Odysseus turned to Penelope, surprised. Her eyes gleamed like amber under the sun. If not for her viperine fury, it would’ve looked beautiful.

“Talk?”

“For twenty years I have stayed silent for them. Please let me speak. This one time.” Just once, to try and tip the scales in their favor. Then she would become invisible again behind the walls of the palace.

Odysseus reflected for a second and nodded.

Penelope stood and walked to the crowd; she let her veil float away from her face. The people fell silent.

“People of Ithaca.” A faint murmur raised between the crowd but it fainted as Odysseus lifted his hand to silence them. The fathers and mothers of the principal families scoffed in disgust.

“For three years I have welcomed your sons as guests in the king’s house, as he would have had me do it. For three years I have served them as guests and fed them from the king’s table, because what is a king if he won’t take care of his people? But your sons have shown no respect for these kind-hearted attentions. Instead, they feasted recklessly as if his house was for them to take. In that, they figured they were defying the king himself. And yet I patiently gave away what was not mine to give. For three years your sons have done what they wanted without a word of reprimand from their elders. But now they have crossed a line. You have let them roam astray. And keeping them from your loving guidance, you have caused them the worst of evils.”

The crowd moved, restless. What did she mean?

“King Odysseus and the best men of Cephalonia left their families to fight for Greece. With great pains, they kept war far from our shores so we could keep our peaceful lives all these years. This land has borne new children and even grandchildren thanks to these efforts. Now your king has returned bringing fame to Ithaca by his mighty hand. And what has been his welcoming?” She put her hands on the cart, “His son, dead by the hand of the sons of Ithaca. With a spear they took the life of the heir to the throne of Odysseus’ and Laertes’ lineage”. She let her words echo in the utter silence of the square.”Prince Telemachus never neglected his duties to you; I saw to it myself. Yet his blood has been spilled on the floor like the wine that drops from inebriated hands ”. Her lips curved in disgust.

There were gasps and whimpers. Some stared at the bulk in disbelief.

“Shame on you who have witnessed this madness for so long and yet have kept your arms crossed and your mouths shut! Shame on your sons who knew no decency! Shame on you, fathers, who have raised beasts not men! Because of your cruelty, a joyous day of reunion between a father and a son has been wrecked. And a day of celebration for all the city has turned into a funeral.

Shame on whoever dares to raise their hand against Odysseus son of Laertes, the rightful king of Ithaca!”
