Rhaegar grew up far more differently then Viserys did. Rhaegar was loved, only prince and child of the king and queen till Viserys was born, that dude had like everything and he still fucked up byt being too idealistic and lost in prophecy.

And when he was little Aerys was definitely not mad, so for sometime he also had a stable childhood.

Viserys is from my opinion unnecessarily hated so much in the fandom, like he grew up on streets, begging and mocked. No Targaryen Prince ever had that life. Of course he turned out the way he turned out. And he still took care of Dany as long as he could.

Imagine you are an older sibling, so if your parents die and you lose all of your assets and money and the world wants to kill your younger sibling and you but you have to survive because you come from great dynasty and people compare you to your dead brother because of whom you lost everything... I will be surprised if you are were able to keep your sanity.

But if we are going by personality wise then I think maybe no war, no tourney crowing another woman.

Because Rhaegar did what he wanted his whole life but Viserys did not, he was literally all about his duty to his house, his duty to win back everything because it wouldn't have been hard for him if he just settled down with an Essosi noble lady and let go of Westeros. He did not.
