I'm really trying to manage my expectations but like I said, I think this is our last chance of a proper film for a documentary.

I agree with this anon. As a big RM/NJ fan i'm hoping for a different style of docu, more mature, more artistic, more like a movie. Maybe just not made by BH? I watched JKs "I am still" in a rather quiet cinema in my small country (glad for that) and i have to admit i was happy i didn't pay more than 17 €. There was not much i hadn't seen yet, and half of it were the songs from his Golden gig in Seoul which i saw too. Thank God I love JK very much and he is a sight for sore eyes to see 😍
But it also gave me the impression he is "not there" yet. He (and BH i guess) want to portraite him as the new pop idol and he can be that ofcourse, but... imo he can be much more (if he wants to) He gave us many beautiful songs and GCF so he is way more artistic than this. They should use that, and just like anon i hope they will after MS.
I also agree that Jimin chose to take that road, more artistic, more pourring out of himself/what he went thru and kept that also in his docu. FACE still is top.
And well yeah the baggy clothes... a bit too much smt. Love to see them in those suits again 😍
Sorry, not much of a question, but I just wanted to share my thoughts.
Thank you for sending this in anon.... before y'all read the rest of my thoughts, I wanna warn you I went on a TANGENT. Not that I think this was the main point of your message but apparently I wanted to talk about it. Below the cut to save our feeds:
I don't think i necessarily agree on the idea that jk is not fully developed. I think he is just currently better as a team player focusing on his particular area of expertise. I've been wanting to do a deep-dive into this idea that everyone thinks all artists should also be successful solo acts and I just plain don't think that's true. Such thinking can diminish the absolute majesty that is different people coming together for one goal.
Jimin made a very brief comment during the infamous Festa dinner about not seeing himself as a solo artist but instead as a member of a team. And boy chapter 2. It's like ppl suddenly thought the goal was to prove that the members are only valuable if they're also successful solo artists. NOPE.
I don't think some of you realize just how difficult cohesive teamwork is. Let alone teamwork that's so incredibly artistic? And that's been largely fueled by members themselves. Yes, they definitely have had their external guideposts but there's still a good portion that's had to have been driven by their wants, needs, goals, and work ethic.
I've said it from the beginning but one of the things I'm most excited to see when they return as a complete team is how their dynamic is going to change now that some members have stepped into roles they previously bypassed. There's going to be a new status quo and I'm so interested to see how it all lands.
...well that was tangent, I'll stop there. Definitely not negatively directed at you anon, but thanks for getting the juices flowing!
I just read your I Am Still review and it makes me curious what namjoon's movie (not sure if its meant to be a docu?) will look like.
I know BH could do better in a lot of ways, but I do think a lot of the stuff tied to bts' solo promotions is really a reflection of where they are at artistically as individuals. Like I'm sure BH lays out a profit plan (i.e. we want an album, a video release, merch, etc.), but other than that, I do think a lot of it is up to them what direction they take. Like if they have something specific in mind or want to go waaaay more artistic, namjoon's solo seems to show that BH will put in the money and allow them to do that. On the other hand, I do think, if they don't have a direction in mind, BH just gives them the memories, in-house BH editor treatment (which could be better and they could at least get an actual docu director if they plan for a theatrical release, I know people felt this way even for Beyond the Star).
I actually love a lot of the songs on Golden (I'm a pop-whore through and through), but I do think jungkook hasn't quite found himself yet, or his unique artistic vision. And I think that flows into the content related to the album. I don't know if its controversial to say as a fan, but I think even calling the album "Golden" and then comments I've seen about the docu, it feels more like him trying to live up to his "Golden Maknae" status of mega pop stardom than necessarily finding himself in this album. And to be clear, those things don't have to be mutually exclusive! But I do think jungkook doesn't necessarily dig deep or get vulnerable in this album, so it doesn't surprise me that the docu might also feel that way. I also feel like this is why JPD might feel a little more cohesive, because I do think jimin is farther along in his artistic journey (being vulnerable, knowing what he wants to say as an artist even if its not fully polished yet, etc.). And this no shade to jungkook, I think all of the vocal line haven't had the opportunity to grow outside the group like the rap line has, especially the younger members whose entire artistic career/view has been shaped within a group setting. Finding yourself takes time, and trial and error. Sometimes I feel like jimin doesn't get enough credit for the fact that his first entirely solo project was so personal and he was so involved in the entire creative conception of it, especially for someone as reserved as him.
I am excited to see what Jin will end up coming out with (I love the The Astronaut song) and it'll be interesting to see the direction each member takes post military service. Even styling-wise, I'm curious what each member will do. I've hated jimin's styling for all of his solo projects (except the sparkly denim LC outfit) and most of jungkook's outside of SNTY. Please let the weird, ugly mullet, lego hair-piece looking stuff die and also extremely baggy clothes. I need fashion to have evolved by the time they get discharged because jimin should not need to be pulling up his pant's leg while he dances.
Hi anon,
Thank you for sending this in. I apologize that it's been ages, I got quite sick for a bit there and didn't have the energy to deal with tumblr. (Sidenote, the feed is kind of a disaster right now. I hope people can return to celebrating content again soon, I'm ready to stop unfollowing people every time I log in.)
Anyway, I'm so glad you brought up Namjoon's film because I'm so INTRIGUED. What are the criteria for this film festival? Is there any hope that it's been handled properly? What do we know about the director? Is this just another Hybe edit and they've strong-armed is into the festival? Is there going to be any way for us to watch it?
I don't really have any answers to these questions yet but it's kind of my only hope left of a decent film that's not just bangtantv content.
I actually really loved the idea of Golden being the album title and many of the choices surrounding it's release. Such great imagery and art surrounding his tattoos and just completely celebrating everything that led to JK as a person. But...it has very little connection to the actual music. Again, other than this idea that JK was actively pursuing himself as an extremely technically-exceptional singer, what does Golden have to do with the music? Other than one (possible coincidental) reference in STNY, this album could have been called anything. It's not the worst offense of an album but the rest of BTS's work has raised my expectations in having all sides of a release being exceptional. And this just wasn't for me. Not bad. But not astounding.
Also, can I say I'm so relieved to hear someone else voicing my same opinions on the styling for JM that last year. I absolutely despised the mullets and the baggy puts that he had to lift during choreo. Seriously anon, how did you get inside my brain?? I didn't mention this anywhere because everyone was gushing about it but it just pulled me out of it. Every.Single.Time. Can we be besties? Lol
Anyway, I'm sure I missed something in your ask. Still not feeling 100% but I don't want to delay this response any longer. Thank you so much for your patience!
I saw Jungkook's documentary this weekend and have just a few thoughts. If you're avoiding spoilers, don't click the cut!

The Hybe Documentary Format

So...as a reminder to you all, I do not have professional expertise in the film industry. I'm just a very discerning consumer. I also haven't seen Hobi's documentary and I watched Road to D-Day while I was quite ill last year so I only vaguely remember some bits. (I'll definitely be getting back to those sooner rather than later though as research for a series of posts I'm developing.) That being said, I think we have enough data points to state that Hybe has absolutely no interest in filmmaking techniques outside of music videos.
I did mostly enjoy my experience seeing this film yesterday and I'm always grateful for any amount of footage the members are willing to share with us but this 'documentary ' was worse than Jimin's Production Diary. Any of you that managed to make it through my rambling review will know how dissatisfied I was with that.
I Am Still is not a documentary, it's a mixture of showcase footage and behind-the-scenes clips, most of which has already been divulged in the various episodes and shooting sketches on YouTube. Honestly, if you're not able to see the film, just go rewatch all of the bangtantv content for JKs solo period and the showcase and you'll be up to speed with 85% of what was in the documentary.
There are definitely some expansions to the storylines featured in the bangtantv content; mostly being anything that wasn't overtly optimistic. For example, we learn a little bit more about just how sick JK was during the Seven/3D promotions. That content likely was pulled from the bangtantv edit because it would have put a damper on the promotions and given certain 'fans' a focus to fixate their vitriol. But overall, it feels more like an extended version of existing content rather than a new work. At least JPD didn't continually feed us footage we'd seen before.
I'm someone who gets completely bothered by previews spoiling content so I didn't watch any of the promos until after I saw it and I am so glad I skipped them because most of the 'original' scenes of the film were featured in least one of them. Alas, that's a separate issue of which I'm definitely in the minority.
Was There No Structure?

Kinda. Like JPD, there is a semblance of a structure: Attempting to follow the chronology of release activities for JKs GOLDEN album through the lens of JKs staement trying to prove that he is still worthy of everything he was being hailed as during the BTS group activities but I don't feel this was successfully executed. It jumps round enough and isn't very successful in explaining the events if you didn't already know about them. The film starts with the SEVEN performance at GMA and footage that we've already seen of JK recording SEVEN, not mentioning anything about the music video or really how JK got involved with the song in the first place. The rest of the story beats have similar missing points.
They have a vague narrative with the 'I Am Still' points but that's mostly carried by subs and a couple of moments that JK mentions himself. I'm not saying it's not true or wasn't top-of-mind for JK during this process but it's not the main point of many of the moment/messages he shared with us during this time period so it feels a little disingenuous since everything else jn this film really only makes sense if you've already seen quite a lot of behind-the-scenes content.
Honestly, it makes me question the intended audience. Obviously, they know that ARMY will shell out whatever we need to when there's new content from our members but most of us will have already seen all of the bangtantv content so we are already familiar with the most of the footage in this film. I genuinely don't think this was produced in such a way to be palatable for audiences not familiar with BTS so who does that leave? Our friends and family that are peripherally aware of the content but haven't learned the basics of JKs album? ARMY with short term memories only?
But again, it seems this film was compiled by an editing team and not lead by a director with experience in crafting a documentary. The only new footage that Ican guarantee was captured with the express purpose of being included in this film was the few clips of JK talking in the practice room with the albums displayed by him. But we all know that's where all of the promo clips were gathered as well. I have issues with that approach as well but I'll leave this point alone for now unless anyone is interested.
Suffice it to say, all of these suppositions over the past year about how JKs documentary was getting special treatment or even questioning about investment in a project up front are dead. This was a product assembled with bits of what they already had completely in-house which was sold for distribution.
So, Did We Learn NOTHING?

No, there are a few Golden nuggets (see what I did there?). I can't recall everything having only seen it once (and having a rather disruptive audience - I swear there were only dozen or so ppl in my theater but I forget how obnoxious teenagers can be. I'm glad they're enjoying and supporting but we really didn't need light sticks flashing during a film and how many times does one person need to get up to answer their phone during this runtime? Three according to the row in front of mine.)
Anyway, something I thought was interesting to learn was that Standing Next To You was initially recorded the day after JK heard it for the first time. And hearing a little more about how JK yearned to perform that song definitelygot me thinking a little more about it. We can't reach any conclusions just with this little nugget but it does open the door to some theories. Like perhaps they were initially planning to have JK record two separate albums? SEVEN and 3D would be the singles of the first and JK would perform them as we saw but perhaps STNY was originally planned to be the single of the 2nd album that would release while he was in the military and thus be unable to perform it? Maybe JK loved STNY so much that everything was grouped into one album and Never Let Go was the only track held back for ms? Definitely some theorizing space to be had now.
Final thoughts?

Similar to my thoughts on the GCF: Budapest (which I feel would have had a much better reception if it had been labeled as a bangtan episode rather than a GCF), I AM Still should not have purported to be a documentary. It was much more similar to the annual Memories compilations. But the general public would not have shelled out the $25 to go to a theater to watch a Memories DVD so alas, we have our content packaged as a ~documentary~...
Did my view on the music change at all? Not because of the documentary. We're coming up on the year anniversary of GOLDEN and it's still definitely not my favorite. I completely understand why some people like it but it's just not to my taste. The overall impact falls a little flat for me. Too much breadth and not enough depth. I came into my musical soul during the 00s emo phase and will always be a sucker for music that absolutely drips in an emotional way rather than catchy songs vaguely referencing heartache and love. Again, just a matter of viewpoint.
I do think most of these songs stand much better being shuffled amongst other artists in a Playlist and several of them are significantly better when JK sang them live but I still won't be listening to them regularly. I wholeheartedly believe JK completed his task of proving himself as an extremely dedicated and versatile singer and performer. He's definitely got some solid points added to his resume after this project.

Y'all know how much I love a poll! If any of you happen to have not seen Storm's poll, please vote to get a better sample size.
Hi, I really like your blog and found no better place to rant.
Before I start, I hope to clarify a couple of points to set a clear context:
1. I'm a baby army.
2. I'm an Asian.
3. I am straight. (Don't get me wrong, my personal belief is that love has no gender)
I ran into Taekook videos when I first discovered BTS with zero to no idea about shipping culture. The fact that TKrs claimed their relationship to be real seemed ridiculous to me. I genuinely thought that people were forcing their weird fantasies on two men who have a good friendship. So I moved away from TKr or 'shipper' content and started to watch BTS as a whole with absolutely no idea that parallel ships had a fandom. That's when I came across GCF in Saipan. That freaking video!!!! There was no way I could turn away from looking at JK and JM differently. The song, the editing and just how ethereal JM looked or smiled irrespective of his weird antics and spontaneous shots seemed pure, full of trust and openness. That's how I discovered Jikook and it has been 2 months now.
This also brought me to another discovery, Heterosexism. I work at a corporate company and had a casual discussion with my colleagues regarding an awareness training about eliminating bias and I was surprised at the reaction for a topic surrounding homosexuals. The media here romanticises that homosexuality is accepted, with a few articles on recent homosexual relationships and weddings. But on a deeper scale, the citizens are still homophobic. I was told off for showing support to the pride community, to the extent where I was asked if I was a homosexual.
Finally getting to my question, I have noticed that a lot of jikook supporters are homosexuals. What about people who are not part of the pride community? Is there a good number of people who are straight but not homophobic? Is there a safe space for us to show our support without being judged for it?
True Allyship is appreciated at most pride events and with most queer people. If you are talking about within the Jikook spaces, I do think a large portion of Jikookers are queer is some sense, but a lot of them are straight too. And as long as you aren't talking over queer voices or making a queer safe space no longer safe, I think it's fine for you to be involved.
I'm pretty sure I've got a fairly large following of straight people here anyway too. But let's do another poll and see. These are always lower engagement than the amount of followers I actually have, but it gets a sample size at least. Lol polls are totally anonymous too, in case anyone was worried.
Last time I did this, there was confusion for my aro/ace friends. Y'all are the A in LGBTQIA+. You count as queer, my loves 💜
If you aren't an ally, you don't get an option and you can unfollow 😂
I've got my issues with fake support and Allyship from shippers, but that's a separate discussion and I do think that there are a lot of people who are true and good allies here.
Even being on three different teams couldn't keep them apart. 🥰

It has been an EMOTIONAL 2 DAYS. If anyone wants to send me kind words or anything yoonminkook so I don't run away screaming forever. I would appreciate it 💜🥰😂
Me just trying to find my peace again 🙃😂

Y'all...I'm not SAYING I manifested Hobi's weverse post but I just scheduled a poll about his return for @bts-polls and then we get his lovely little letter?? I must just have been picking up on his telepathy or something!

Hi! This is about your aspec, BTS and shipping discussion.
I am very new to this fandom and I needed some time to come to conclusion about what Jikook are to each other in my personal opinion. What I settled on is that they undoubtedly have (or at least still had at the time of their last prolonged shared public appearance last December) a very, very close, intense relationship. I have doubts that it is platonic, but I can’t be sure 100%. And frankly, I don’t care about the exact nature of their relationship, because canon has never stopped me from shipping whatever the hell I want.
Now, in the process of coming to this conclusion, I've encountered a lot of posts that analyzed some of Jikook interactions, or answered some insecure shippers, or trolls pretending to be insecure shippers. Sometimes there were remarks that people who weren’t convinced by all the obvious Jikook moments/behaviors, didn’t see that Jikook were queer/together MUST be homophobic (or delusional cultists from the other side of the ship war, or both). And it always made me uncomfortable, because what about people like me?
I think of myself as being somewhere on the ace spectrum (with a side of being shit at human interactions in general). I’ve always been confused by/blind to a large degree to intricacies of outward expressions of people’s romantic/sexual relationships. I don’t notice it unless it is very, very obvious. I am a real-life representation of an “Oblivious Character X” fanfic trope. I am an oblivious fool who doesn’t recognize when they are flirting, who gets invited and taken on a date and doesn’t realize what’s happening until it’s too late. I also have difficulties recognizing these behaviors between other people/couples both in RL or in media (it goes both for queer and het relationships).
I can’t know for sure, but I think that if I just watched BTS content (like AYS for example) without being primed for shipping, I most likely would have read Jikook as just really good friends (lol) and even if I noticed anything sus they do, most likely I would have rationalized it as cultural differences and fanservice. And I don’t think homophobia has anything to do with it in this case.
I don’t have any actual question to ask, so sorry for rambling and thank you for reading if you did, also for sharing your thoughts in your previous posts.
Hi anon,
Thank you for sending this in as you've demonstrated the point I was making. These posts were not about any of the member's themselves but about the harm to those of us out here that do fall into other sexualties and the erasure we feel when certain declarations are continuously made with no challenges.
It's definitely been interesting to see the anons pouring into my inbox in the past day though. It's exceedingly clear that they don't even read the actual posts and just want to argue for the sake of arguing. They'll have to go do it elsewhere, though as I said, I wouldn't be posting any that aren't made in good faith and are willing to have a nuanced discussion.
...and here we go with the anons. I'm not posting any of you, but I am going to say this one more time. Please tell me where in my previous posts I was actually trying to convince anyone what any of the member's sexualties may be.
I'll paste the relevant bit but my specific point is that when you engage in shipping discourse along the lines of '____ member doing ____ action can ONLY be because their attraction is ____', that's when erasure happens. No matter what behavior and sexuality you're discussing.
Specifically I'd like to talk but ace-aro erasure. Now, before any of you jump on me, I AM NOT SAYING THAT I THINK ANY OF THE MEMBERS ARE ASPEC. I just want to remind you that when you make sweeping statements like 'you only have to look at them to know', you are implicitly stating that anyone who chooses to partake in similar actions could ONLY be doin so because of an attraction.
And thus lies the erasure of all aspecs. Statements like these prescribe what actions we are allowed to take or not take. I realize all identities exist on a spectrum but the ace-aro spectrums are so vast, there can be very little in common between two individuals that utilize these labels. I know I personally will affinities for differing sub-lables nearly day-to-day. So umbrella statements in general set me on edge but any that draw conclusions about someone's sexuality based solely on an outside perspective of their actions? Nope, I can't vibe with that.
This conversation is not limited to the BTS fandom and frankly applies to the entirety of society but alas, it's all too typical in ace-aro spaces.
I also find it interesting that all of you include links to Twitter posts as well. I'd invite you to stand on the strength of your own arguments. Unless you're pointing to an expert in the fields of sexual behaviors and identities or direct quotes from the members themselves, there is absolutely no reason to point to another individual's opinions. I'm not on Twitter for a reason and I'm definitely not going to go look up other ppls opinions if you clearly didn't read what the post you're responding to is stating.
Hi just read that last opinion from anon, and i was so glad i´m not the only one thinking like that. I´m demi sexual which i found out rather late. So now i´m single for a few yrs. I´ve been watching JK and Jimin for a few yrs and i believe they love eo. I do think they have a special bond and they prob tried more. But to say they are "married couple" or together for yrs now without trying anything else?? Idk, not sure. Maybe they have a "together but apart" relation? Bc with their schedules, espec now with solo era, idk if something else is possible.
Many times i´m afraid of saying things like this bc you´re either an insecure jkker or an anti or smth. I´m just a jkk supporter and no matter what happens i will just support their choices. And i really had it with the fanwars and vile ppl everywhere.
Thank you for sharing anon. Sadly I've had more than a few convos with ppl here about how we're disregarded from queer spaces and discourse to the point where we're really not even considered present.
As an aroace myself, I have sometimes wondered about the relationship status between Jimin and Jungkook. Not because I don't think they love each other, because it's obvious that they do. But because I love my friends so strongly, that sometimes, people who do not know me, think that I am in a relationship with a couple of them. I am, but it's just not the relationship they think about. It's literally just a very strong friendship.
The complete aspec erasure is so strong in the BTS community. It often feels like there is absolutely no room for any other relationship that normal dude-bro friends or boyfriends who have sex, often. Like no, please, there are so many other ways people can love each others, and every single way is beautiful in its own right. Do I believe Jimin and Jungkook are in love ? A little. Yes. Because they definitely go past the barriers that I know. But does that mean they are regular boyfriends? I don't know. Only they know. They are free to define their relationship in any way that pleases them. They are incredibly famous multi-millionnaires, so it makes me laugh when people think they can stand in their shoes and assume that they know exactly what they are for each other. No, you don't. Nobody but them knows. Nobody even realise how freaking busy they are (not until @wingzie made that beautiful timeline). They don't have a 9 to 5 factory or desk job. They have a life that nearly nobody on earth can relate to. And maybe even them have not yet defined exactly what they are to each other, or maybe they were waiting, or maybe things change and move around. There is no right or wrong way to have a relationship, as long as it's between consenting adults. It's so nice to have someone else from the aspec community over here <3.
Hi anon!
It's so lovely to hear your thoughts as well. I completely understand everything you're saying here. It's something that's been building up for me for a while here. I spend absolutely no time engaging in other social media spaces for BTS content. I dipped my toes into those waters and there just wasn't enough space for nuance for me. But here in cooky little tumblr land, there's at least a tiny fraction of a place where I feel these conversations can actually be held.
Frankly, I do like spending time sharing in the joy that I see in the member's relationships. There are some absolutely wonderful moments of humanity to which we're privy. If I could improve one thing though it'd definitely be for people to focus more on the joy-sharing and celebrations rather than the fanwars and competitions.
Anyway, thank you for sending this in! It's so lovely to know I'm not completely alone in these views.
So this anon is really troubling me but not for the regular jikook-shipper reasons. If you're up for a nuanced discussion, continue through the cut. If you're looking for a stage to battle, I'd recommend passing on by. I'll only engage with good-faith responses.
I want to make something very clear in my teeny little corner of our fandom. We can debate whichever ship is real and which member's are closer to eachother forever. These arguments can get into fairly childish statements of stacking human relationships into a competition but if that's how you want your fandom experience to be, you do you, I guess.
The point I would invite y'all to consider when taking an approach like the above anon is to remember that action does not equal attraction. In other words, just because a person does something, does NOT automatically mean they feel a certain way about it. It could, it very well could. But it's not a given.
I'm particularly sensitive to the viewpoint of people trying to call others homophobic for not seeing an action a certain way. Yes, that is definitely a huge part of society's issues currently but not every misalignment of interpretation equates to homophobia.
Never in any of my fandoms before have I struggled so much with feeling pushed out as an aspec than i have once I found kpop. I believe it's largely due to the focus of shipping spaces having this weird honor system of needing to gather evidence and prove that yours is 'the one true ship'. It's putting people in this space where they are treating every piece of content like the old land rushes of early colonization. Instead of settlers racing to establish homesteads, it's shippers racing to build narratives.
I don't have a conclusion to this post other than to invite y'all to remember that even here on tumblr, in our relatively open corner of the internet, there is some work to be done to be inclusive.
For any of you that are interested in discussing more about the viewpoints of aspecs in kpop spaces, I invite you to check out @aspec-kpop .
You casting doubt or saying they could have had other relationships is not the flex you think it is. In all seriousness that is highly unlikely given their consistent behaviour around each other for years now, at least since 2017, ain’t no way they were dating others. It’s actually quite homophobic what you are insinuating again with the video of Jk, there is not a straight bone most likely in that man’s body. He is all about Jimin, all the time, you only have to watch his habits and lives to see that. There is no room for anyone else. If you can’t see that fine but stop clogging the tag with your homophobic opinions. They also were not on a break, their relationship is private and not for us, or the public. We don’t live under their bed for sure, but you only have to look at them, how they act, how they were, how they spoke about each other, the shared concepts, the travel show, the enlistment. Just know you’re wrong to cast doubt and it’s erasing them and what they are showing is by doing so. It’s not about being rational, it’s literally erasure.
Block me then.
I can’t with these fucking anons picking and choosing when it comes to what I write about.
Me casting doubt is wrong? If my opinion is casting doubt on you, then I would question how easily influenced you are.
You say that we don’t know about their private lives and yet, are 100% convinced he’s been in a long-term romantic relationship with jm.
‘There is no room for anyone else’, ‘ain’t no way they were dating others’. Sure, and you know this cause you’re such a bystander who isn’t privy to their private lives?
I was there in 2017. I was there when gcf dropped. I love them beyond anything so to insinuate that I’m being homophobic towards them is so fucking disrespectful. All because I said that they might not be dating. Get a grip.
I knew there were plenty of examples of members monitoring their footage like this. I stumbled across one tonight.
Check out this BTS episode:
This is from a 2019 KBS performance so BTS's crew likely wouldnt have access to the raw footage at all. To allow the members to review their footage, they have their own camera recording a monitor. Then we see members watching back their performance on a few different phones. This is what leads me to believe they have a standard practice of uploading performance footage somewhere they can access for quick review.
I grabbed a couple of screen records:

On a complete sidenote, I love finding little gems like this. It seems Like Crazy was a premonition from clear back in 2019! Hobi should get credit for it! 🤣🤣🤣

hey, i was curious about something from ep 6. jimin talks about filming with the kids for sgmb, and jungkook says he saw the video. but sgmb was filmed the day before they left for tokyo, and their conversation was just a few days after that. there’s no way the finished product was done by then, right? (especially considering that music video wasn’t scheduled to come out for many months) can we assume jungkook is talking about some other video of jimin and the kids or maybe some raw footage? the timeline is just interesting to me!
Hi anon,
While there's really no way for us to know, I do have a couple of suspicions. But first, I would always recommend if any specific wording seems to stick with you abut anything the members say, please remember that they do speak in a language that often doesn't have a 1:1 translation to English. I don't have anyone to point you at since I don't spend any time in BTS social media outside of tumblr but I believe there are some army translators out there that can corroborate the translations.
Now, onto the video in question. There are a couple of hints I've gleaned over the years regarding BTS's work process and access to monitoring their own footage. In case you're not aware, the raw data on the big ol' fancy cameras is quite large and it takes some doing to get that data moved to here it needs to be for editing.
But we all know how involved BTS is with monitoring their own content after most takes. How many times do we see 3J asking for one more take in that Butter dance practice?? So we know they will utilize the monitor station to review directly after takes. But I've seen them point a lower quality camera at one of those monitors and watch the output later. You can see this type of footage in the SGMB shooting sketch as well. Here's a quick bit:

We see the entire cast gathered around a monitor but then it cuts to a camera recording the monitor. That means there is a person pointing a camera at the monitor itself. My theory is this extra footage is uploaded to some shared location for ease of review while the actual footage takes whatever time it requires to properly manage the quality. I would also assume that all of the members have access to this shared space to review whatever they'd like.
All just theories though. I know there are a few of you that have reached out to me who actually work in film and I'd be curious to know if this sounds realistic or not.
Age is a huge factor as well. There's n indication in the survey breakdown of the spread. It says the ages were 16-74 but that could mean there were 999 ppl in their 70s and one 16 year old that answered. Obviously the younger generations have had more societal freedom to explore these concepts enough to even consider applying any non-traditional labels.
Again, data is a tool that requires some knowledge to apply. Just grabbing any random statistic and stating that the results are representative does not help your cause. There could very well be some data that supports anons conclusion but it definitely wasn't that one.
If 3% of 100 people in Korea are lgbt, in a group of 7 people, how many of them might be lgbt?
3%×7=0.03×7=0.21
So about 0.21 people in the group might be lgbt. It's likely that 0 people in the group would be lgbt. Proportion says no member of BTS is lgbt, probably!
Ay bo, now you're turning to maths for what? To prove that Jikook isn’t real or can’t be real? Mate, all you’ve got to do is say you don’t think they’re a couple and move on! Get on with your lives and let us be happy! Honestly, que flojera con ustedes.
Seriously, y'all I can't believe it's been a year. This was just a passing idea I had that I assumed already existed on tumblr and when I couldn't find one, decided to just make it myself.
It's the one year anniversary of this blog!
Thank you to everyone that's been a part of this! I may have made some mistakes along the way but I'm happy to say I never missed a day!

In honor of this momentous occasion, I have a gift for y'all, but you gotta answer today's poll question first!
My gift to you is a new blog: @bts-trivia
Unlike here, where the polls are completely subjective, the questions there do have correct answers that will be posted in the reblogs once the poll closes. Head on over to test your expertise!

LAST CALL: What is your initial ranking of Neva Play?

I have an announcement to make! In honour of the one year anniversary of @bts-polls , I'm opening another side blog!
Genuinely don't know how this will go running two daily poll blogs but I've been wanting to do this other one for quite some time now and decided to just see what happens.
Thank you to everyone who has been voting in my silly polls, now let's see how y'all do when there is a correct answer!
It's trivia time!
Time to put your Bangtan knowledge to the test! Who thinks they've got what it takes?

Unlike @bts-polls , the polls here do have a correct answer which will be posted in the reblogs once the poll closes.
There are no prizes and tumblr polls are completely anonymous so there's no benefit to cheating by looking it up before you answer. Challenge yourself to determine the true expanse of your BTS expertise!
I'll rank each poll with my subjective difficulty ranking in the tags. Also I am a mere human so if by chance I do post an incorrect answer, please let me know. I just ask that you also include a link to the source.

Anon, if you're going to quote statistics, let's use the correct ones.
The 3% was just for bisexuality, the survey only allowed one selection and bisexuality was a separate category from the others, bringing the total for lgbtq to 6%.
This was an online survey to only 1000 respondents between 16-74 years old and was open from 17 Feb - 3 Mar 2023.
It doesn't take a data analytics expert to conclude that number is not a good representation to be translated to an entire population. There was no location data reported either. For all we know, the respondents were all people on a military base, or stuck in the airport on a layover, or coming out of a session of conversion therapy.
Statistics without context are nearly meaningless.

I know we're all excited for the next episode of AYS but I'd just like to remind y'all of what happened the last time we had footage of our members at a hot spring.
Reminded? Okay, be prepared!

😏🤭
Hey, from a production stand point, do you think Jimin and Jungkook had control of the cameras in the hotel rooms? Ie at bedtime? thanks
Hi anon,
I don't think you're going to like my answer but honestly, there's really no way for us to know and I don't really see the point in speculating either. This would come down to the agreement they each have as talent with their company.
I will say no matter what the reality of the situation is, there is some PR benefit for playing with the line of how much control there is. But that's all spin according to whatever narrative is needed at the time.
In summary: I don't know and I have nothing really to say. A clever edit can easily make it seem as though either end of the spectrum is true.
Sorry,
Good fodder for fanfic but not really up my alley for a breakdown.

i think hybe uses their own crew for probably most things. then they gather all the footage and distribute it to the teams or companies that manage each project. movies, docuseries, shows, behind the scenes etc etc
I don't think I explained myself well on that post as I've had additional chats with a few of you about this. Thanks for sending this in anon! I'll compile what I've been discussing with some of you in messages so if this sounds familiar, it's probably from a chat you have with me.
The reason the inclusion of this footage sticks out to me is because the final product was NOT a hybe-only release. There were other companies involved in both AYS and JKs documentary. AYS being distributed by Disney and Jks doc by Trafalgar Releases. The BTS production machine previously handled pretty much everything in-house.
The all-in-house methodology must have lasted pretty far into the AYS project though for this specific footage to be shared between them.
It helps us fill in some of the gaps about what the Disney deal might have entailed. With as proprietary as Disney famously is, if they'd been involved in the project from the beginning, there would have been more barriers to cross-project sharing.
Hopefully, that helps explain why I was so thrown by the footage. It's definitely been status quo for past BTS projects, but these ones involving other companies could have disrupted that practice.
Huge thanks to @jimin-bangtan for pointing me at the more correct post. I'll re-include the same reminder from before (that I obviously should have heeded the first time, what a perfect reminder!)
Friendly reminder to anyone that may see this in the reblogs, tumblr doesn't resync posts to the original so please make sure you navigate to the original post for any edits made by op in the future!

I agree, I think the main character was always meant to be their relationship. I think when they were planning the show that must have been a discussion, because it would be self-evident once they were traveling together, same as it came out so strongly when they were in BV3 and walking around together. Obviously the jeju episodes were hijacked so to speak (but imo mostly served to show us the incredibly intimate bond Jikook share), but yes, the main character is that, it is meant to show us them, as they are. They said this too in their first intro.
I also think it was a way for JM to make up to JK for his busy period, and spend quality time being free to travel together. They obviously say that to open the show, so it is not a reach. But, it is more than that, I think he truly does care about JK and his happiness. He also says that a few times in jeju and in Sapporo so far, as long as JK is happy, that is what mattered, and I am like that in my relationship. It truly shows how much they both care for each other.
I love that in episode 6, all they really do is check into their hotel, eat snacks, go to a 7/11, eat more, talk, go to bed. Then JM is there calling JK into the bathroom to take a selfie because 'they made memories here'. it is so sweet, because really all I think he is referring to is them being together, enjoying the normal/mundane things. Then they go on to do more of that, walking the snowy streets to go find food, coffee and ride a train. Things a lot of us will take for granted, often complain about probably. I know they had a lot of staff to protect them/look out for their wellbeing, but we have. to remember they are used to that, and so for them, it is just being out and about on a normal day, doing normal things, together.
Hi anon,
I'd definitely be interested to learn a little more about the scope of AYS and how it developed. I've still been thinking about the idea of the relationships as the main character and how that could have developed throughout the production. It's been a while since I've watched Bon Voyage but I don't think the same could be said there. BV is absolutely modeled after typical travel shows where the journey/destination becomes the chief focus.
I do think there was space for the Jeju eps to open the focus to all three members' relationships and I do believe it was mostly successful. It's one of the reasons why all of the pool segments didn't feel repetitive, there was a different mixture of members each time: taekook, jikook, vminkook. Even though they recreated some of the same bits in each subsequent scene, they weren't cut our of the edit because it didn't feel like repeat moments due to the changing dynamics and thus fulfilling the goal of exploring the differing relationships.
On a complete sidenote, while we're sharing lovely bursts of joy from ep 6, let me share mine about the memories moments as well. I have a family history of memory loss-related illnesses so I've always been hyperaware of my own shortcomings with my memory and made my peace with the likelihood that I will have my own journey on that path as well. There was a phrase I heard years ago that has given me a lot of comfort: our character has still been influenced by those we love even if we lose the memories associated with them.
This episode spending so much time talking about making memories in such a sweet way just reminds me how much Jimin and Jungkook want to have eachother influence their character. They have so many extraordinary events in their lives and while they may not remember the exact day-to-day detail, they have absolutely helped shape the other's character. I just think it's especially lovely.

hey, i was curious about something from ep 6. jimin talks about filming with the kids for sgmb, and jungkook says he saw the video. but sgmb was filmed the day before they left for tokyo, and their conversation was just a few days after that. there’s no way the finished product was done by then, right? All just theories though. I know there are a few of you that have reached out to me who actually work in film and I'd be curious to know if this sounds realistic or not.

Episodes 5 & 6 Notes
It was very fortuitous that I've been so busy over the last couple of weeks as I really needed both of these episodes together to make sense of my thoughts. This post is definitely far more conceptual than my last ones so if you're up for it, click on though the cut!

AYS's Main Character?

I would like to propose that AYS has a main character OTHER than the individual humans we're following along on screen. (I warned you, this post was going to be conceptual.) And the main character is the relationship itself, how each of the members relate to one another.
Here's Google's AI overview on what this concept means:
A story can center on the relationship between characters as the primary protagonist, with the dynamic and evolution of that connection acting as the main driving force of the narrative, rather than the individual characters themselves.
Key points to consider:
Relationship-centric stories: Many genres, particularly romance, often focus heavily on the relationship between the main characters, exploring its complexities, challenges, and growth throughout the story.
No single protagonist: In such cases, the "character" is the bond between the individuals, not just one person's perspective or journey.
Exploring the dynamic: The narrative would then focus on how the relationship changes, adapts, and reacts to external situations or internal conflicts.
Examples:
"Before Sunrise": The entire plot revolves around the single night encounter between two strangers, with the developing connection being the central focus.
"Brokeback Mountain": The story primarily explores the forbidden love between two cowboys, highlighting the complexities of their relationship in a restrictive environment.
"Steel Magnolias ": A group of girls in a small town in Louisiana experience grief together, including weddings, fatal illnesses, and the loss of loved ones.
Now before anyone comes for me saying I'm just pitching an argument for xyz fanwar, please note that I included the above just to illustrate the concept of a non-person main character rather than stating any of the above are comparisons to the individual member's relationships. We're talking about a show that was produced and distributed for entertainment, nothing further.
Episode 5

My main feeling after finally being able to watch episode 5 was overall unsettled. There was something sticking with me about that episode and I could NOT figure out what it was.
I knew I was feeling like the entire episode was stretched well beyond what the footage wanted for a complete episode. I'm all for getting to spend more time with our fellas but the Jeju trip would have benefited from being cut down to 2 episodes rather than 3, in my opinion.
There was just a whole lotta nothing happening. The guys eat, travel around a little bit, and eat some more. I had some vague thoughts about how I could quantify some data for y'all to explain this point but then it was time for the next episode...
vs. Episode 6

And what an absolutely lovely breath of fresh air this episode was. I know there have been some Run eps that I review with a smile on my face throughout the whole episode but AYS6?? That was 73 minutes of pure bliss.
So I started thinking about what must be different between the two eps. The guys eat, travel around a little bit, and eat some more...wait, that's exactly what I said about ep 5! Lol
But I think the main difference between the two is episode 6's plot points continually focus on the relationships between the members, while 5 falls a little stagnant.
Some examples:
JM/cat & JK/dog. I'm ALWAYS down for more footage of BTS with pets but this is frankly too much time spent on these scenes. It's honestly footage I would have expected in the bonus content instead of the main product. It's not just an establishing beat or a setup for a callback, this is supposed to be a scene but since it doesn't contribute to the journey of the main character aka the relationships. It could maaaybe work if they'd cut it to highlight the juxtaposition of how JM is calm with the cat vs JKs energy with the dog but that would have shortened the time it occupied and they were clearly trying to keep absolutely everything in that would lengthen the episode.
JKs stew. The ONLY thing that ties this plot point into the narrative of this show (other than it happening while he's in Jeju and Jimin is nearby) is the offhand comment he made that Jimin would like it while he was in NY. I'm going to talk more about this footage below but this was absolutely crucial for this whole beat making it into the episode. This is also why the footage of JM eating it and randomly taking off his shirt was kept in. The cut they chose is actually pretty bad story-wise but they used it anyway. We hear JM saying how much he loves it and how glad he is that JK is a good cook. It ties all of this time we spent watching JK do something alone back into the real main character of the show (the members' relationships between eachother in different circumstances).
Anyway, I won't belabour the point any further. With Tae constantly disappearing from scenes and the slightly diminished lack of focus on the member's relationships, episode 5 left me on an odd note.
A Little Production Note

I was completely thrown by the footage of JK in NY that we got this episode. But not for the reasons you may be thinking. (I do wonder if the anon that was sending in asks about the financing behind the documentaries is still around because we're getting into some of tidbits finally.)
So, all along we've been trying to sus out as much as we can, just a few details about how AYS came to be. We've had some hints but the inclusion of this footage may be another indicator.
The facts as we know them:
AYS is distributed by Disney.
Jungkook's documentary is being distributed by Trafalgar Releasing NOT Disney (at least not now, maybe it'll make it onto streaming after cinematic release but who knows?)
Questions due to the footage of JK in NY:
Was this footage captured as part of JKs documentary?
If so, when was it pulled to be utilized for AYS? Did the editors find it or were the writers involved?
We know that HYBE gathers behind-the-scene content without always having a full plan of how it will be used. But there are times where it did seem intentional for a specific purpose. Where did JKs Golden footage fall in?
Once upon a time, production houses would make deals with distributors about quantities of projects that would be delivered. Was that the case with the Disney deal or has every single project been negotiated separately and we only heard about it once there was a confirmed quantity. Somewhere in the middle perhaps?
And that's all I've got to say for now. I do have some more thoughts about things I've gleaned during these last couple of episodes but it'll likely keep until the end.
Anyway, this footage bumped me because it broke the rules of cross-project production. They got away with it for JKs SEVEN footage in ep 1 because they likely were using the same production crew since it was literally the same day so it doesnt feel like they're'breaking the wall'. But the NY-Jeju crews could have been completely different.
Editing to add further clarification to this point in this ask.

On a sidenote, do y'all remember the last time we got footage of jikook in a hotspring?? I'll jog your memory if not, it was in BV:4 and they 'washed each other's faces'. I can't even imagine what we're about to see in episode 7.
