Time is the great band. Beginnings bleed into endings, bleed into beginnings. This is the nature of all things. What dies nurtures the soil, and life rises out of its black foam, and what falls upon it is consumed in turn to nurture what comes next. Out of the muck from the earliest days until the hammer blow of extinction sent it back, only to crawl once again forward— ever forward. Defiant to the cyclical ends that are so numerous. Death. Plague. Conflict.

How many times were our ancestors reduced, resigned back to primitive form? How many generations of potential obliterated by so many fearsome ends, each form cut away by that cold scythe that dictates what lives and what dies? Ninety-nine percent of all life forms upon the Earth have withered and died. A cathedral of the extinct is the greatest achievement of this living world, not the things it has produced that breath and fight and breed, no— it’s mightiest haul is all the bones, all the skeletal remnants tucked away in her soils. The chorus of life is but a whisper to the requiem that follows, millions upon millions of voices strong.

When my people arose it seemed that we were the inheritors of a mighty mantle. An impossible age was upon us. Immortal, invincible— the apotheosis of industries and arts that our minds had summoned from purest imagination to hardest realities. Continents became little more than gardens for us to shape, the weather and its rebellious storms tamed with simple amusement until every day was pleasant and demure to our liking. We forged metal, flesh. Even light became just another palette to the artist and the engineer in all the shapes of our divine whim. We kissed other worlds until the stars in the night sky sang with the influence we wrought. Those first travelers, machines as they may be— they were the heralds of our coming upon the Galaxy..

And then came the loss. The disease that was upon us then was slow and ancient already, a stilling sickness that did not rot flesh or weaken bone; no, no, this silent dredge did nothing more but dull our minds, weaken our wills. Immortality brought weakness, endless resources stifled creativity. Our art, majestic and vast and mighty as it was, and it was mighty!— all of it blended, meshed. We were all doing the same in our countless, same-same-same heavens.

That was not what killed us, no, but it did weaken us just enough. Cracks in the walls from tenacious vines, hungry mold. Just waiting for the right push.

The Adversary came. Our Nemesis. And it was relentless. Merciless. It was the face of annihilation. An out-of-context event that turned so much divinity and so much power into ash, into the painfully folly that was. We crashed, we burned. We broke. So many beautiful fresco shards immolated. The continents we had tended melted away into slag, the storms we had tamed became raging gales that stripped the soil and stone from so many surfaces until all that was left was obliteration. They scoured all that we had touched. Like God erasing our hubris from his creation.

We ran. What else was there to do?

We vanished into the dark. Burning and burying all that was left behind, all that might incriminate the direction of our exodus. Some fled to a distant galaxy, believing this affliction was here and here only, amongst familiar stars. Others buried themselves in obscure, esoteric ritual and mindsets, hoping to vanish into regressive pasts that might unfold. Legions of dreamers and acolytes wove wonderful delusions for themselves, for the minds that remained, bodiless and hidden in tiny alcoves scattered. Others still went out into the Maw, believing they could reason with our oncoming extinction. Their questions were all silenced. One by one.

In our flight we found the ruins. The tombs and abandoned projects, the memories; all of it came with the realization of what had come before. The endless cycles of time realized in fragments, in pieces. Life arose, mind igniting in the sludge and the cold and the harshness, the inevitable ascension. And then the hurried, black silence that was total and uncompromising. Snuffing out civilizations in a methodical diminishing. One by one. Until nothing remained but the silence. When we found the remnants of our distant, forgotten forebears, and the telltale signs of their own inescapable fates, we had no time to mourn. The Adversary was already upon us.

It still is. We are at our Cradle now, though it is unlike to be where we truly originate from. It is all that remains. Our enemy walks the surface and soon will be amongst here, down beneath. Finishing their ultimate work. We do not why. Never will we know.

In our final hour, in our last struggle, we leave this record for you. These few, precious gifts.

May the cycle end with you.

Or let your end be sudden and complete.

My theories on Beast Boy's powers

So, here's the thing. If you've been on my blog for even half a second, you know that I'm a huge fan of Beast Boy and don't take slander against him from anybody. But.

I mean.

This guy is weirrrrrd.

Sure he can change into animals, but how exactly? What would this look like in the real world? Can we pinpoint what exactly makes him transform? Well I'm here to definitively answer none of those questions. I'm just a person with way too much time on my hands and an annoyingly persistent urge to ask, "why?"

We know from past explanations of Gar's backstory that he was bitten by a green monkey and contracted a rare tropical disease from the creature. We can get a little more background from Geoff Johns' run on the Teen Titans:

My Theories On Beast Boy's Powers

The monkey has a name now! Sort of. This is the green-capped mangabey, scientific name Cercocebus viridis, as Doctor Register and Marie Logan indicate. Cercocebus is a genus of Old world monkeys, some of whom live in West Africa. Funnily enough, there is an actual African green monkey, Chlorocebus Aethiops, although it is not as green as the mangabey that bit Gar.

We know that chimps can transfer diseases to humans, as was the case for HIV making the leap from primate to human. Sakutia is also declared to be a virus:

My Theories On Beast Boy's Powers

Yes, if you didn't know already, Gar is a natural blonde! Now you know.

So sakutia being able to be transmitted from monkey to human is consistent. I imagine that sakutia is also similar to rabies in that it can be transmitted through bites and saliva. However, humans infected with rabies take about a few months to start showing symptoms. We saw that in the short time it took for Marie to pick up Gar and run into the research center, he was already showing symptoms. However, we do know that some diseases can take less than 24 to 48 hours to start showing symptoms. In this case, the virus behaved much like snake venom and started to show what could look like signs of an infection.

Diseases that originate from animal organisms but can be passed on to humans are called zoonotic diseases, and include things such as rabies, some strands of malaria, and Lyme disease (warning: unpleasant images of ticks). While I am using rabies as a real-world virus to base sakutia off of, it is important to remember that the infected usually die within a week of contraction. This is not the case for the mangabey, as Doctor Register says that it is the "key to universal immunity."

So, we've established what sakutia is, its carrier, and how it can be transmitted to humans. Now we have to look at what exactly Gar was treated with that "cured" him of the virus. I say "cured" because depending on the author, it seems that Gar either still has the virus in his system, or it faded away. In his original 1964 origin story, Mark Logan used a serum and an energy ray of some sort to turn Gar into a green monkey so its immune system could fight off the virus, as only the green monkeys were able to survive infection.

My Theories On Beast Boy's Powers

Also, in his first origin story, Marie states that "the boy has been sick for days," while in Geoff Johns' rewrite, it took less than 30 minutes for Gar to start showing symptoms. Both contradict each other in some way, so let's assume that the Cercocebus viridis bit Gar, he started showing symptoms of sakutia as fast as snake venom would, and his father gave him a serum that turned him into the monkey for 24-48 hours so his new immune system could fight off the virus, after which he returned to normal albeit stained green everywhere.

This is where we hit our first roadblock. What did that serum do? Obviously, it turned him into the monkey, but how? If everything up until this point has been scientifically explained, then it's safe to say that we need to find a way to do the same with the serum. So here's when I start to do a little bit of mental gymnastics.

As he is preparing the serum, Mark says that "our DNA differs by only 1.6% from the common chimp. If we complete our research, and create a link - a missing link from animal to man - then we can save Gar's life." We also see Doctor Rovin explain that "the virus seems to latch on to its host and enable that host to unlock their own DNA...you were altering yourself at the very base level. Unlocking your DNA strands and reconfiguring them with a thought, apparently breaking down your body and rebuilding it in less than a second."

Here I'm going to throw something at the wall and see if it sticks. I think that the "serum" that Mark gave his son was a sample of the genetic code of the green monkey. Now, hear me out. We know that genes from some animals can be expressed in others. We can probably assume that sakutia kills its host by breaking down their DNA, as Rovin explained. So, what if Gar was injected with the DNA of the green monkey, whose genetic code interacted with the virus attached to Gar's DNA? And what if the virus' ability to break down genetic material is what caused the transformation into the green monkey, due to the presence of its DNA in Gar's system? And when the virus left his body, it left his DNA in a state where it could be broken down and rearranged to match the genetic code of a different animal.

Now, this is all well and good, but there's a problem. Say we assume my above hypothesis to be true. If so, then why can Gar turn into other animals if he was only injected with DNA from the green monkey? This is a bit more difficult to answer, and I don't have a good theory on why he can do this (yet). My running theory is that he taps into the Red while rearranging his genetic material, and the Red does the rest of the pricess for him. I'm aware that this is kind of cheating, but for now it's a placeholder. Him tapping into a mystical morphogenic field can also explain the glaring violation of physics that comes with Gar's powers.

How can he go from a bird that weighs practically nothing, to a blue whale with enough weight to flatten a city block? Where did all that mass come from? Sure, humans can lose and gain weight, but how does he go from something that weighs nothing to something worthy of yo mama jokes? Shouldn't that, like, create a black hole or something?

To that last question, I say, "I'm a biologist, not an astronomer."

This is the one thing that bothers me the most about Gar's powers. He just blatantly violates the law of conservation of mass and the very fabric of the universe itself like it's a Tuesday. I would be tempted to say it might have something to do with quantum physics or dark matter or other words that make me sound smart but I have no idea how those work.

But let's get to something I do know: what can Gar turn into? What constitutes an animal?

Well, the organisms of the Animalia kingdom have a few characterstics in common. They are mobile eukaryotic heterotrophs whose cells lack a cell wall. In other words, a multicellular organism that cannot produce its own food and must seek out outside sources to gain energy. This eliminates plants and fungi from the competition, but also establishes that Gar can really only transform into multicellular organisms. No bacteria or viruses, as viruses are not living things and bacteria are too simple for him to consider since they are prokaryotes, or single-celled organisms.

So yes, theoretically Gar could turn into a Kryptonian and gain all the powers of Superman, but should he? Probably not, and that's not even considering the fact that Kal has had his whole life to train and experiment with his powers. Gar would likely become too overwhelmed with the sights and smells and sounds.

But could he turn into Godzilla? Absolutely!

My Theories On Beast Boy's Powers

Can he turn into a giant lion? Yes, he can!

My Theories On Beast Boy's Powers

Can he turn into an anthropomorphic tiger that rivals Tawky Tawny in ridiculousness? Sure!

My Theories On Beast Boy's Powers

Can he turn into a giant fire-breathing dragon? You bet.

My Theories On Beast Boy's Powers

How about a horrifying Lovecraftian eldritch abomination? Hell yeah.

My Theories On Beast Boy's Powers

How about a vicious werebeast? Not even close to being a problem.

My Theories On Beast Boy's Powers

Can he turn into a giant rat thing that manhandles the Titans like they're ragdolls? Of course.

My Theories On Beast Boy's Powers

The only thing limiting his transformations is his imagination (and his poor self-esteem, but you get the point).

Anyway, these are all just theories that I've had about Gar's powers, and I hope that I've given you something to think about or research. If you have your own theories, I'd love to hear them! It's always fun to speculate how superpowers would work in real life where science is dominant and they have to abide by the laws of physics.

Mostly.

"Raven is just Gar's eye candy girlfriend"

"Raven Is Just Gar's Eye Candy Girlfriend"

Gosh, I can't believe how DC reduced Raven to mere eye candy.

"Raven Is Just Gar's Eye Candy Girlfriend"

Wow, isn't she such a satellite character who has done nothing in team comics and in her own solos?

What's that, you say? She's been historically characterized as an empathic pacifist with a centralized support role due to that nature? Surely, you jest!

I can't believe DC would allow such a thing!

Raven isn't the one who ended the relationship.

Bold statement, I know, but I think I've got a good case here.

It's pretty well known that Garrae is a thing in the comics (and if anyone tries to say they only became a thing because of the TV show, I will drop kick your ass into the sun), but those who don't read the comics as religiously as I do probably won't know that they got together in issue #30 and then we learned that they broke up in issue #34.

It's a time skip thing, don't worry too much about. They were together for about a year before they fell out.

It always bothered me that Geoff Johns never said why they broke up. I had assumed that it was Raven who ended the relationship because she seems more likely to do so than Gar, but I'm not so sure now.

In this analysis I will be primarily focusing on the Johns (2003-2007) and Krul (2010-2011) era of Teen Titans, as they were the two most prolific Garrae writers. If you want to accept the Winick era of Titans in which a lot of Garrae stuff was retconned and Raven was a particularly nasty bitch to Gar, then you should also accept the fact that Winick tried to retcon Nightwing into not loving Starfire. 2008 era Titans was a bad time for everyone involved. Let's agree that that part of canon sucked ass and move on.

Here we have a little bit of why Gar left the team when he and Raven broke up, as "seen" by Cyborg when he was in a coma for a year.

Raven Isn't The One Who Ended The Relationship.

His self-confidence at this point is pretty shattered. He's leaving after a year of being the leader of the Teen Titans, during a time in which they went through 20 members in a year. Everyone was at each others throats, and some kids were only in it for the fame that being a Titan would give them. Raven was the only member of the original Johns era lineup to stay on the team during this time.

"Tim's finally back. He'll be able to handle this" sounds to me like Gar didn't know how to handle a rowdy group of teenagers and is gladly giving over leadership to someone he thinks would do a better job than he had.

Raven Isn't The One Who Ended The Relationship.

Plus a little bit of projecting. Gar didn't have a team of Titans that he could trust either. One of their members turned out to be a traitor, although he didn't know that at the time. There even was one former member who kept on trying to flirt with Raven behind Gar's back, and sometimes even while he was nearby.

The most important lines of dialogue actually comes from Raven, speaking to a comatose Cyborg.

Raven Isn't The One Who Ended The Relationship.
Raven Isn't The One Who Ended The Relationship.

Why would Raven say that both Gar and the rest of the team think she is leaving because of Gar if she was the one who ended their relationship? Something doesn't add up.

Raven Isn't The One Who Ended The Relationship.
Raven Isn't The One Who Ended The Relationship.
Raven Isn't The One Who Ended The Relationship.

I doubt Raven would be openly wanting to spend time with and showing this much concern for Gar's wellbeing if she ended it. Looks to me like Gar is trying to avoid conversations about both them as a couple and encounters in general.

Finally, my smoking gun comes in the form of Krul's era of Teen Titans. I generally consider Krul's run to be a true spiritual successor to Johns' run, unlike all the other writers who came after Johns. Krul's run was the last few issues that this particular volume of Teen Titans ran for before Flashpoint fucked everything up.

Raven Isn't The One Who Ended The Relationship.

Thus, I leave you with one final question.

What would she have to forgive him for?

Jason Todd x reader

Reader: Female

Warnings: Pet death (dog), angst, sad reader, my writing cause that’s a ALWAYS a warning

Why I wrote this: Because I had to put my dog down on Saturday 25 January 2020

Blue Collar

Jason Peter Todd wasn’t known to be a light sleeper. In fact if he did wake up early it was only because he’d had a nightmare but you would always be there to calm him down and reassure him that everything’s alright. You’d never wake him up early anyway as he nearly always came home late from patrol. He’d come home at 2am tonight.

Jason wasn’t awake, not fully at least, but awake enough to know that something was wrong. It was like a sixth sense. His brain kicked in making the sleep Jason was clinging to evaporte like mist. He opened his eyes to see you huddled over, back rising and falling erraticly. The sleep was still in his ears and he couldn’t hear anything which made him panic more.

Pushing the covers away he frantically pulled his way over to you and sat next to you on the bed. He saw the tears before his hearing finally kickstarted like an engine. His face turned to a frown and his heart broke at the sight of his beautiful girl crying.

“Baby? Y/n what’s wrong?” He questioned. She opened her mouth but no words came out just a choked sob. She grasped whatever she had in her hands tighter. Jason’s eyebrows furrowed until he made out what it was. A dogs collar.

“He’s gone Jay. “ She finally managed to utter out before the tears came back. Jason placed his arm around her shoulders and brought her closer to his chest as she sobbed staring at the collar through blurry eyes. “His kidneys were going when my parents took him they said he wouldn’t of lasted much longer anyway.” She sobbed again and Jason tightened his hold on her. “They said we did the right thing we ended his suffering earlier but why does it feel so wrong?”

“It’s because you loved him and he loved you. You didn’t do the wrong thing and it’s natural that you should feel like this. He’s never gone anyway he’s always going to be in your heart. You wouldn’t want him to hurt would you?” She shook your head “I know it’s hard babe but he’s in a better place now.”

“Yeah.” She muttered tears slowly stopping and her grip on his collar slowly loosening. Jason smiled at her and she smiled back, it was full of sadness and pain but it was a smile.

“I’ll always be here for you y/n I’ll make sure you get through this.”

“Thanks Jay.” She said wiping the tears from her eyes. He pecked her lips noting how salty they tasted.

“How about we go back to sleep yeah? I’m sure all that cryings probably made you feel wiped out.” She chuckled and it sounded like music to Jason’s ears. They both got back under the covers and she laid her head on his chest listening to his heartbeat as he traced random patterns on her. Eventually they fell asleep. Y/n still held onto his blue collar, she’d bought when she first got him, knowing that although her dog may not be here physically he’d always be with her in spirit.

Ok wow that was a shitty ending sorry. But I couldn’t write much more on this cause I was crying so much. The pictures below are of my dog Dougal. Love you so much pal I hope you’re having loads of fun in doggy heaven

I Need My Girl

Jason Todd x fem!reader/ (Slight) Garfield Logan x reader

Inspiration: Song: I Need My Girl by The National

Summary: The reader (Jason’s crush) pushes him out of the way to save him. The reader goes to hospital and while Jason’s and the rest of the Titans are waiting for any news Jason’s guilt eats him alive.

Warnings: One swear word, angst, fluff, first kiss as a couple, reader almost dies, Jason crying cause he’s my baby and I don’t want him to cry but I make him cry anyway and I should really make a happy thing with Jason but I just don’t ???

I Need My Girl
I Need My Girl

“Jason look out!” She shouted pushing him away mere seconds before she took the blast. Everything froze and Jason couldn’t hear himself scream but he felt it. The burning of his throat like he’d swallowed a wildfire slowly turned to coal that weighed in his stomach as he made his way to her. He fell to his knees and pulled her softly so that her head rested on his thighs. He just stared at her with blurry eyes that seemed to her blurrier. That’s the last thing he remembered before he was waiting in the hospital.

Dick, Rachel and Kori sat on the scratchy and uncomfortable hospital chairs. While Jason and Garfield paced around the waiting room.

"Guys could you please sit down you're making me more nervous." Rachel said as her head was in her hands.

"No we can't. Look I'm sorry Rach but I'm not going to sit down. I can't. I can't-" Garfield put a shaky hand through his green hair as he let out an even shakier breath. Kori stood up and made him sit down.

"Why is no one saying anything?! Jesus Y/n could be dying or dead because of me and no one-" Jason shouted

"Jason don't talk like that." Rachel muttered, eyes brimming with fresh tears.

"But it's the truth." Jason countered

"Would you two shut it." Dick said. Everyone jumped that was the first thing that Dick said since they'd been in the waiting room.

“No Dick I’m not shutting up. Y/n is one of us. If she wasn’t so fucking selfless then I would be in the hospital bed that she’s in and to be honest I’d trade places with her in a heartbeat. I’m not bothered about people dying. People die everyday but I don’t want her to die today." Jason got up and walked off. The cold air bit him but he couldn’t care less. His mind was whirling. Why him? Why did you save him? Out of all the team why would you save him? He didn’t have powers like Kori or Raven or Gar. He was a shadow to Dick. He knew he’d never be what Bruce wanted him to be. Bruce wanted him to be like Dick but he wasn’t.

I can't get my head around it

I keep feeling smaller and smaller

I need my girl

After what felt like eternity one of the nurses came.

"Excuse me are you all here for Y/n Y/l/n?" A nurse said everyone looked at her.

"Yes we are. Is anything wrong?" Kori asked. The nurse smiled warmly

"No nothing's wrong, your friend is lucky to have survived that." Garfield nervously chuckled putting his hands behind his head and resting on the back of the seat

"Yeah she is a lucky charm."

"You're free to see her now." The nurse informed them, everyone got up quickly.

"I'll go get Jason." Kori said everyone nodded as she went out the door to find him.

***********

Beep. Beep. Beep. The sound of a heart monitor was the sound that filled her ears as she woke up slowly. Y/n slowly blinked and groaned at the light. As her eyes adjusted she could make out three figures; Garfield, Dick and Rachel. Her voice was hoarse.

“Where’s Kori and Jason?”

"Kori went to find Jason. He couldn't handle it." Rachel said her chin length bon was slightly messy. Guilt filled Y/n. Y/n and Jason has always been close since she’d first joined the Titans. She’s seen sides of Jason none of them ever would. She didn't even want to think about what could've happened if she hadn't of made it. She shook her head.

“You have no idea how happy I am that you survived.” Dick spoke she chuckled slightly.

“You and I both Dicky.” They smiled at each other.

“Y/n/n." She heard a voice say barely above a whisper, the team made way for Jason as he hugged her.

"C'mon guys lets leave Jason and Y/n for awhile. Glad to see you’re better Y/n." Kori said. Everyone left but Garfield cast one last look at Y/n before Kori gave him a quick, swift kick in the shin. He let out a soft groan before leaving. Jason and Y/n laughed. They both nodded in thanks. She returned the gesture before walking out.

"I'm guessing the team have already said how glad they are to have you back." Jason said

"Yeah." There was a silence. "Rachel told me how you couldn't handle it." Her voice was sympathetic. Jason chuckled as a few tears streamed down his face. Y/n laid a hand on his cheek and he nuzzled into it.

"I am sorry you know. I thought I'd be stronger but when the doctors weren't telling us anything it hit me like a truck that I might be losing my best friend and when I thought I'd lost you. You have no idea how scared I was when I thought I would never be able to tell you how much I-" Jason cut himself off before he went any further. He stuffed his hands in his jean pockets and broke eye contact. Y/n raised a questionable eyebrow but said nothing.

“Now you know how I feel when you get hurt.” Jason chuckled “besides it’s gonna have to take a lot more than that to finish me off. I am a Titan after all.”

"To right you are. No wonder your nickname’s lucky, you've always been lucky you know ever since you came into my life I feel like it’s become a better place.”

“I know Jay.” The air was filled with a comfortable silence except for the beeping.

“Jason.” He hummed “what were you going to say before you cut yourself off?” Jason looked like he’d just been caught doing something he shouldn’t of been doing.

“You know the usual sappy stuff when you nearly lose someone.” He said taking his hands out of his pockets and using one to rub the back of his neck.

“So say it.”

“Huh?”

“Say the sappy stuff that people say when they nearly lose someone.” There was a mischievous glint in her eye and Jason chuckled.

“Fine. Y/n Y/l/n I couldn’t imagine my life without you. Everyday you make my life a better place and I feel so much happier with you by my side.”

“No offence Jay but that sounded more like a marriage proposal and you can’t propose without dating a girl gees Jason.” She said laughing. He grabbed her face and pushed his lips to hers. They moved in sync as she grabbed his wrist. They broke apart and Jason opened his mouth "I feel the same bozo don't worry." He smiled.

"Which is why I've decided on something that will keep you out of harms way. You're never going on a mission again unless you're with me," Jason told Y/n in a half joking, half serious tone.

"Well you are the reason I’m in here anyway. But if I don't go how am I supposed to help you out. The whole team knows you never think of a plan." Jason laughed.

"So you never look behind you. Is there a reason for that or did you just do it?" Y/n shrugged.

"I guess if I look back then I'm scared I'm gonna get lost in the past and I won't be able to do anything 'cause I'll be stuck there. I’ve been stuck in the past for to long and I need to change it but no matter how much you want to change something in the past it's stuck there now forever and there's nothing you can do about it. " Jason was left speechless he never though there would be an actual reason as to why she never looked back. It scared Jason how she never had any emotion in her when she said that or in her face. "Besides I didn't want to see how far you were behind me." She added with a light laugh.

“More like how close I was.”

"Yeah right. I was faster than you and you knew it." They both laughedz

"Sir I'm sorry but visiting hours are almost over and Miss Y/l/n will need to get some rest." Jason nodded and pressed a long chaste kiss to the crown of Y/n’s head.

“Soon as your out of here I’m taking you on a date.” He whispered

“Can’t wait.” She whispered back and Jason broke out into a boyish grin. She chuckled. “Right go come on Jay I need my beauty sleep.”

“Trust me baby you really don’t.” She blushes and Jason chuckled. "See you tomorrow.”

“Bye handsome.” He excused himself past the nurse and towards the team.

"Do you know how long she's gonna be in here for?" Garfield asked Jason shook his head. Garfield’s demeanour slumped.

“I hope it’s not long though I’ve got to take her on a date.” Jason said everyone stared at him wide eyed. Garfield lightly punched his shoulder and Dick ruffled his hair.

"We'll visit her everyday though." Rachel said

"For sure." Jason said

"Let's get going." Kori suggested the team hummed in agreement before walking out of the hospital where Y/n wouldn’t be in for much longer.
