As someone with phobias (like thalassophobia, not homophobia) the way able-minded people treat phobias is abhorrent.

Phobias should be regarded as actual disorders and disabilities, and not just "they don't like this" or "they are just so scared of these! It's so funny!" or "overcome your fears" or "just get over it" or "it's just this!"

Like Ik... it's irrational... that's what defines a phobia or a traumatic experience can be the cause.

People hear me say "I have a phobia of needles/Trypanophobia." And think it's appropriate to say stuff like, "Oh, but it doesn't hurt." or "You'll get used to it."

I'm almost 20 and have been doing blood test my whole life. I'm already "used to it." And, it does really hurt. I am traumatized, not uninformed or inexperienced.

And, when my mom, thank god, defends me, they're all like, "Oh... you'll get over your fears one day."

Like, I need a therapist for that, and even then, I get to decide how to handle my own conditions. I don't want exposure therapy. I want support and comfort. I want my dad to stop calling me dramatic and a crybaby. I want BOTH of my parents to defend me when people try to put down my disabilities.

Also, don't trigger people's phobias on purpose. That's extremely ableist, whether the person has trauma or not. Triggering it can Cause trauma and is extremely distressing. I know it's not rational. You don't have to remind me.
