Adding to my post about the Cat King and how his actions are more understandable when you view him through the lens of him being a cat:
The Cat King doesn't fully start acting more human until after he dies.
Yeah, we see him lounging around and looking at the bracelet like a moody Victorian love interest, but it's still very catlike. He's missing the person he got attached to, so he's back to playing with a toy that reminds him of that person. He's confident and cocky when Esther breezes in, acting like nothing is wrong---
And then she beats him to death.
There's something to be said, I think, about how when we meet the Cat King for the first time, he's a fluffy ginger boy, and a large one at that (I think, I've only ever had large cats and he looked normal-size to me, which means that he's big). Which fits with his personality---he's flamboyant, he's showy, and he acts on instinct instead of any rational thought. You can't really get any more "cat" than a creamsicle boy who is somehow always doing exactly the wrong thing at exactly the wrong time.
But when the Cat King's reborn, he's a smaller, sleek black cat. His style's darker, less showier, more personal. He feels a bit more grounded, a bit more human. And he acts like it.
TL;DR: Something something leaving bad habits behind when you die and doing something different with your new life
