How To Be More Inclusive In Your Reader-Inserts
How to be More Inclusive in Your Reader-Inserts
I finally made something for fanfiction writers to use as reference on things to avoid when writing. if you are making a reader-insert story, be sure as most people as possible can see themselves fufilling the role you want them to in your story.
I became a POC fanfiction writer after years of feeling excluded in reader-insert fanfiction. It’s important as a job as a writer to know your audience—some of which may not always fit in your “view”.
Please take the time to read this to help better yourself in the future. I know I didn’t hit every issue, but I’m willing to update it in the future.
I apologize if this isn’t the prettiest thing, but it was important for me to create.

Happy Bisexual Visibilty day! Whether you’re able to be visible or not, you are valid and you are loved!

The more reasons I love DIO and why he is my comfort character
My Top Bicons (In Anime and Real Life)
Happy Bisexual Visibility Day! Fellow bis, please beware that you’ll be visible to the human eye on this day! Here I’ve complied a list of my bicons, both confirmed (in pink) and not confirmed.
- Frida Kahlo (confirmed)
If she’s not on every bi person’s bicon list then I dunno what to tell ya. She’s iconic and will continue to be that way for years to come. Her artworks are beyond personal, almost too intimate, and I love her for that.

- Erwin Smith from Shingeki no Kyojin (not confirmed)
Now, Erwin’s sexuality was never confirmed but as an Eruri shipper, I fully believe that he was bisexual. He truly loved Mary but he also had a beautiful bond with Levi, be it platonic or romantic. I still cry about him.

- Dio Brando from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure (confirmed)
How can I, a JoJo fan, not mention Dio in my bicons list? He’s not the most moral character and he’s done some pretty terrible things, but I can’t help but love this man. He is simply DIOsexual.

- Li Shang from Mulan (1998) (not confirmed)
This is me attempting to forget about the 2020 remake while playing “I’ll make a man out of you” in my earbuds. I didn’t see this the first few times I watched it, but now I fully see the bi-ness in Shang.

- Rosa Diaz (and by extension Stephanie Beatriz) from Brooklyn 99 (confirmed)
Rosa is the first confirmed bisexual character I’ve seen in TV and media even before I came out as bi. Even then I found her bravery to be very compelling and now I love her even more!

- Chandler Bing from Friends (not confirmed)
Chandler’s here since I definitely see the bi-ness in him. I love the idea of him being in a hetero marriage while still being bi. Phoebe was going to be on the list too but I’ve got another one of Lisa Kudrow’s characters here:

- Maggie Naird from Space Force (confirmed)
One of my personal highlights from Space Force was her being unsure of her sexuality because she’s neither gay nor straight. Maggie and her husband figuring out an open marriage was very heartfelt as well.

- Usagi Tsukino from Sailor Moon (pan) (semi-confirmed)
I haven’t finished Sailor Moon and I can’t believe I didn’t get the gay subplots as a kid. She’s more pansexual than bi since she’s gender blind but she’s still a queer icon no matter what!

And that’s it for my list! What bicons do you have?
Rachel

I wasn’t gonna make more, but my IG followers love Yas, so I did the most requested c:

Anatomy of lightning Row 1, 2, & 4 (Left) Row 3: Left, Middle, Right Row 4: Middle, Right Bottom Image
A while back I made a twitter post about how self shipping and OC/canon is okay, and engaging in your interests is valid. However I noticed more acceptance toward women/feminine people who self ship, and a lot of disdain toward men or masculine people doing the same thing… I even got comments saying “yeah well if a guy does it, it’s cringe.”
(This language isn’t meant to exclude nonbinary people by the way, I’m nonbinary and masc-leaning. But there is an obvious difference in response toward men & masculine nonbinary folk, vs women & feminine nonbinary folk when it comes to fandom/things like this.)
Obviously, that’s BS. I just wanna say to all men and masculine folks who selfship or like oc/canon: You’re not “cringey” or “weird” for selfshipping as a man or masc person. Your gender doesn’t automatically make you a creep, it doesn’t make you weird, and it doesn’t make you “cringey.” This especially goes for mlm or nblm.
Expressing yourself in positive ways is good and you deserve to enjoy yourself. As long as you’re not hurting anyone, nobody else can tell you what to do. Nobody else gets to dictate your self-expression.
