I Bet None Of These People Could Name A Game Theyve Played That Wasnt Somehow Inspired By The Castlevania

I bet none of these people could name a game they’ve played that wasn’t somehow inspired by the Castlevania series. And yeah it’s not nearly as popular now as it once was, but holy shit it’d be easier to list off games that WEREN’T directly or indirectly inspired by these games. Especially indie games. You would not believe how many times I’ve played a game, heard some chord progressions, and immediately been reminded of Castlevania. Shovel Knight is practically a love letter to a lot of older platformers, but the Castlevania influence bleeds from this game; they even made Specter Knight’s boss battle very obviously based on Death!

And Metroid came out first, but without Simon’s Quest we wouldn’t have the Metroidvania genre as we know it. Heck, we wouldn’t have a lot of genres. Soulsborne style is heavily inspired by that game down to the map progression and atmosphere, just in a 3D format. I’ve run into multiple people who call Simon’s Quest both a proto-soulsborne and proto-metroidvania as well as a precursor to the modern psychological and survival horror genres. Hell it was one of the first series to put multiple endings into a platforming game, that was usually reserved for text based or RPGs. And that’s only the second game in the whole series!

Hell, I’d even say that for years before the Netflix series came out the series was considered on the same level as other classic, respected franchises. I’d see entries from it in lists of like “games you should play before you die” alongside Legend of Zelda and Halo or something. All those early 2000s gamer collages with logos from famous series would have Castlevania in it somewhere. If anything I’ve seen LESS people talking about the game since the show has been out unless it’s to dog on it for the reason of “teehee I have a popular ‘unpopular’ opinion and will make some people mad and most people agree with me”

Man, I don’t know, it’s just infuriating and sad. :(

I would absolutely love it if I could look up one of the only things making life bearable rn without seeing either a constant stream of content about a show that makes me deeply uncomfortable or “actually your favorite character is boring as hell and does not work at all in anything and has no effect on the story at large and also doesn’t matter and sucks and he doesn’t do anything remarkable or have enough abilities to warrant any attention and literally you can skip those games tbh they don’t have a story anyway play this fan game that changes all of the dialogue instead because he is so lame and has no personality or plot significance whatsoever he could spontaneously not exist and nothing would really change even that show you don’t like that doesn’t really adapt anything from the games and changes everything about every character they decide to write about couldn’t make him interesting he is that much of a nothing nobody character because he has no modern triple A game level cutscenes he is basically whip man Mario he go kill Dracula so boring that’s it”

10. No text for this one, but I doodled this cause I kept missing the jump in this level, it was my first time playing it when I drew this so I was not very good yet. I love how the rings have little bats tho, like that’s such a cute detail. :3

Yippie! So silly (kinda sad) idea I had I while ago that I need to draw about again aaaa— Anyway, there were a lot details that had me thinking about stuff in certain games. Harmony of Despair has the “Helmont/Shiimon/Simon Wraith” enemies that have this ominous description of “some say this is what happened to Simon Belmont in the end”, and it’s just never mentioned again. Like damn ok that’s uh some interesting information wow uh— Also that coupled with the hanging skeletons being a reference to Simon in CV4 and also being in the hanged man position, the family heirlooms in the ghostly Dracula’s castle in Harmony of Dissonance, and the quest for Anna in Order of Ecclesia about helping her cat protect her from dark spirits that’s ended with a really sudden line about her having nightmares about a man with a whip fighting something scary, my guy is haunting the narrative and doesn’t sound like he’s doing so great 💀.

So the Ghost Simon concept was born and uh here he is I guess lol. Part of it also came from the idea that we’ve already seen a ghost companion in the series in Wind (if you know you know), but what if there was one you had to help that was a little more uh what’s the word… tormented? Vengeful? Upset in general? Yeah. He’s kinda just a mix of a bunch of different ghost lore, not one in particular. Fun fact: Dulahans sometimes use their own spines as a whip :3. And in a lot of folklore Strigoi often prey on their own family members, especially the younger girls in the family. But yeah, he’s just kind of a nuisance, not really like ‘evil’ or anything. Breaks things sometimes, generally pesters people, only occasionally a minor threat. Maybe leaves bloody footprints sometimes, turns paintings crooked, writes omens on walls, ya know, average ghost activities. I like to think that the boss rush with him in HoD is what he’s been doing for a while. Maybe Juste unknowingly takes him home with some of the furniture, probably the grandfather clock lol. Idk it’s just a fun what if idea for fun tho mostly d(^^ ).

These are absolutely horrible captures of it that mess up the color and lighting a ton, BUT, the little sprite of Miran is working!!!! He walk!!!!!!!! Yippie!!!!!! Now I have to do all the tile sets and stuff then I can start building the actual gameplay part of it d(^^ ). But yippie! One project I’m working on is going decently!!!

Eyestrain cw tho, my camera really messed up the colors and brightened them all (;w; ). I’ll have to figure out how to properly screenshot things next time I post about it.

And yeah that is a song playing in the background, I had a Castlevania soundtrack playing while I worked. I’m gonna have to figure out music and stuff too I guess, right now I have all the preset music turned off.
