summary: in which you call joshua to let him know you got home safely

a/n: i watched (1) tik tok, blinked, and suddenly this drabble was written out in front of me. i’ve also been reading “our violent ends” by chloe gong so there is a lot of angst building up inside of me because of this 

Three rings was all it took for Joshua to answer. He’d always been fast when it came to answering your calls.

“Y/N? Is something wrong?” he asked, a smile appearing on your lips at the sound of his voice. 

“Nothing’s wrong,” you reassured, moving to sit on the ground in front of your couch. You rested your head back on the cushion. 

“Oh. Did you need to tell me something?”

“I went out drinking with my friends tonight. I had a few shots and had them call me a cab. I’m back home now,” you told him, staring up at the ceiling. There was a sticky toy stuck on the ceiling, courtesy of Joshua himself, who had gotten the toy for free from some old lady in your building. He ended up throwing it too high one day, causing it to get stuck on the ceiling for months. 

Joshua’s silent, you noticed. 

“Did you drink tonight?” you questioned, curious about his lack of words. 

“No, I didn’t.” His answer was short. Not usual for the man who could spend hours talking to you about nothing. 

“That’s good. At least one of us will remember this conversation, then,” you joked, a small chuckle escaping your lips afterward. 

The call went silent again. On the other line, you could hear Joshua sigh, mumbling something away from the phone before you heard a door close.

“Are you with someone?” you asked. 

“Just the guys,” he answered. “Listen, Y/N…”

“I could come over, if you wanted. I haven’t seen the guys in a while. Only Mingyu, because he’s dating my friend but—“

“Y/N.”

“They’re still going strong. It’s crazy. I thought they were complete opposites, and that they wouldn’t work out, but they managed—“

“Y/N. We broke up, remember?”

His words silenced you quicker than you liked. 

“Y/N?”

You allowed another few beats of silence to pass before you answered. 

“Yes?”

“You don’t need to keep calling me to tell me you got home.”

It was then you felt the tears falling down your cheeks. It seemed like you’ve been crying for a while, you noticed, glancing down to find wet spots staining your jeans. You quickly wiped at your tears.

“Joshua…”

“Please, Y/N,” he whispered. His voice was weak, almost as if he was trying not to cry. “You ended this, so please, just let it end. You can’t keep torturing me like this… giving me hope with every call you make.” You heard him choke back a sob. you found you were doing the same.

“I’m sorry…”

“I’m sorry too.”

“You have nothing to be sorry for,” you mumbled. You heard Joshua whimper, then curse to himself.

“I have to go. The boys will wonder what’s up.”

“Of course. Have fun—“

“Don’t call again, please.”

With those final words, Joshua hung up the phone. Your hand moved away from your ear, dropping your phone to the ground with an abrupt smack. Just as you had left him, Joshua did the same to you tonight, leaving you to cry with the empty bottle of tequila beside you on the floor.

The sticky toy fell later that night, dropping to the ground with a small thump.

this has got to be one of my new favorite fics!!! i read this all last night and could not put it down even though it was 2am. i’ve had it on my list for a bit and i’m so so happy i got to read it. you took time with each part and it shows!! the reactions, the emotions, i was feeling all of them! you described everything a teenager feels so accurately and i couldn’t have loved that more!!! you tugged at my heartstrings the perfect amount and managed to make me laugh too :D i will be recommending this to all my carat friends and i know i will be rereading it again soon just to feel something once again 😌

You flipped to the next page of the plastic binder and squiggled a small ‘seven’ inside the margin. Then, your eyes wandered back to the math textbook sitting in between you and your best friend. It was difficult to study on Jennie’s bed, but she liked it that way, and there definitely wasn’t enough room at her desk.
