because he loved her so much, maybe too much, but it's all for a good cause.

Her smile whenever she came out to go to school or went back in from school. Perfect. The sound of her voice whenever she came up to him during lunch break―oh, and let's not talk about how adorable she was whenever she happily hopped up to him while at it. Perfect. Her face. Oh so perfect. He could stare at her face all day and never get tired, never get uninterested. It was like a TV series with an infinite amount of seasons that got better as they went on. A perfect TV series. He could fully focus with her around and certainly just on her and nothing else―he could barely hear what she'd be talking about because he'd be busy watching every single change in her facial expression and never get bored. Boredom went out of his life the day she came in.

If he could, he'd write poems on how pretty she looked, on how perfect she was. He'd probably make the next Catullus or even better, he'd dare say. Everyone would love to read about her and how she makes him feel. He even wonders how she isn't loved, worshipped in fact, by everyone but he's glad he's the only one whom she hops to whenever class is dismissed, the only one to have her cheeks explore all possible shades of red, the only one whose arms she'd willingly fall asleep in between.

The silence that sat with them was comfortable, to say the least. It felt like a bigger and warmer hug embracing them and encapsulating them in their world.

"Talking about evergreens, my faves are these," she turned the pages while maintaining the same height as his face so that when she looked back up, the eye contact was restored, "Gardenias,"

"Oh. So pretty. Beautiful".

ATP; 01 | Love Is All Around

Early in September, just hours before midday. The sun is not high yet but shines light through the whole town. Like the weak and bright sunrays, Daphne's dad drove on the road, pushing through the fresh waves of the summer morning breeze. As background noise was crunching stones produced by the tyres.

Breeze combed the hair strokes. Morning freshness caused the rise of goosebumps. Butterflies in the stomach showed how excited Daphne was about moving. Yes, moving.

Usually, they'd come to the countryside only for the summer holidays but now she would stay longer. A smile was printed on her face as she observed. She was going to like this, she thought. She was going to like this place, this new beginning. She started regretting ever complaining about moving in the first place.

Her mother was in the passenger seat explaining how the town was beautiful, her fingers pointed at random spots occasionally. Daphne wasn't even listening to her. She only thought that her mother could save her breath because she didn't need any more convincing: the view before her spoke for itself.

Daphne lowered her window and, with an arm swinging outside, she observed, she beheld the sight. The car took a turn and now they were riding up a hill along a road surrounded by beautiful houses.

It'd been long since she last came here but she couldn't tell if the place had changed or she'd just forgotten.

Women were spreading out the laundry, dusting carpets, watering flowers. Pink, yellow, red, purple flowers. They painted the street. Some kids were playing in their front yard. Dogs barked and ran to their gates as they drove by. The bottom floors housed a variety of shops and all had a little banner on the doors that said 'open'. A flower shop. Greengrocery. Ironmongery. A bakery. A butcher's shop. And many more. The people looked friendly as they greeted them. She happily greeted back, and her smile expanded.

"This place is beautiful, Mom," her words caught the respondent off-guard as she immediately looked in the backseat to agree with her daughter, glad she wasn't angry anymore. "We're almost there," the dad informed, taking another turn.

The road they were riding led away from that loving neighbourhood of flowers—fields on the left and a few farms on the right. Daphne's dark hair waved with the breeze. The smell of manure filled her nostrils but instead of feeling unpleasant, it reminded her of how lovely living in the countryside was. Horses were munching on the grass. Bells on sheep rang as she passed by the flock. The manure smell was soon replaced by the one of grass coming from the left where tractors were working on the field. The big vehicles were shaping the dried grass into big blocks reminding her of her childhood and how she used to spend her time watching the whole process.

Their destination was her grandparents' place. It was a huge white two-story building with a dark brown roof, divided into two separated yet joined houses: one for them and one for the grandparents. They were struggling financially in the city so they opted to move to the countryside since they couldn't afford to pay the rent. She didn't fully oppose their decision but living in the countryside for God knows how long scared her but now that she was there, she wasn't bothered anymore.

As mentioned before, the place wasn't completely foreign to her: she'd come here with her family for the summer holidays and she enjoyed her stay with the difference of knowing she'd go back to the city and therefore back to her friend. Yeah, her friend. Singular. She didn't have friends here if not her grandparents' neighbours' daughter, Cleo, who, though, was her complete opposite: while Daphne liked spending sunny days reading on a spread-out blanket in her garden, Cleo liked running up and down and playing. Daphne felt like Cleo was like a child whose energy you must match, or else they just drain you out.

"We're here," the dad informed as he took another turn out of the long field-side road and climbed up towards a house slightly hidden by trees. Their new home. By the gate were her grandparents happily waiting for them with two big dogs beside them.

The road leading to the house cut through a mildly thick forest. The house was directly facing the road while their neighbours' were on the sides.

Daphne's smile broadened as she hopped down the car and then into her grandparents' arms. Kisses, compliments and continuous reminders of how much she grew as they hugged her before hugging the parents. Now her attention was on the two dogs that couldn't hold back from barking, hopping left and right with wiggling tails. Loki and Luke, the first was an Australian shepherd and the second was a German shepherd. They too have grown so much and she felt it the most when they got up to greet her and reached her shoulders.

Playing with their fur, she wondered whether to help her family with the bags but they read her mind and told her to go inside and not bother. She'd normally insist further but this time she didn't stay any second longer and rushed inside the house. The two dogs ran after her.

Her parents and she would live in the house on the left while her grandparents were their next-door neighbours on the right. The front door was unlocked. She quickly left her shoes outside before going inside.

It was just as she remembered it. Just as they had left it. Beneath her naked feet, the tiles were cold and of an umber brown that would create a mocha shade if mixed with the milk colour of the walls, a gradient colour that from the bottom starts in brown, slowly fades into caramel and finishes in a paler tone topped by the white-coloured painting ceiling. Matching was the chocolate brown curb.

The floor started with a rectangular anteroom. On the right was an umbrella rack, above it hangers for jackets and hats; on the left was space for shoes, a bench to sit on and put them on, hangers for keys and the staircase. Further in, the space was divided into three: the living room on the left, the dining room on the right and in the middle, leading to the garden, her second favourite place in the world, was a little space.

The living room was placed between two walls, the right one was covered in tall glass windows facing the garden, and the right one welcomed a door opening that led to a tiny hallway presenting two doors, one was the of the store and one of the bathroom. Cream sofa with green uniquely shaped pillows. A brown armchair on the left and a little swing chair on the right. Between the couch and the fireplace was a coffee table decorated with a vase of flowers and a cascade of books on the second layer. On the floor was a wide oval carpet. The fireplace was against a wall between two door openings leading to a study room.

The dining room was composed of a round table surrounded by four chairs. Further to the right was the kitchen, simple and traditional, light-brown in colour. The counters were covered with utensils, flower pots and miscellaneous items. On the tile-covered walls were hangers holding gloves, kitchen tools and aprons. The stove was as empty as the sink. The coffee machine on one side, the microwave on the other. Hanging by the handle of the oven was a chequered green cloth. Next to the stove was the dishwasher and in front of both, on the floor, was the kitchen mat. Pots resided in the wide drawers, plates in the cupboards. A double-door fridge finished the kitchen design.

She gently quieted the dogs and took her time to examine the room. A smile lit up her face whenever she took notice of any small details that reminded her of her childhood. She strolled through the kitchen, running her finger across the counters and was pleased to see that everything was sparkling clean. She couldn't stop grinning as she thought about how excited her grandmother must have been while cleaning the house in anticipation of their arrival. It was always heartwarming to see her grandmother filled with joy. She'd get very energetic and talkative unable to contain her happiness. Witnessing her grandmother's happiness was infectious, making her feel just as happy as her.

Daphne quickly rushed and ran upstairs, the dogs matched her vibe behind her. The walls that ran along to the top floor had a light floral print that gave the house the vintage and cosy look of a cottage.

While Loki and Luke ran around, she slowed down: in front of her was the little nook where she'd spend her time reading during rainy days while on the left, behind the railing, were four doors: her bedroom, her parents', her sister's and the bathroom. She missed her sister so dearly. They could meet only during summer break because she was studying abroad but she didn't linger on it much and proceeded to her bedroom. As she opened the door, the dogs ran inside.

It was just as she'd left it and that had her tear up a bit. On her left was her little bookshelf, on her right was her dresser and a little farther away from it, was her bed. The bedsheets were identical and not dusty to the touch. Another sign of her grandmother's hard work.

The blanket was light. Pink floral prints. White pillows in front of which sat her plushie, an adorable teddy bear her grandmother had gifted her when she was five. The nightstand welcomed a lamp and adorable miniature decorations she found in her grandparents' attic. Opposite the bed was the window brightening the room. In front of it was her desk and to its right, in a little nook, was her wardrobe.

After walking around the room for a few moments, she dropped herself on the bed, the softener scent filled her nostrils. She stared up at the ceiling. In the corner of her eyes, she could see the waving tails of Luke and Loki as they roamed around before walking by her legs and caressing her with their soft fur.

She was certainly going to miss her only friend in the city. Daphne had particular difficulties with making friends because she found it hard to vibe with a lot of people so finding her match was a real struggle. It took her a long time before she met Margot. The two matched like pieces of a puzzle. They vibed with each other so well. They had so much in common. To understand it better, Margot was the type of neighbour Daphne was wishing for rather than the one she had in reality because Margot was just like her. While Cleo would scrunch her face and call her boring whenever she'd say that she'd rather read all day than play, Margot would agree with her and sit down so they could read together. Margot was the type of friend who didn't feel as overwhelming. The type of friend whose simple presence was enjoyable: you didn't have to talk, play or do anything in general. Daphne and Margot brought ease to each other by simply being in the same room or space. But Daphne also couldn't fully blame Cleo: she'd met Margot in 10th grade while she had known Cleo since when they were kids. Any child would find reading all day boring. A straight-up form of torture.

Downstairs she could hear her family rustling with stuff. One of the dogs rushed out of the room while she still lay on her back, arms spread, looking up at the white ceiling in pure bliss. She didn't budge for a few more seconds and probably wouldn't have at all for minutes if she hadn't heard an unfamiliar voice come from downstairs.

It was a voice that sounded brighter than she'd ever heard in a long time. She was sure she'd left just her grandparents and parents downstairs but the voice she was hearing was female and sounded brighter than her granny's and mom's. So she sat up. Instantly. Almost robotically.

As her, the dog sensed the presence and rushed out of the room. Daphne followed right after but she didn't go downstairs. She was about to but she noticed the dogs weren't barking up and down which meant that whoever it was knew them. They were already familiar with them. A strange feeling settled in her, a feeling that held her back from going down the stairs and simply had her stretching over the railing to see. A bit shy, you can assume.

"She's upstairs," she heard her grandmother say, leaving Daphne increasingly confused. Who could be coming up to see her? She had no idea, but from the bubbly demeanour of the person, she could tell they were happy to see her. A shy smile emerged on her face just as the person appeared on the stairs. "Hey, Daphne," the voice sang as they saw her leaning on the railing. They rushed upstairs and were now standing in front of her. "Do you remember me?" Daphne's shy smile grew. How could she forget her? Caramel brown bouncy curls, freckled cheeks, moss green eyes, and lips as reddish as her cheeks. She hadn't changed a bit. She had grown, but it was still the same Cleo.

"Course I do," she happily answered and Cleo giggled. The bright smile that decorated her face made Daphne regret everything she was thinking about earlier. The smile behaved like a vibrant filter animating her memories. "Granny told me you were going to move here and I've never been happier. I thought we'd never meet again," she happily spoke while Daphne came out of her trance, grabbed her hands and led her to her bedroom.

As happy as the latter was, Cleo couldn't hold back from giggling all the time unaware of just how much happiness she'd put in the other girl's heart. A few moments ago, Daphne was thinking about how making friends was so hard for her only for Cleo to happily hop into her home, all happy to see her. Never would Daphne have thought that someone could be waiting for her so excitedly. It warmed her heart so much.

"How have you been?" she spoke first. Cleo's face glowed even brighter as she started talking. Amazingly bored, she said. Amazing because she's fine, no illness nor body ache or particular border to carry. Bored because, aside from Daphne, the neighbours were younger than her and therefore felt more like kids to babysit rather than people to make actual friends with. Granny started cleaning the house a month in advance, she narrated, and she helped her out on it. Said she enjoyed cleaning while listening to Granny telling stories about Daphne. It increased her excitement and her will to help Granny. She spent days here at the house with granny and never got tired. Granny tried to tell her not to worry but Cleo was just as excited. She'd spend the day cleaning and preparing and then would head home for dinner after which she'd be crocheting little cute things for the both.

Daphne listened with a never-ending smile. All of this for her? Wow. "I have them at my place. If you wish, later I can take you there and give you them," Daphne simply nodded. Eagerly. Happily. A happiness that then spiralled into taking Cleo in for a hug. "I'm just as happy to see you. I thought I wouldn't make friends here," Cleo dramatically gasped and clutched her chest, denying all of Daphne's beliefs. "You'll never be friend-less. Not under my watch," they both laughed before they heard a slight knock on the door. "Granny is going to prepare lunch and asked if the two of you would like to join".

✿..。

"I caught enough vegetables from my farm so we could have fun," Granny spoke to the girls' happy faces. They were going to make pizza. Pizzas. Granny had already prepared the dough. They now had to set the ingredients and make unique pizzas. Cleo took on the onions while Daphne took a few zucchini to chop. In the fridge was a container of mozzarella and one of cheese. They had everything at their disposal.

They spent the following forty minutes chopping all the ingredients, blending tomatoes for the sauce, cutting the mozzarella into blocks and grating the cheese. Once done with that, Granny started working on the dough while the young girls buttered up the pans and prepared the oven. Next door Daphne's parents were unpacking and settling in.

"So, how was the city?" Cleo asked, starting a conversation. "Nice, in its way. Yeah, nice,"

"You've got friends you'll miss?"

"A friend, yeah. Margot. We met in 10th grade. She's a great person but knowing her, the distance is going to make the friendship falter," as she spoke, Granny smiled. She was listening and knew who she was talking about. Granny and Daphne's mother were more like sisters than anything else. Daphne's mom always kept her updated on her life and Daphne's so Granny knows how hard it is for Daphne to make friends. She'd suspected it since the girl was a little child because she could see how socializing wasn't on the list: Daphne could spend an eternity of time by herself and never get bored or feel lonely. It didn't bother Granny much but as Daphne grew so did her mother's worries. Whenever Daphne's mom called, she'd never forget to state how bothered she was about seeing her daughter be all reserved so you can imagine how happy she became the day Daphne asked her if she could invite a friend over.

"A friend? A friend! God, yes, invite your friend over! I told her. Ooh, I'm so happy. Like, I get it. She finds solace simply in herself which is a good thing, awesome in fact, because it means that no one can hurt her because, you know, out there are monsters in human form ready to just hurt people but just one person once in a while never hurts, you get me?" she told Granny on the phone. Daphne's mom is a talkative person who's scared of miscommunication and misunderstandings so whenever she's speaking, she can't hold back from clarifying every single thing she said making her wholly sound in panic.

Granny found that adorable, just like Daphne's dad did. But Daphne wasn't like her mom, she was like her dad and like Granny too. A person of a few words. Someone who enjoyed listening more than speaking.

"Oh, why's that?" Cleo asked. "Our friendship isn't really the type that goes on both physically and virtually. We... we don't text," Cleo nodded in acknowledgement before focusing back on transferring the dough from the board to the pan. "Thank god we're neighbours then," Cleo giggled. Her words warmed Daphne's heart who couldn't help but giggle as well. In the background, Granny struggled with holding back her smile.

"Are you still the bibliophile I used to know?" she proceeded. Another warm smile on her face as Daphne nodded, "I got tons of books at mine. I don't exactly classify myself as a bibliophile too but I do read. On special occasions, but I do"

Daphne chuckled and assured her she'd explore her bookshelf. Cleo giggled in response. She continued, "Do you have any specific thing to do these days?"

"No, not exactly. Why?"

"I was planning on giving you a town tour. A tour of my house, our neighbourhood, the neighbouring neighbourhoods, the town centre and, eventually, our school. You down?" Daphne quickly looked at her grandma in search of a nod of consent which she found and followed through with, agreeing to Cleo's plans. "We'll do all that today?"

"Oh, no. My god. If we did, it'd mean I carelessly showed you the place but that's not what it'll be. Once we've done the town tour, we'll go pre-school shopping. I know a store that sells the cutest school supplies I've ever laid eyes on".

They talked about their favourite school supplies: Daphne admitted to having a passion for decorating diaries and planners; Cleo's the same but decorates notebooks. Cleo got to know how a perfect academic performance was a priority to Daphne. She wasn't surprised. Daphne got to know that Cleo didn't change much and cherishes a good time above bending over a book and reading all day. She, as well, wasn't surprised. While Daphne is a dog person, Cleo fancies cats. Cleo adores sunny days, Daphne'd rather stay under a downpour than a burning-hot sun. Daphne's an early bird. Cleo's a night owl.

Overall, Daphne could tell that they were two different faces of the same coin. Equally different. Cleo was going to be a hit of fresh breeze to her pretty monotone life. She's someone who loves indulging in the same routines but, in that moment, she was ready to change them all for Cleo.

Can't really blame her. You have yourself someone eagerly waiting for you despite having seen you years ago and then we talk.

✿..。

By noon, all the pizzas were ready, hot and sizzling delicacies. As they waited, the whole family, Cleo's included, helped with setting the table on the veranda. Eight chairs. A round wide dining table. A floral print tablecloth. A vase of fresh flowers in the centre. Scattered evenly were jars of water, fresh and sparkling. In front of each chair was a plate sided by a fork and a knife. No need for spoons.

Birds chirped. Dogs barked. Cutlery clicked on plates. Water hit the kitchen sink whenever someone washed their hands or rinsed a utensil.

"Food's going to be up in minutes," Cleo announced and soon everyone was sat at the table. Granny and Daphne's mom came on the veranda with pizzas placed on round wooden boards. Everyone seated exclaimed in joy, complementing the cooks.

Once they've brought enough, they finally sat at the table. They said the grace before they started sharing the pizzas into slices. One helped the other and soon everyone had something on their plate, a bite between their teeth.

Cleo sat next to Daphne. They each had a slice of the pizza the other prepared and were complementing each other on the result. Smiles never faded away. Beside Cleo was her brother, Cole. He too was smiling, laughing in fact, with the adults. Beside him, his father.

Daphne had met them and had a little conversation with them. Cole had just graduated high school and would go to the University by October. He had a car of his own and was working on getting an apartment too. Daphne didn't see the mother and no one mentioned her so she didn't pry further but that didn't stop her from wondering.

Cleo's father loved dad jokes. He couldn't help but stick one every two sentences. They made people laugh for the sole reason of being hilarious, so stupid that it has you wondering how can someone even come up with them. He had a deep voice that made everything he said sound serious which made the jokes come off even funnier. Cole took after him. He too had a deep voice but he didn't make any hilarious jokes. Everything he did and said sounded very mature. Daphne assumed that he probably read a lot or had a good academic performance. He just sounded like he could be the class president, like the type of teenage student who could argue with a scumbag of a teacher pushing sixty who feels heavily entitled.

Cleo's voice contrasted theirs. She was the bright moon on a dark and starless night. Her voice was as chirpy as her laugh. She looked like the type of person who could rock golden shades because she glowed. She glows. She looked like the type of girl you'd always want to be happy, never sad, never see cry. The type of girl whose sad face could induce the watcher into a great state of melancholy. The type of person that can make anyone empathic.

A part of her almost reminded Daphne of her mother with the only difference that while her mother talked so much in fear of causing a misunderstanding, Cleo talked so much because she was simply made like that. Her mind was a running film strip.  A very fast one and she was always in a hurry to talk about it in every of its details.

The lunch went on like this. Laughter was the only thing you could hear. Some dad jokes here and there but all for fun. All in happiness.

Daphne in that moment thought that her past life wasn't a life. Was she dead the whole time because she started feeling alive only this day, in this instant, sitting between her mom and her old-yet-new friend, eating pizza in the wonderful atmosphere of the sunny day.

Yeah, she was probably dead the whole time. Or at least a zombie.

—Now playing: Silver Lining by The Neighbourhood ✫

Warm water fell on his head, trickling down his body, moulding his hair into a smooth surface, enhancing his eyelashes and relaxing his muscles. The ticking sounds of water drops on the tiles of the shower were soothing to his eardrums.

The temperature was just right, not scorching-hot, not freezing-cold like the tiled wall behind him and not as chilly as the air that laced his neighbourhood. He'd already rinsed his body and hair and stood under the showerhead looking for solace in the soothing feeling warm water gave his muscles.

The hour hand had passed five and inched closer to six. Five-thirty-two his phone said once he turned it on, towel wrapped around his body and one hanging loosely around his neck.

Nothing important occupied his notifications bar so he turned the phone off.

He wasn't in a hurry, settled important things the previous day so all he had to do was get ready. It took him little time to pick his clothes, cargo pants, a simple T-shirt and a sweater. He left the latter on the bed and went to the bathroom to dry his hair better. All this in twenty minutes.

Since the house was silent, his mother upstairs sleeping and his grandmother reading on her armchair in silence, he finished up a few tasks and grabbed something to munch on before waving at the grandmother and leaving.

A few steps away from his house, he turned a cigarette on, knowing that he had some time before the bus would arrive.

The neighbourhood was in the same condition as his house: silent and asleep. Dogs didn't bark as he walked past the gates, people weren't working on their farms or their gardens, kids weren't running up and down their compounds, happily screaming. The majority of the houses had dark windows with just a few lit up.

From the house he just surpassed came out a trio: a parent with two kids. They hopped onto the car sitting by the fence and drove off.

In the compound of the house he was heading closer to was a student around his age, with a high chance of being younger, opening their gate and exiting. They immediately plug their earphones in, eyes lingering on the phone looking for the right playlist.

Taehyung would normally do the same but he had someone waiting for him.

His backpack hung loosely on a shoulder. One hand held his phone and the other his cigarette. Jungkook wasn't available to pick everyone up that's why sitting on the bench at the bus stop, was a blonde-haired girl typing away at her phone.

Taehyung saw her in the split-second moment he removed his eyes from his phone but only greeted her once he sat beside her. Close to no time was left for them to talk before the bus arrived and opened its doors. Squeezing the cigarette beneath his shoe and taking a mint gum from his pocket, he got on sitting in the front next to Adrielle, seats facing the back.

"Oof! The breeze is so chilly," Adrielle whined, rubbing her arms. Taehyung agreed only after he'd comfortably placed his bag between his feet.

Mother Nature got tired of Rainy Cloud's performance so they went off stage but left their traces behind which were bright-grey chilly mornings—the day would turn out sunny only if Breeze was done cleaning the stage and deleting every trace of the performance.

At the following stops, more students got on the bus. Some were middle schoolers, others were high schoolers. Even elementary kids got on with their parents following behind, holding their hands tightly as they looked for a seat and tried not to fall.

He instinctively checked the doors, looking at the people getting on, recognising their faces.

—Now playing: Infrunami by Steve Lacy ✫

At the fifth bus stop, Taehyung's eyes lingered more on the new passengers. Around six people got on but his eyes fell on a pair, with a major focus on one. The two girls got on from the middle doors and were beelining for the back seats. One, with shoulder-length curly hair, wore a bright dress with a wool sweater on top. The other had wavy dark hair that fell till mid her back and was dressed in a pair of jeans, a striped oversized wool sweater and headphones around her neck. This one caught his attention.

Once they sat down, he recognised the first one. Cleo was the school's number-one volleyball player but the girl next to her was a completely new face, a very pretty one, he thought.

Since the girls were facing his seat at just a bit of distance, he turned his phone on and tried to mask his staring and look for a distraction but whenever the bus stopped he'd quickly check in their direction and stare for a few seconds. Adrielle was too engrossed in her book to notice what caused distress in her friend.

If she did maybe she would've noticed how he went on Instagram and improperly looked at stories since his eyes were trying to capture the story behind the girl sitting in front of his eyes. Maybe she would've noticed how, after letting the stories scroll on their own, he'd leave the application and swipe left and right on his home screen as if looking for something to do but failing since he wasn't looking at his phone.

Her inattention allowed him to admire the unknown girl undisturbed until Jimin got onto the bus. "Heya! How ya doing?" he asked after squeezing his way to his friends and placing his bag between his feet. One hand in his pocket, the other holding at the handle dangling by his head for support. His voice was like an alarm to Taehyung's ears, waking him up from his sleep, placing an end to his daydreams.

During his admiration time, he was able to catch a few things about the unknown girl: she likes reading a lot and she was a good listener, perfect for a talkative person like Cleo. The two girls talked only for a bit before minding their business—Cleo crocheted while the girl read her book.

Because of the distance, he couldn't read the title of the book but he managed to notice a few things about her features. He loved the way her curtain bangs crowned her face when she bent her head to read. Loved her posture as she did so, one leg across the other and hands on the book with one occasionally going up to her hair and playing with the strokes. Loved the way she flicked her finger through them. Loved the way she'd adjust her hair, pushing it to the back with no use since they'd return to the front. They looked fluffy.

He didn't know if it was his delusion but it appeared to him that she blinked in slow motion adding to the poised aura around her.

She was unobtrusive, blending well with the background, but still stood out like the North Star in a night sky. She had a particular lueur around her.

He loved the way she softly changed position, switched the leg, resting her back against the seat. She'd raised her headphones and the music isolated her from the rest of the world as she paid no attention to the passengers or the occasions when Cleo would lean her head on her shoulder. The headphones came off only when Cleo started packing up her things since they got closer to school.

Thanks to that he too registered his surroundings and got ready to come down.

The bus eventually reached the terminal and everyone got off. Again, he stretched his neck to look for the girl. Grew a bit confused when he didn't see her. Calmed down once he saw her trekking up to school next to her friend.

Jimin and Adrielle were busy talking as they walked. He was busy looking at the girl, at the way she walked and the way the breeze moved her hair but all this was soon interrupted when Jungkook ran, wrapping an arm around his neck and dragging him in for a hug. Taehyung wanted to punch his guts but didn't.

"Good morning!" the friend sang, messing Taehyung's hair a bit before letting him go. Next to him soon appeared Avyanna. "Nothing's good about the morning. You said you wouldn't pick anyone up today for a stupid ass reason and now you're here with Avyanna meaning that you drove her here," Jimin whined. Since Taehyung had lost the girls' traces, he finally paid attention to the conversation.

"Jimin, you shut the fuck up because you live three steps away from school," Jungkook replied, shooting glares, "But Kook, you're basically our chauffeur," Adrielle almost whispered before bolting off as Jungkook did the same behind her. Her screamed laughs filled the air. "Hey, don't touch her. You're the one in the wrong," Jimin joked as he handed his bag to Avyanna and ran up to them, dragging Jungkook away by his backpack.

Avyanna and Taehyung calmly walked, watching the playful catfight unfold in front of them. In the back of his mind was the unknown girl.

—Now playing: Pink + White by Frank Ocean ✫

Taehyung's english teacher was the type who showed students their passion for the subject they taught. When they're talking and explaining to the class, they use the right words to convey their message, to make the students feel the same way they feel. When you listen to them, you can agree that they'd fallen in love with the subject and wanted the students to do the same or at least not look down on the subject, presenting all the merits.

That morning they were talking about an important literary figure whose picture was printed on the open page of their book, a book rendered useless since the teacher didn't need it and was able to teach just as perfectly. They talked about the biography like they were presenting themselves. Listed the titles of their works by heart. Quickly briefed their content before digging into each one deeply.

They turned the page—the first work was right there. Spent more time explaining, pointing out details and making connections with precessors and successors. They turned the page again where was a piece of the work printed, the title at the top of the page in big characters.

The teacher read it, sentence by sentence, pointing out the hidden meanings, the word puns, the figures of speech and the overall construction. Their eyes almost seemed to glitter as they did so. Their tone sounded almost rhetorical as they considered the work to be a wonder in everyone's eyes.

The class wasn't exactly silent. Some people were talking in the rows in the back. Others were completely silent minding their business on their phones or working on other subjects. But the teacher wasn't alone: some students were following up with what they said like Adrielle whose book was full of coloured highlights and notes.

Behind them, Jimin also tried to keep up but struggled to keep his eyes open, his face sliding off his palm. On the other hand, Jungkook and Avyanna were playing together on their phones, books left open on their desks like they were simple accessories.

Taehyung wasn't so different from them, a combination of all of them in fact. His book was open and not a simple accessory, his phone was turned off and left in a corner of his desk but in the back of his mind was a bit of sleepiness and whatever the teacher said while in the forefront was the image of the unknown girl.

He'd never seen a beauty like that. Yes, his friends could be classified as some of God's best artworks but she was The Artwork. Well-done.Well-crafted. Planned. He must have drawn many sketches with a light pencil, erasing underwhelming details, correcting them till He was satisfied. All must have taken time—so much time—and the results paid off. Once He felt like it was It, He finally traced the edges with a darker pencil, finally giving it a construction. Finished the work only when He'd added colour within the confines of her figure.

Taehyung wondered how old she could be but felt certain she was younger—Cleo's age—or of his age. His body was overwhelmed by tingles at the simple thought of her. Only God knows how it would be if he was actually in the same class as her, just a few classrooms down the same floor where she was sitting next to her friend, following up with the lesson.

She'd gathered the hair that got into her face and held it behind with a hair clip. One leg was across the other one and she was sitting up straight with her hand one hand under her chin and the other hovering over her notebook to take notes. Hanging by her chair was her backpack and her sweater.

She looked so unbothered at that moment but that was just because she'd already stalked his profile in the morning before school and seen that he shared on his stories a song he'd been listening to lately.

Her attention span was broken when the bell rang signaling the end of the first hour of the day. As the teacher gathered their stuff to leave, she quickly grabbed her phone and excused herself to the bathroom.

The hallway was almost empty, only teachers and students who were probably in her same situation were there. Unlike the temperature in her classroom, the hall was a bit cold and once the freshness hit her exposed lower belly and arms, a chill ran down her spine and spurred her to walk faster to the bathroom and go to class.

Although summer still hadn't ended according to science, everywhere felt like late autumn already.

She'd be walking along that hallway at the end of the following hour during break time between Cleo, Nick and James heading downstairs to the bar with a wide smile across her face since the boys only knew to make her be so.

Right when they turned the corner and went down the stairs, Adrielle and Jimin came up with a few packs of food. Taehyung and Jungkook had just exited their classroom and were hanging out by the windows. They soon were joined by Avyanna who'd gone to the bathroom.

Taehyung had mentally slapped himself before during class because he couldn't focus. 'You don't even know her!' he yelled in his mind so he was a bit glad that he hadn't thought about her till break time only for his celebration to be cut short the moment she appeared on the floor, walking with Cleo and two very familiar male faces.

The group stopped a window away from his position next to another guy, he'd already seen but whose name he didn't know. Immediately the conversation he was having with his friends seized making sense, sounding like muffled gibberish as he let his eyes linger on her figure. She leaned against the windowsill, resting on her arm while eating her croissant.

She'd taken her sweater off and was now in a tank top that stopped right above her belly button. This allowed him to notice how good she looked in those low-rise pants. Mentally sighed in exhaustion, convinced that she couldn't get any prettier but she proved his beliefs wrong.

Her beauty had once again stunned him unconscious. He bit on his sandwich... robotically. Tried to not come obvious with the staring... robotically. Pretended to listen to his friends... robotically. If only she knew she had all this power above his sense of reasoning. If only she knew how wide his pupils grew when she smiled, how the width allowed him to sip in everything that defined the smile. The way her eyes seemed to smile before her lips. The way her cheeks swelled up, with a little dimple appearing right in the middle of them.

Never had he analysed something so well.

That moment was the only moment he was fully focused on something within the confines of the school that day. He couldn't deny it. While his friends were gisting, Jungkook noticed how dazed he looked and followed his eyes only to land on Daphne. He scrunched his face, a little confused, since the face was new but immediately sighted Cleo, Nick, James and Asher.

He went back to Taehyung and saw him taking a bite from his sandwich with his eyes transfixed on the girl. Jungkook wasn't imagining all this because he saw how Taehyung's eyes followed the girl to her class once the bell rang signalling the end of break time.

Only when she was out of sight that his friend seem to have come back to reality, blinking to probably water his dry eyes. Jungkook simply smirked. S'been so long since his friend had ogled at a girl like that.

He had to know who she was. What was the name of the girl who'd captured Taehyung's attention so badly?

"Let's go in. The teacher's here," Adrielle announced.

"I don't even know how possible it would be to work on a school project with these two clowns," Daphne laughed, slamming her hands on Nick and James' desks. They immediately understood where she was going and, like clones, they smirked and high-fived each other.

"It's going to be fun, don't worry," Cleo assured. "Too fun it's not going to be serious," Daphne insisted, "Y'all are going simply drop the work on Asher and me," her last comment gained dramatic offended gasps from the three.

"Take it back. Right! Now!" Nick feigned a crybaby voice, exaggeratedly pouting to come off as offended when he really didn't give a fuck and also agreed with Daphne's statement. The other two, Cleo and James kept the act up: "This is injustice!"

"How dare you think so little of us..." James whined, "...and be so right," they all laughed as Daphne smacked his shoulder trying to conceal her laughs and failing.

"No, guys, I'm being for real right now," Nick and James whistled still not getting the message. She simply rolled her eyes, "Okay. First time getting to know me. Hi, I'm Daphne and I'm pretty serious when it comes to school. You two goofballs get it now?" now the boys rolled their eyes, "Yes, yes. We get it. Just joking around, have some fun Daph," Nick playfully kicked her foot, gaining the umpteenth eye roll from her.

"Okay, what do you want us to do?" James questioned, seeing that Nick's words didn't convince her although his tone was so different, "I don't know... be serious? Stop joking around and looking at me like I'm a psycho because I care about my grades?" the boys finally became serious, noticing that her tone had turned into a different direction.

"Okay, okay. We're done playing around. We can meet up like, uh... at the library like, I don't know, uh, tomorrow or next?" James replied. A little silence ran through and while the teacher got into the class the only reply they got from her was another eye roll.

"Don't be too harsh on them," Cleo whispered as they got to their desks. Daphne snapped her head in her direction with a baffled expression on her face. "You know the sole reason we're even doing this with them is because we're friends? Cleo, why are even saying this? My grades are like a major way I can lift my self-esteem. Sorry, I care about them and decided to scold those kids because, don't lie, they're not going to lift a pinky, a freaking pinky, in this project," Cleo smiled, trying to ease the stress that was visibly taking over her friend but their conversation was quickly cut off as the teacher started their lesson.

Soon, the second break-time arrived and they were all by the same window talking about the project to make Daphne happy. "If y'all don't like the library, we can work at mine," James suggested, looking at Daphne for some sort of confirmation. She was in the same spot as before, with arms and legs crossed, looking as serious as she was. Before she could make a decision another voice spoke: "Hey yo! How y'all doing?" they exclaimed from behind her.

She couldn't catch the face before they started shaking hands with the boys, Cleo included. Only once they were done with that could she recognise the face: Jungkook, Cleo's supposed crush.

"Nice to meet you. I'm Jungkook," he extended his hand for a shake, "Daphne. Nice to meet you too," she smiled, tilting her head to the side. "You new here, ain't you?" and she nodded, proceeding to talk about when she came and what class she went to.

"She's my childhood bestie," Cleo sang from beside him. In the meantime, the boys excused themselves to the vending machines. "Her grandparents live here. Always did," she excitedly continued before changing topics and asking him about his holidays, "Fine, nothing new. Same place, same people..."

"But different experiences, no?" Daphne asked as Jungkook placed himself between the girls, leaning on the windowsill, "Yeah, kinda. Fun experiences. We played basketball against some town boys and busted their asses. They sucked so hard," he spoke, specifically to Cleo as she complimented him.

While the two talked with each other, Daphne's mind immediately flew somewhere else. 'If Jungkook was there, he's got to be here too' she thought, looking around herself without being obvious but honestly failed because the best at doing things in hidden and noticing others do so was Jungkook who could simultaneously talk to Cleo and check Daphne out without raising suspicions. This time around though, he didn't notice her wandering eyes and even if he did, he couldn't go to the conclusion that she was looking for his friend.

He mentally nodded, agreeing with his friend's obsession with the girl. She was all that, not a surprise Taehyung was stunned, but he still liked to investigate, but soon his investigation was cut short when the bell rang and he had to run off to the bathroom before the next class. Daphne and Cleo greeted him before heading to their own classroom. Right when they went in, Taehyung came out of his, heading to the bathroom.

His presence was immediately caught by Jungkook who slowed down to wait for him. When Taehyung caught up, Jungkook didn't mention anything about Daphne, about how he knew Taehyung was interested. Didn't mention he'd just had a full conversation with her. Simply threw his arm across his friend's shoulders and proceeded to the bathrooms with him.

—Now playing: Melting by Kali Uchis ✫

The pen spun between his fingers on one hand so effortlessly—mastered art—while the other one held his head by the cheek, boredom overcoming him. The corner of the pages in front of him was filled with doodles.

Daphne had clouded his mind and he rather thought about her or thought about how he shouldn't be thinking about her—but by doing that he was still thinking about her. Good for him that Jungkook didn't tell him about what he did during the second break time.

Taehyung spent the last thirty minutes of the last class of the day thinking and imagining how she'd look in class, wondering if she took school seriously, was an average type of student or just didn't care. Wondered how she looked during class, if she followed the lesson or minded her business, maybe reading the book from that morning. She was probably taking notes, head slightly bent, her fluffy curtain bangs crowning her pretty face. Her posture would still have that calming effect it has. Maybe when bored she plays with her pen like him in that moment or draws doodles in the corners of her notebook. In all this, she'd be silent. Her voice—just like her name—was a mystery to him, giving him space to imagine the sound of it. Was it high-pitched? Normal with nothing special? Had a soothing feeling to it? Was it very feminine with a little rasp to it or did she have a versatile type of voice that changed according to the situation, having a deeper tone when she softly laughed or comforted somehow and having a higher tone when she talked to strangers to come off as nice?

Anyone looking at him from the outside would think he was focused. They'd guess correctly but would fail if they thought he was listening to the words slipping out of his teacher's mouth.

A little sparkle of joy overwhelmed his insides as he remembered he'd be catching the bus even on his way back home so he'd get the chance to admire her again with his pupils getting wider at her beauty. Subsequently, he double-tapped on his phone to check the time. Cheered up when he saw that less than ten minutes were left before he'd get the chance to lay eyes on her again.

He stretched out a bit, noticing how focused Adrielle was, pen spinning on the paper to take notes. Checked his own notebook to find the page mostly filled with doodles and had only two sensible sentences. Decided to lay his head on his arms against the desk and soon his mind took off, going to places that all orbited around Daphne.

Her figure in his mind was well-defined, not hazy or blurry. Just nameless and voiceless. A nameless and voiceless beauty. The more he indulged in thinking about her, the more the thought of not doing so faded away, letting himself gaily fall into the lovely world of fantasy.

Daphne in his head seemed to be doing everything in slow motion. When she was on the bus as she pushed her hair back, it'd move in slow motion. Turning the pages was in slow motion. Her change of position was in slow motion giving him the time to cherish her beauty, all the minor things that define her figure and her whole existence. The more he thought about it, the more he wanted to know to prove his guesses right.

"Tae, get ready," Adrielle nudged his side and whispered. He came back to reality and slowly started packing up his things—Avyanna, Jimin and Jungkook already did some time ago.

Before he could finish, the bell rang. His friends immediately got up, indirectly making Taehyung realize how out of this world he was earlier. He was almost baffled since the last time he'd checked the time felt like seconds ago.

"Come on, hurry!" Jimin spurred, waiting for him while the rest proceeded out of the classroom. Not wanting his friend to wait any longer, Taehyung pushed his phone into his pocket and hurried up, trying to zip his backpack close in a slapdash manner. He followed Jimin as they left the classroom but everything seemed to slow down when the same couple of girls from that morning walked past his classroom.

Daphne didn't look in his direction, too engrossed in whatever Cleo was showing her on her phone but Taehyung found everything so beautiful, his eyes followed their movements without missing a bit. Jimin didn't notice this as he typed away at his phone, messily walking forward but also slowing down, waiting for Taehyung to catch up with him.

There she was, walking in front of him, arms entangled with her friend's. Her hair was still partly held by the clip from earlier. She'd put her sweater back on, headphones back around her neck.

The students were making a lot of noise so Taehyung couldn't hear how she sounded while she wholeheartedly laughed with her friend, he just unconsciously smiled with her, biting his lip when he realized it.

Once they were out, he saw them join Nick, James and the other familiar guy whose name he couldn't remember. They walked down the hill just like he did with his friends, the only difference was that she was focused on the conversation they were having—whatever his friends were talking about was unimportant whenever Daphne was present.

His attention was broken when he noticed they wouldn't take the bus but proceeded to town on foot. They probably had other plans. His was ruined: he wouldn't get to admire her today but there's always tomorrow.

Letting her proceed, he finally turned to his friends as they stopped at the terminal to talk for a bit before Avyanna and Jungkook left and he got on the bus along with Jimin and Adrielle.

What a day. What a beautiful day.
