A Clash Of Kings: The Illustrated Edition - Daenerys Targaryen In The Red Waste By Lauren K. Cannon

A Clash of Kings: The Illustrated Edition - Daenerys Targaryen in the Red Waste by Lauren K. Cannon

The Dothraki named the comet shierak qiya, the Bleeding Star. The old men muttered that it omened ill, but Daenerys Targaryen had seen it first on the night she had burned Khal Drogo, the night her dragons had awakened. It is the herald of my coming, she told herself as she gazed up into the night sky with wonder in her heart. The gods have sent it to show me the way. — Daenerys I

Jon and Dany as Yin and Yang, Or: Why Jon Can't Kill Daenerys

Jon And Dany As Yin And Yang, Or: Why Jon Can't Kill Daenerys

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/80572280817561263/

Of all the characters in George RR Martin’s A Song Of Ice And Fire, few share as many prominent parallels as Jon and Dany. Both are young leaders, ostracized from their family in distant corners of the world, as well as the last scions of House Targaryen (thanks to R+L=J).

The similarities in their stories are undeniable:

Jon allies with wildings, Dany allies with Dothraki (two nomadic cultures considered outcasts by many in society)

Jon assumes power as Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, Dany assumes power as Queen of Meereen

Jon has Ghost, a white wolf, while Dany has Drogon, a black dragon

Jon is ill-treated as a bastard, Dany is ill-treated as a woman

Abusive (to different extents) relatives -- Jon and Catelyn, Dany and Viserys

Jon’s first love is the fiery Ygritte, who dies in his arms. Dany’s first love is her sun-and-stars Drogo, who also dies in her arms

Both mothers -- Lyanna and Rhaella -- died giving birth to them

Both are the third child: Aegon, Rhaenys, Jon, and Rhaegar, Viserys, Daenerys

Jon was born beneath a bleeding star (House Dayne’s ancestral sword Dawn was present at the Tower of Joy), while Dany was born amidst a storm on Dragonstone (and again in Drogo’s funeral pyre)

Both exiled: Jon to the Wall and Dany to the Free Cities of Essos

Both have Mormont mentors: Lord Commander Jeor and Ser Jorah

Both are undoing their ancestors’ mistakes: Jon allies with wildlings instead of warring against them like his Stark ancestors. Meanwhile, Dany smashes the slave trade, which was perpetuated by her Valyrian ancestors

Both are magical characters with political plotlines: Jon will be resurrected by Melisandre, Dany survives fire and hatches dragons

Ghost saves Jon from a wight, Drogon saves Dany from the Undying

Neither can have children: Jon swore vows (and might be unable to have children post-resurrection) and Dany was seemingly cursed by Mirri Maz Duur

They have kingly brothers: Robb (the King in the North) and Viserys (the Beggar King)

Jon meets Melisandre the Red Priestess, Dany meets Quaithe the Shadowbinder (both from Asshai)

Jon is offered the chance to go home and be Lord of Winterfell by Stannis. He refuses. Dany is offered the chance to go home and seize the Iron Throne by Xaro Xhoan Daxos. She refuses.

Both bring their sigil animals back to life: Jon finds Ghost the direwolf, Dany wakes the dragons

Jon is said to be more Stark than his siblings, Dany is shown to be more Targaryen than Viserys (plus fAegon and Jon)

Both have sun and moon love interests (if they get together in the books) -- Ygritte and Val, Drogo and Jon

Both were spirited away shortly after their birth for their protection: Ned took Jon back to Winterfell and raised him as his bastard, Dany was taken to Essos away from the House Baratheon

Both are given priceless Valyrian objects: Longclaw and the dragon eggs

Jon is assassinated in A Dance With Dragons; Dany is almost assassinated in ADWD when she is given poisoned honeyed locusts (which Strong Belwas eats instead)

The parallels are endless. And that’s not all. Dany and Jon are also alchemical partners.

Jon is a White King. He:

Has a white direwolf

Lives in the snowy wilderness of the wall

Has a Stark mother

An ice dragon

Daenerys is a Red Queen. She:

Rides a black and red dragon

Lives in the sunny, scorching east

Is a Targaryen, born in blood and fire

A fire dragon

(Check out this great blog for more information about Jon, Dany, and alchemical symbolism)

So what does this mean?

Jon and Dany: Yin and Yang, Divine Masculine and Feminine

Dany and Jon’s appearance as well as their bonded animals represent their dual symbolism as yin and yang. Dany has white/silvery blonde hair and a black dragon. Jon is dark-haired with a white direwolf. Drogon and Ghost both have red eyes.

“Dogs moved between the tables, trailing after the serving girls. One of them, a black mongrel bitch with long yellow eyes, caught a scent of the chicken. She stopped and edged under the bench to get a share. Jon watched the confrontation. The bitch growled low in her throat and moved closer. Ghost looked up, silent, and fixed the dog with those hot red eyes.”

“In the smoldering red pits of Drogon's eyes, Dany saw her own reflection. How small she looked, how weak and frail and scared. I cannot let him see my fear. She scrabbled in the sand, pushing against the pitmaster's corpse, and her fingers brushed against the handle of his whip.”

Jon And Dany As Yin And Yang, Or: Why Jon Can't Kill Daenerys

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/384213411953264186/

According to this website, yin and yang represents "an ancient Chinese symbol for the union of opposites — the masculine and feminine energies that are present in all of life."

This symbolism in their stories show us why Jon and Daenerys - the lead hero and heroine of ASOIAF - represent the divine masculine and feminine, or as show!Melisandre says, “two parts of a greater whole.”

This is why Jon killing Daenerys is a misogynistic story. It is, very literally, the masculine principle slaying the feminine principle. Jon killing Dany, whether to forge Lightbringer or to save the world from her ‘madness,’ is misogynistic at its core. And I don’t think GRRM would have included all of this symbolism with a sexist story ending like that in mind.

(Check out LML’s Azor Ahai the Bad Guy video for more information about how Azor Ahai killing Nissa Nissa was no act of heroism!)

TL;DR: Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen represent yin and yang, masculine and feminine, etc. That’s why Jon killing Dany is misogyny, however its dressed up.
