There was something satisfying about returning to the familiar. After weeks of having her life turned upside down, being in a training session with other knights and squires felt natural. Especially with the ones she’d grown up with. For an hour or two a day, everyone stopped looking at her as someone they didn’t recognize or someone who’d betrayed them. She was just Jade, the formidable opponent they’d always known. She’d always been much better at communicating with a blade anyway. She may not have been able to say “don’t fuck with me” out loud, but her sword could do it for her.

Her sparring partner was on the ground under her sword tip when Jade noticed Elora near the entrance of the palace. She couldn’t tell if this was a friendly visit or something important. Whatever it was, Jade’s training time was over. She helped her fellow knight to his feet before sheathing her weapon and approaching the young sorceress.

“What’s going on?” Jade asked. It wasn’t until Elora pushed a long curled strand of hair from the knight’s face that Jade even realized her hair had become a mess. She couldn’t even keep the bound updo she’d once been good at together. What a perfect visual of who Jade had become to the rest of the Pacalcade. She glanced over to the training men, noticing that their attention had now shifted to her and Elora. And now she was back, the girl they didn’t recognize anymore. “We should go in.”

Oh, she’s really hurt. She’s doing the thing where she’s holding herself, but makes it seem like she’s just crossing her arms. Jade knows Kit’s tells. This is one of her self-soothing methods. Jade won’t ever tell her she knows, though. Kit will never admit to it anyway, so there’s no use. Jade just has to find a way to soothe her. That’s all. Not hard… right?

Jade gently grabs the crook of Kit’s elbow, stepping closer. “You don’t have to lie to me, Kit. I’m sorry. I know it’s a big deal, with it being your sixteenth birthday and all. I promise, I’ll be at the feasts with you and you can tell me all the court gossip and crazy tourney stuff every night. I’ll even help you get ready tonight. And I’ll make it up to you. I don’t know how, yet, but I will.” She means it, too. She wants to make it up to her. Kit’s been excited about this for months now and Jade doesn’t want to ruin that.

ㅤㅤㅤkit is trying not to take it personally. it's to no avail, however, as her stomach continues to twist. she doesn't really have friends outside of jade, and the ones that are around tend to be more airk's friends than her own. so, seeing jade, hearing her say that she can't spend time with her... it hurts. order or not, it hurts.

ㅤㅤㅤone day. the fact that the time they could spend together has been relegated to one day sucks. no, not even one day. it's a maybe one day. it might not even happen. probably won't if ballantine has anything to say about it; the princess can't help but feel like the captain highly dislikes her. disapproves of her. folding arms across her chest, practically holding herself together so that jade doesn't see how much this feels like being left behind, kit forces herself to shrug.ㅤ❛❛ㅤdo what you want, i don't - i don't care.ㅤ❜❜

send  “  who  did  this  to  you  ?  ”  for  the  sender  to  find  the  receiver  injured  and  demand  to  know  who  did  it.

“When have you ever known me to let you suffer a fancy dinner alone?” Jade teases, nuzzling Kit’s nose. There have been several over the years that she hasn’t gone to, but because she wasn’t allowed. Otherwise, the knight was always at Kit’s side, suffering through formal wear. “Besides, you’re not the only one being celebrated, Princess. You, uh,” her fingers graze up Kit’s side before pulling her even closer, “planning to show off that cuirass you love so much?”

Jade smiles at Kit’s joy. This is what she wants forever. Just to make the woman in front of her smile, to make her happy. “I told you, I’ve loved you for quite some time. So much of what I’ve done, I’ve done for you,” she whispers. “The stupid gowns, all of our training, all of the nightmares, jumping off the edge of the world… even the Shining Legion. It’s because I love you.”

ㅤㅤㅤthe princess' head immediately shakes from side to side. a part of her wishes those days were left in the past. duties, appearances, decorum - she doesn't necessarily care about any of it. it doesn't feel like her life. it's someone else's. kit tanthalos is merely an imposter in her own title. ❛❛ㅤif i am to suffer this, you have to also. you know, solidarity, and mostly because i don't want to go but will if you are there.ㅤ❜❜

ㅤㅤㅤthis happiness, this type of comfort, has kit's heart racing, and it's not a high she ever wants to come down from. smiling widely as jade's thumb touches her lips, she can't help but steal some kisses in return. never going to get bored of that.ㅤ❛❛ㅤi'm holding you to that,ㅤ❜❜ㅤkit laughs. her next thought, however, is swift to sober such a noise. eyes even start to glisten as she locks jade's words in her memory forever.ㅤ❛❛ㅤthat's all i've ever wanted.ㅤ❜❜
