ooh these are all so good. So many choices.....

(first round i'm lucky. all my murderboys are competing against people i don't care about)

What is a murderboy?

A murderboy is a character that meets the following requirements:

Is male

Either commits murder, commits attempted murder, or directly or indirectly causes a significant amount of otherwise avoidable death

The fandom for the piece of media they're from absolutely does not know how to be normal about them. ("[x character] did nothing wrong" vs "[x character] is the literal devil" type arguments, for example)

So what are we doing here?

Simple! We're running polls to find Tumblr's Ultimate Murderboy!

Round one:

JD (Heathers) vs Magneto (marvel)

The Master (Doctor Who) vs Sebastian (Black Butler)

Oswald Cobblepot (Gotham) vs The Phantom of the Opera

Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen version) vs Ed Nygma (Gotham)

Hans (Frozen) vs Komaeda (Danganronpa)

Moash (Stormlight Archive) vs Dabi (My Hero Academia)

Loki (MCU) vs Steven Universe (Steven Universe)

Klaus (Vampire Diaries) vs Anakin Skywalker (Star Wars)

Light Yagami (Death Note) vs Edward Nashton (The Batman)

Kylo Ren (Star Wars) vs Springtrap/William Afton (FNAF)

Guillermo de la Cruz (WWDITS) vs Jim Moriarty (BBC Sherlock)

Ben Mitchell (Eastenders) vs Julian Fawcett (BBC Ghosts)

Ashfur (Warrior Cats) vs Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins version)

Adam (Forever) vs Simon Laurent (Infinity Train)

Guy of Gisborne (BBC Robin Hood) vs Jim Keats (Ashes to Ashes)

Simon Keyes (Ace Attorney) vs Scar (The Lion King)

We gotta do this again goyische gay tumblr? Please don’t use the aesthetic of the pink triangle with cutesy gay sayings on it. It’s holocaust imagery and it’s incredibly disrespectful.

i think the Jedi-Positive and Jedi-Critical stances can be summed up on whether you value authorial intent or authorial execution.

Most of the Jedi-Positive people I follow quote George Lucas and director commentaries to prove their points, as well as utilize analyses from others at LucasFilm that have to keep the general status quo. It's all based on what Lucas was trying to portray, while ignoring the product in execution.

The Jedi-Critical stance tends to look at the prequel execution, and they question the obvious uncomfortable moments that have real-life parallels to atrocities. They tend to be more Legends fans, whose writers actually delved into the terrifying implications. It's all on criticizing execution while disregarding intent.

Like, take the argument about Jedi children. A Jedi-Positive person would argue that all the children are all given up with consent from their parents; this is what I am sure Lucas was intending to portray. A Jedi-Critical person will look at this and go "wait. how much 'consent' was in this encounter? the government can legally take these kids and have a representative show up to a farmer's house and tell the farmer they can technically say no? that is some bullshit." And there is real-life evidence for this. It's more on the execution.

Or the argument about love. Jedi-Positive people turn to Lucas's interview to show that they really meant it in the Buddhist sense, and if you value intent that works. Jedi-Critical people would argue that the marketing states that the Jedi cannot love, and nothing in the movies states that the Jedi meant non-toxic love when they eschew attachments.

They're both valid positions, but I think a lot of fandom brutality comes from not understanding either view, or demeaning one view in favor of another. It's perfectly acceptable to value one over the other.

If Anakin hadn't been in love with Padme, do you think he still would've gone off the rails? Or do you think he would have found someone else to fixate on?

(He's the straight version of #gayDisaster, but I can't help but wonder how much of that was Padme's dramatic queen influence.)

the thing you have to understand about anakin is that he is bananas. his brain is a giant banana split with three scoops of vanilla ice cream and a pool of chocolate syrup and a single tiny maraschino cherry that comprises the part of his brain that questions his biases but that cherry is buried by the big old hunk of mushy gros michel swimming around his brain cavity just waiting to pour out of his ears at the slightest innocuous provocation. anakin skywalker thinks he’s the specialist little guy in the world and also god’s most hated creature and he hates himself for being alive and he hates everyone else for being alive and crucially. crucially. he cannot articulate any of this

and THEN. on top of the giant gooey mess that was once anakin’s brain, you add a literal evil genius, the kind of mastermind who looks at a traumatized child and is already imagining which bits of him he’s going to cut off to make a giant evil cyborg to do his bidding. palpatine took one look at the soup filling anakin’s skull and went ‘okay I can work with this’ and promptly started adding cyanide and never stopped.

there was no escape for anakin. there was never going to be an escape for anakin, because if it wasn’t padmé it was going to be obi-wan or ahsoka or rex or any one of a million other people with palpatine waiting at the end of the tunnel like the most evil grandpa you’ve seen in your life
