As someone who has playlists for all of their OCs, I just had to hop in on this. I’ve said this before, but Dead Bird fits Kunio so well that it might as well have been written about him. There isn’t a single line in this song that doesn’t feel like something he would say or do:

And Starless Night perfectly captures how Kunio feels when he starts to accept being in love with Nathaniel:

As for Nathaniel, Cough It Out but The Front Bottoms. I think it captures how much he regrets letting his relationship with Theo define so much of his life, and how even after everything Theo did, he can’t bring himself to hate him, especially the bridge. ‘I don’t care if you’re not sorry, I forgive you, and with or without your support I will continue’. THAT’S HIM TO A T.

And I just had to include I’m Glad You’re Evil Too. This, in my mind, is Nathaniel learning that it feels good to be selfish, to put his own wants and needs first, and enjoy his relationship with Kunio without Theo there to ruin things for him:

For Ariel, first of all, I went with Out Of Control. Might seem like an odd choice, but I think it captures her feelings of having to hide her true self, and only allowing a select few people to know her name or her face:

And I couldn’t not include the song from the PV that inspired Night Of The Blue Moon. Miraculous Ladybug was originally supposed to be a magical girl show for an older teen/adult audience, and deal with themes such as politics and corruption, but it ended up becoming a kids show, and judging by the mountain of salty Miraculous Ladybug reviews on this site, a bad one. So I decided to write my very own magical girl book for an older teen/adult audience, featuring police corruption as a major plot point:

1.) How do you imagine yourself, let’s say, fifteen years older?

Fifteen years from now, I’ll probably be married to Nathaniel, and living in a Victorian house near the mountains. Nathaniel’s dream home is a Victorian cottage, and I want to live in a mountain town so I can go hiking. Maybe we’ll have a couple of kids, too, and definitely some crows. Nathaniel is dead set on having kids, and I am too. I want a son, but if Nathaniel ever wants a daughter, I’d be ok with us adopting a girl as well.

2.) Something you can’t live without?

The Sojobo and Minamoto No Yoshitsune figures that my granddad made for me. If anything ever happened to them, it would fucking destroy me. I have very little left of my granddad’s pottery (No thanks to my bitch birth-giver, Nozomi), and I want to protect it at all costs

3.) Favorite gem?

I know fuck all about gems aside from the basics. Uh, let’s see…I like red, and rubies are red, so, rubies, I guess.

Thanks for the tag! I’m warning you now, these explanations will be lengthy. I put careful thought into all of my characters’ names, and I’m going to infodump the hell out of them now. *Ahem* Name Nerd Power, Activate!

(Benji is indeed BB, that boy deserves the world. And so does Tenshi. I want to read Tenshi’s story please write it and thank you in advance ^_^)

I know I’ve mentioned this before, but Kunio is named for Kunio Yanagita, a Japanese folklorist best known for the Tōno Monogatari, a compilation of folk tales and local legends from the city of Tōno, most of which feature some species of yokai. I took inspiration from the Tōno Monogatari to build some of the mythological elements of the story, and y’all know that Kunio is a mythology nerd, especially when it comes to tengu. As for the name itself, Kunio, like most Japanese names, can have a lot of different meanings depending on the kanji used, but I imagine that Kunio’s name would be written with the same kanji as his namesake, that being: 國男 (Kuni, meaning country or kingdom, and ō, meaning man, or male). As for Kunio’s surname, Yoshioka, the most common kanji combination for that surname is 吉岡 (Yoshi = Good, fortunate and oka = hill, knoll), so I went with that. This surname was chosen for cruel irony’s sake; It is pretty ironic for someone who had such a terrible childhood to have a name meaning good or fortunate. (I also debated naming Kunio Sachio, meaning lucky/fortunate man, but I thought that that would’ve been a bit too on the nose…)

Nathaniel is a Hebrew name which can be roughly translated as, ‘gift of God’, in keeping with his angelic motif, and Kunio’s feelings of being given Nathaniel as an apology from the universe for his shitty childhood. His middle name, Azrael, is from the angel of death in Abrahamic mythology, and this was chosen due to Kunio feeling as if his old human self truly died the moment he met Nathaniel. Nathaniel’s surname, Bythesea, is a rare old English surname from Somerset which is on the verge of extinction (That meaning that there are very few living people who have it). Nathaniel was born in Somerset, and I thought that giving him a rare surname would emphasise how alone he is in the world, and how he has no living relatives who want him in their lives.

Ariel is a moon of the planet Uranus, who, in Greek Mythology, is the father of the titans. Ariel gets her powers from Phoebe, one of Uranus’ daughters, and Phoebe is the titan of prophecy, intellect, and the moon. Her middle name, Selene, comes from the goddess of the moon, who is also the daughter of Theia, the titan that her partner, Solana gets her powers from. Ariel’s surname, Gianapoulou, is the feminine form of Gianapoulous, meaning ‘child of Giannis’. Giannis can be roughly translated as ‘god is gracious’, in reference to Ariel’s many meetings and dealings with the Greek gods. She has met Hades, Hecate, and Thanatos, and I have plans for her to meet more of the Olympian pantheon, as well as some more of the titans.

Solana’s name means ‘sunshine’ and it was chosen to reflect Solana’s sun motif, and act as a parallel to Ariel’s moon motif. She also gets her powers from Theia, the titan of radiance, and Theia is the mother of Helios, the god of the sun. Her middle name, Leto, comes from the goddess of motherhood and modesty, who is also one of Phoebe’s daughters. Bellamy is a surname of French origin meaning ‘beautiful friend’, which suits her to a T. Solana is very conventionally attractive, and she’s also one of the nicest girls you’ll ever meet…Provided that you don’t lay a finger on Ariel.

So obviously “Hart” and “Heart” having a double meaning, but a “hart” is also the name of a male deer in England, and I see Peter as a handsome young buck. A leader of his pack, looks gentle enough, but will absolutely gore you with his antlers if you get too close.

And the name Peter? Brain said: “What’s a good name that Benjamin can yell in a British accent? Peter. That’ll do.” Also lots of pirates with names consisting of “Pete” (though Peter hates this nickname)

Benjamin Bartholomew

(If anyone is named Benjamin Matthias Bartholomew, I apologize in advance for what I’m about to say)

I basically asked my brain: “Pick the most pompous, pretentious, princely sounding name you can think of.” And this is what it came up with. Also his initials are BB, and he is, indeed, BB ✨

Thanks for the tag! I’m bringing Ariel into this, and first off, some quotes from the first draft that describe her appearance, both as her regular self and as her magical girl self, Blue Moon:

Her black hair was now as white as the full moon, and was arranged in an elegant braided bun, with wavy bangs framing her face.

She had perfectly pale, unblemished skin, like a Victorian doll, and her eyes were the colour of a summer night; blue, with twinkling flecks of silver, like there were literal stars in her eyes.

She was lean, but muscular, like a ballerina, and her very tight tights highlighted the muscle in her legs. 

As for things I haven’t explicitly described about her yet, but might do in a future draft:

Ariel has near-constant bags under her eyes due to working late almost every night. She’s very much a workaholic, and everyone knows it

She has a blue moon tattoo on her left shoulder
