Yeah, I mean "attack" might be a strong word in my opinion but I definitely think a confrontation is implied by how he tells Rapunzel he's had to lie low because "The people of Corona aren't too keen on guys who attack their princess".

So even if we didn't get to see it, I definitely think there were some tensions between him and his fellow villagers, for more reasons than one.

Background characters aren't usually what comes to mind when you think of "advancing the plot", but in this case I think they may have.

The villagers of Old Corona presumably left to escape the black rocks, but don't you think they wondered why Quirin - their leader - didn't come with them? Or his son for that matter? It's entirely possible they went back to search for him, but found Varian instead. I'm not sure what he would've told them, but I wanted to depict this interaction anyway.
