I always knew
That it was all so very fleeting
But I donât think
That it really ever set in
Until I was looking back
Searching for my footprints in the sand
Only to find that the tide had come and washed them away

Y/Nâs alarm finally went off. âOkayâ she told herself as she sat up and felt the sheets fall away from her body, âTime to conquer the day!â She said cheerily before beginning to stretch. or at least not let it conquer you, she thought and a frown came across her face, but only for a moment before she pushed that thought away and got out of bed. Y/N swayed into the bathroom, where she stopped to look at herself in the mirror. âHello, gorgeous!â She falsely chirped to her reflection. Nope, still donât believe it, but weâll try again tomorrow, she thought with a soft sigh before moving to turn on the shower. Y/N went to her closet to grab her uniform for today while the water warmed up for her. âComputerâ she called out into the room, âPlay my morning mix at 65% volume, pleaseâ she requested and the soft, but happy music began to play almost instantly. 65% seemed sort of oddly specific, but it was the perfect volume, it wasnât deafening, but she would still be able to hear it when she got under the running water. As soon as Y/N saw the steam coming from the shower she quickly stripped and tossed her pyjamas into the pale blue hamper before hopping into the shower. âA dream is a wish your heart makesâŚâ Y/N trailed off as she squeezed lavender shampoo into her hand. She continued singing as she scrubbed the product into her scalp. Once Y/N had finished washing up, she turned off the hot water with a refreshed sigh. Her stomach growled as she reached for her towel, âOh, dear me!â Y/N exclaimed softly and continued to hurry to dry off and get dressed. âComputer, please stop my musicâ Y/N asked in a bubbly tone before almost skipping out the down and down the hall to the turbo lift. âMess deckâ Y/N called out lightly when she got into the turbo lift. âOh, hi!â Y/N greeted when Uhura stepped into the turbo lift with her. âGood morning, Y/Nâ Uhura said through a stifled yawn. âHow are you so awake this early?â She asked, stretching as best she could in her uniform. âEasy, there was some loose nut down the hall who was screaming about a half an hour before my alarm went off, so Iâve been awake since then,â Y/N rambled on in the closest thing to an angry that Uhura had heard from her in all the time theyâd been friends. âReally, I didnât hear it, I must of been sleeping too hardâ Uhura laughed it off in the hopes that the sound would lighten the admittedly fairly light mood. âAnywayâ Uhura began changing the subject, âDo you have anything fun planned down in the botany lab for today?â She asked with an intent smile. âYeah actually!â Y/N wiggled a bit as she said it, âWe picked up this really pretty pink and blue flower, and when I say pink and blue I mean you have to come see it after breakfast! Itâs like⌠Cotton candy pink and blue!â Y/N exclaimed. âAnd you know whatâs even crazier?!?â Y/N asked rhetorically, âIt smells just like cotton candy too!!â She said waving her hands for more effect. âReally?!?â Uhura asked, âWill you show me after we eat, weâll have to be quick so I can still be on time but I need to see that!â Uhura rushed just as the turbo lift door opened up to reveal the mess deck. âOf course itâs really amazing!â Y/N agreed as they stepped out into the mess deck. âWhat about you, Uhura?â Y/N asked her in return, âNothing reall, I donât have the kind of position that you make plans for. Iâm going to go up to the bridge and follow orders,â She said with a smile. Y/N and Uhura continued to chatter as they walked up to the replicators. With a dull thud, Y/N ran directly into someoneâs chest. âOh Iâm sorry!â Y/N exclaimed, âOhâ she finally looked up at a rather stern looking man in medical uniform. âNo, no, it takes two to tangoâ The man said in something that resembled an apology, but still looked rather annoyed that the interaction was taking place at all. âOh, okayâ Y/N said in quiet acceptance before skittering away without her breakfast. Uhura gave the man a short glare before following behind her.
Leonard grumbled on his way out the door. He met with Kirk on his way down the hall. Not mad at him, not mad at him, not-, âDid you really need to wake me up with that?â Leonard did his best not to sound angry, but he was failing miserably. âYou donât need to rip me to shreds so early in the dayâ Kirk defended himself, putting his hands up momentarily as his stride slowed to keep pace with Leonard. âFineâ He muttered, making a motion his arms that seemed to indicate him physically letting go of his anger. âAlright, good, letâs chowâ Kirk encouraged and began walking faster to the mess deck. âRace you there!â Kirk shouted, leaving Leonard behind. âI am not doing that!â Leonard yelled back and kept his own pace the rest of the way up to the mess deck. Iâm done with this day already, I havenât even been into medbay, good god, he thought as he came up on the mess entryway, where Kirk was waiting for him. âAh, you made it!â Kirk exclaimed in exaggerated relief. âAlright, so give me all the details on this rooming thingâ Leonard ordered in an actually exasperated manner. âWell, what do you wanna know?â Kirk prompted, âWhere is this Y/N girlâs quarters?â He asked a bit distracted, as he was trying to navigate the breakfast crowd while also side eyeing Jim. âWell I dunno, but-,â Kirk was interrupted by a thud and looked over just in time to see a timid looking science officer, flustered and apologising. âOh, Iâm sorry!â The girl was quick to amend, Jim smirked a little as he saw Leonard looking down at her a little longer than he would normally. Usually he would move past these kinds of people without further regard, and just mutter to himself angrily about how nobody paid any attention these days. Leonard did something entirely different though, âNo, no, it takes two to tango,â he had stated, without any real sincerity in his tone, but the fact that he bothered to say something at all was enough for Kirk to raise an eyebrow. âOhâ the girl said in embarrassment and then scurried off as quickly as she had appeared.
âOoh, you like her, donât you?â Kirk jabbed as he dug an elbow into Leonardâs ribs. âNo, I was just being polite to a girl who clearly wasnât in need of more abuseâ He hissed in a low tone, âAnd if you would keep from making your elbow too chummy with my ribs, thatâd be greatâ Leonard gritted. Poor girl, she seemed so scared, I admit Iâm not the friendliest face this early in the morning, or ever really, but she seemed⌠I dunno, frightened that Iâd hit her or something. Leonard furrowed his brow at the thought, but was quickly pulled away by the icy look Uhura gave him. His eyes widened only a little before he returned his attention to Jim. â- and then I got hit with a phaserâ Kirk explained while pulling his hand into his gut as if to demonstrate the phaserâs impact on him. âWhat?!?â Leonard asked in alarm, âI knew you werenât listening to meâ Jim whined as he lightly hit Leonardâs shoulder. âI was just thinkinâ, thaâs all'' He responded, âYeahâ Jim snorted, âThinking about the way that girlâs body felt against yours?â Kirk jabbed as he punched in some orders for the replicator in front of him. Admittedly that thought had briefly crossed his mind, but it was extremely brief, not worth mentioning really. âNo, I was just thinking about the fact that I donât know where this Y/Nâs quarters are to be able to break the news to her that weâre rooming togetherâ Leonard corrected in a reprimanding voice. âAh, well, about that. Iâm not actually sureâ Jim paused slightly at the pointed look that he was being given by Leonard, âbut,â He emphasised before continuing on, âI will check files after breakfast and get that information to you as soon as possibleâ Kirk explained while waiting for Leonard to get his food. âYouâd betterâ Leonard grumbled, âYou know, you should really work on speaking up or people wonât be sure if youâre talking to them or yourself,â Jim pretended to lecture, âAnd you should really work on not being an assâ Leonard bit back as he grabbed his tray and they went to find a place to sit. The two ate breakfast together without much in the way of real conversation, just the occasional comment on what they would be doing today. When Leonard finished his breakfast, which he knew was less than it should have been, he said goodbye to Jim and headed to the medbay to see what todayâs damage was.
Y/N and Uhura sat quietly for a few moments, out of sight of the replicators. Uhura finally broke their little bubble of silence, âAre you alright? Bones can kind of be an asshole, and generally in a foul moodâ She smiled, trying to encourage Y/N to do the same from within her newly acquired air of gloom. âYeah, he just scared me,â Y/N replied in a small voice. âLook they arenât at the replicators anymore if you still want some foodâ Uhura cheered, pointing in the direction of the, now mostly deserted replicators.
âOkayâ Y/N smiled weakly as she stood. They walked to the replicators, where Uhura picked out some fruit and oatmeal, Y/N had picked a cookie and some fruit of her own. âSooo,â Uhura drawled, âDid I see you blush?â She prodded with a raised eyebrow. âYes, but Iâm allowed to be embarrassed when I run into strangersâ Y/N defended, âAlright,â Uhura gave in as they took their seats.

Dr. McCoy came in the door behind Y/N and put down his boxes as well. âWhere should I put my things, darlin?â He asked looking down at his boxes. Thereâs that darlin again, âWell, Iâm not sure whatâs in the other boxes, but we can push some stuff back in the closet and you could hang your clothes up in there,â Y/N suggested, âThe other two boxes are paperwork and files is all, they might as well stay in the boxes for now,â Dr. McCoy explained with a hand on his hip. Y/N went over to the closet and began to push some of her own things to the side and pulling things she didnât wear often off the hangers and folding them up so she could switch them out for Dr. McCoyâs clothes. âOkayâ Y/N called from within the closet, âThereâs room now, if you wanna hand me your clothes Iâll start putting them on hangers,â She said, holding out a hand expectantly. He began to hand her clothes: shirt, shirt, shirt, shirt, shirt, shirt, shirt, all uniform shirts. Pants, pants, pants, pants, pants, pants, pants, all uniform as well. Nightgown, nightgown, nightgown, nightgown, nightgown, nightgown, nightgown, all plain white. Y/N held her hand out again for a moment before pinching her fingers together and making a grabby hand, âIs that all Dr. McCoy?â She questioned tiredly. âYou can call me Leonard and yes it is,â Leonard told her, placing a hand on her shoulder. âOkay, Leonard. If you wanna get into your pyjamas for bed, Iâll make some tea while you change, if you want some of course,â she offered, holding out one of his nightgowns. âThatâd be great, Iâll have mine with lemon,â Leonard requested. He took the nightgown from Y/Nâs hand and mosied on into the bathroom to change. Y/N half tumbled into the kitchen and filled the kettle with water and put it on to boil. Normally she would wash up her face while the water boiled, but Leonard was in the bathroom at the moment so instead Y/N picked up her own folded clothes and put them in the box that Leonardâs things had come in. âSo,â Leonard came out of the bathroom in his own plain nightgown. âIt just occurred to me, should we try to move my bed in here tonight, or should I take my clothes for tomorrow and go sleep in my own quarters?â He offered the two options. âWell,â Y/N seemed to be considering her next words very carefully. âI could sleep on the couch, and you could sleep in the bed. That way we wouldnât have to do any work on it until tomorrow,â Y/N fumbled with the suggestion. âThatâs a sweet offer, darlin, but I couldnât make you sleep on the couch,â Leonard admitted. âThen weâll both sleep on the bed,â Y/N stated innocently without thinking about what she was really saying. That was so stupid, so you have any idea what that sounds like?, Y/N internally scold herself for the comment.
âThen weâll both sleep on the bed,â She had said it like it wasnât a big deal, and maybe to her it wasnât. Regardless of how she felt about sharing a bed, they both remained in silence from their respective places for a long moment. Leonard finally cut into the silence, âI dunno, do you steal bedding in your sleep?â He asked lightheartedly. âI wouldnât know,â Y/N confessed to him with a slight shrug. âBut if I do, thereâs extra blankets and stuff in the bottom drawer of the dresser,â Y/N proposed as compensation for any sleep thefts she might commit. âAlright then, I call dibs on the left side,â He cheered, trying to push his own ill at ease feelings to the side for the time being. Thereâs no way this can end-, his thoughts were cut short by the kettle. âThatâll be tea,â Y/N perked up and stated, seemingly more out of habit than actual concern that Leonard might not know what the whistling sound meant. âWhat kind do you want?â She asked as she scrambled into the kitchen to take the kettle off of the heat. âWhat kind do you have?â He shot back in a form of noncommittal answer. Leonard could hear the shuffling of small paper packets before her answer, âChamomile, mint, chamomile-lavender, mint-lavender, and radiantly raspberry,â Y/N rattled off the list, âRadiantly Raspberry?â He asked with a raised eyebrow. âI dunno, Iâm not in charge of naming them, itâs raspberry, take it or leave it,â She followed the ultimatum with a small giggle, that Leonard swears he would have missed if he blinked.
âAlright, darlin, Iâll take the chamomile,â His statement was promptly followed by a small tearing sound from the kitchen. maybe havin a roommate wonât be such a terrible thing, Leonard thought to himself as his eyes followed Y/N as she walked out of the kitchen in her cloud white nightgown with her hair out of her face, a mug of tea in each hand. âYouâll have to let it cool awhile,â Y/N warned through a cloud of steam, her usually quiet tone even softer as she handed him his requested tea. Leonard watched the steam rising from the mug and felt the heat radiate from it and seep into his hands. âThank you,â He drawled, still looking at the steam, âItâs not a problem,â Y/N assures him as she puts down her mug and reaches for a book. Y/N flips through the pages intently before finally settling on a page, she sticks her thumb in between the pages and lets the book fall closed as she comes to sit down next to Leonard on the couch. When she lands on the couch she curls her legs under herself and nestles herself further into the couch, seemingly unaware of his gaze tracking her movements the whole time. Y/N opens up the book again and a look of complete and utter, inner peace melts her previously nervous posture and facial expression. I wonder what she could possibly be reading, Leonard does his best to discreetly catch sight of the title or even just the words on the page, but the way sheâs almost protectively curled herself around the book doesnât lend itself well to his attempts. âWhat are you reading?â He finally asks with a curious look. Y/N looks up at him in near shock at the question, she relaxes a little, but still hesitates before opening her mouth to speak. âRobert Frost,â She says quietly, looking back down at her book. âI think Iâve heard of him, something about two roads,â Leonard tried to relate, âDiverged into a yellow wood,â Y/N murmured, finishing the line. âWhat was that?â He asked, genuinely not having heard what she said. âThe poem youâre thinking of,â She began, âThe Road Not Taken, is what itâs called,â She only looked up at him for a flicker of a moment, âYeah, that sounds right,â He admitted, still searching his memory for anything he might know about it, but nothing came to mind.
âWould you read it to me?â Leonard asked, âI canât actually remember any of it,â He explained himself. She looked to him with a demure smile, âTwo roads diverged in a yellow wood, and sorry I could not travel both and be one traveller, long I stood and looked down one as far as I could,â Y/N started not having looked back at her book, but keeping her eyes trained on her cup of tea. âTo where it bent in the undergrowth; then took the other, just as fair and having perhaps the better claim, because it was grassy and wanted wear; though as for that the passing there had worn them really about the same, and both that morning equally lay in leaves no step had trodden black.â Y/N looked to him now, âOh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh somewhere ages and ages hence: two roads diverged in a wood, and Iâ I took the one less travelled by, and that has made all the difference.â âWow,â Leonard started, âI donât think I could remember all that,â He said in what he meant as a compliment to her. âItâs easy,â Y/N said, still looking at Leonard. I think this might be the longest sheâs actually looked at me, âYou read it because you love it, at first you can only recall bits and pieces when you arenât focused on anything else,â She interrupted his thoughts. âThen you wake up one day, distant from where you started, and you can remember all of it without thinking, you can recite it while doing other things. One day when you really know it, you can think and feel how each word feels on your tongue without even saying any of it.â She finished thoughtfully, Leonard wasnât sure she was talking to him so much as she might have been talking to herself. âVery poetic,â Leonard commented softly, trying not to scare her out of her daze. âOh, thank you,â She exclaimed softly, appearing to remember that she was actually talking to someone. âJust loose thoughts,â She dismissed her own outburst of poeticism as nothing. âNo, it was very nice, where did you learn it?â He asked Y/N, âNowhere really, I just sort of thought it,â She shrugged to herself. âWell, I thought it was a very- I donât know, but it was filled with feeling, like you meant it,â Leonard seemed to be forming the thought as he spoke. âYou seem surprised by that,â Y/N murmured with a light blush before taking a sip of the tea, Leonard reached for his own forgotten mug of tea, âSincerity isnât something thereâs a lot of in the universe,â He said with his own shrug as he drank his tea.
His eyebrows furrowed at the taste, âIs it alright, I can go make you something different?â Y/N tried to reach for the mug, but Leonard pulled it back from her reach and drank the rest of it before she could get to it. âNo, itâs fine really,â Leonard insisted, âJust a little heavy on the lemon,â He conceded and put the mug back on the table. âYou should finish up your tea and weâll go to bed,â Leonard suggested, moving to put his own mug back in the sink, when he came back he offered to take hers as well. âOkay,â Y/N agreed, waiting for him to come back from the kitchen and then leading him back to the bedroom. She stood shakily in the doorway as he went ahead of her, Leonard looked back at her, âUnless youâre gonna sleep standing up, you should probably come in,â he smiled comfortingly. Y/N timidly walked into the room, waiting for Leonard to take his place first. When he realised what she was waiting for he got into bed on the left side and worked his way under the covers. Y/N waited for Leonard to settle and then slowly came up to the right side of the bed and got in as well, laying as close to the edge as possible. âYou can lay further in on the bed, right now if you breathe funny youâll fall off,â Leonard assured her. Y/N nestled a few inches closer to the middle of the bed, still being sure to give him as much space as she could reasonably manage. âSweet dreams,â Leonard said, turning off the light, âGoodnight,â Y/N returned the sentiment and rolled over onto her side. They both laid awake, vividly aware of the other laying next to them. Eventually an uneasy sleep overtook them both.
