HERMIT A DAY MAY - DAY 29

Hypnotizd x Gargoyles

Minecraft youtuber Hypnotizd drawn as a gargoyle from Gargoyles. He is a gold colored gargoyle with blonde hair. Hypno is holding his real life fluffy white and light brown cat, Max, and smiling sweetly at him as he pets him. Above him and Max is Hypno's name in a pointy yellow font on a black background with a white outline around the entire word. The entire image is on a blue and purple gradient background.

For Hypno I chose the fantastic cartoon Gargoyles!

Hypno gives me cool 90s guy vibes and Gargoyles was my absolute favourite non-anime cartoon as a kid, so I had to include it! And, honestly, I just thought it'd be fun to draw Hypno as a gargoyle. I love the way he turned out.

To learn more about Gargoyles, one of the best cartoons ever, please continue below the cut!

@hermitadaymayrmit

(Congratulations on raising over $1000 for Gamers Outreach - lets keep going!)

The story of Gargoyles follows a group of warrior creatures called gargoyles who lived alongside and defended humans over 1000 years go. Despite acting as protectors, they were feared by humans and slaughtered in their sleep. The survivors of the massacre, a group of 5 men and their pet, were frozen in stone for eternity by a curse and doomed to never awaken again.

However, 1000 years in the future, an eccentric billionaire named Xanatos found a way to break the curse and brought the gargoyles back to life in modern Manhattan.

The story primarily follows the displaced gargoyles as they struggle to adjust to the shock of waking up in an unfamiliar future as the last members of their species.

While the show has plenty of action, as the gargoyles secretly protect the humans who live alongside them, the show is rather deep, often tackling nuanced issues like prejudice, mourning, and finding your identity in a culture that is not your own. Gargoyles also references a ton of mythology and literature and is arguably, in addition to the main plot with the gargoyles, an adaptation of multiple Shakespeare plays.

If you've never watched Gargoyles, I highly recommend it! It's one of the best serialized cartoons out there and I say that having also seen Avatar: the Last Airbender so you know I mean it.

Style references:

An intimidating light purple gargoyle named Goliath. Goliath is about like 7ft tall or something. As a gargoyle, he has large bat wings, clawed hands, pointed ears, horns on his head, a long kangaroo-like tail, and digitigrade feet with large, reptile like talons.

This is Goliath, the leader of the gargoyles and the a dual protagonist alongside his human love interest, Elisa Maza (who is one of my favourite female leads in anything ever). I would also like to add that Elisa is mixed race (Nigerian on her mother's side and indigenous, mostly Hopi, on her father's side) which was really unusual for a TV protagonist in the 90s. I just think that's cool, good job Gargoyles.

Goliath smiling lovingly at a human woman who is hugging him. The woman, Elisa, has dark hair and is wearing a red jacket. Her eyes are closed as she hugs Goliath and she is smiling as well. Goliath's large clawed hand is resting gently on her shoulder. They are standing together in a room that looks like an office at night.

Goliath and Elisa - I just wanted to show you how cute they are with each other. Love is real and you can find it with this detective lady and her 1000 year old Scottish bat creature friend.

The word Gargoyles in a pointy yellow font on a black background. The entire word is outlined in white. The entire title is on a slightly off white background.

HERMIT A DAY MAY - DAY 30

SmallishBeans x Mononoke

Minecraft youtuber SmallishBeans (aka Joel) drawn in the style of Mononoke. He is in a traditional Japanese outfit which is light pink and green with sakura blossoms along the sides. He is wearing red face paint reminiscent of a tanuki and long green nails. Behind him is a painting of cherry blossoms. The entire image has a papery texture. Next to Joel is a rectangle with a green-yellow-red gradient which has his YouTube handle written vertically inside it in black. This text looks like its been painted with an ink brush.

For Joel I chose the gorgeous anime mini series, Mononoke!

I chose this for Joel because Mononoke is the most beautiful anime I have ever seen. Others have come close, but Mononoke is number one for me. The bright colors, detail, and texture variation remind me a lot of Joel's base.

The show is animated with a paper texture and looks like a moving Edo era ukiyo-e woodblock print. Still images don't do the show justice, so please go watch it.

Do note, however, that the show is technically horror. The series is beautiful but very eerie and touches on dark topics. It also has a lot of surreal imagery that could be upsetting to some people, so discretion is advised.

To learn more about Mononoke and see my style references, go below the cut.

@hermitadaymay

(Gamers Outreach fundraiser)

Mononoke is the story of a nameless person known only as the Medicine Seller who wanders Edo era Japan. The enigmatic figure seeks out restless spirits called mononoke who bind themselves to negative emotion and haunt the living. The Medicine Seller finds ways to get close to the spirits and learns their purpose for lingering in the human world, then attempts to exorcise them. Every two to three episodes follows the story of an new exorcism.

The draw of the show, in addition to its beauty, comes from unravelling the mystery behind each mononoke, since the Medicine Seller can't perform an exorcism until he understands what happened to cause the spirit to become attached to a specific place or person.

The show feels almost like a detective story, but a really creepy one where you're not really sure what's going on half the time. Mononoke is unique, and definitely not everyone's cup of tea. However, even if the genre isn't your vibe, it's definitely worth watching at least some of it for the visuals alone.

Style references:

The Medicine Seller from Mononoke. He is an elegant looking man with large pointed ears and long, light brown hair. He has pale skin, purple eyes, and red face paint that surrounds his eyes and highlights the bridge of his nose. He is wearing a purple bandana over his hair and is dressed in a light blue traditional Japanese outfit (I am sorry, I don’t know what its called, it looks like a kimono to me but I don’t have much knowledge about this). In this image he is staring down the viewer and holding up the palm of his hand in a ’stop’ gesture. Behind him is a painted background of cherry blossom trees. The entire image has a papery texture.

The show has a papery texture behind the animation, making even very simple shots look really detailed and beautiful.

The medicine seller viewed from a low angle. He is inside the most colorful building you can imagine with busy patterns along all the walls and the stairwell above him. The ceiling is checkered, there are blue columns with floral patterns, and behind and to the sides of the Medicine Seller are what appear to be giant aquarium tanks populated by goldfish. These tanks also have a floral pattern on them. The dominant colors in the image is light blue and a muted red and the entire scene has a papery texture under it.

Some episodes reach hyperpop levels of colors and patterns, though still using paper-like texture throughout. The results are stunning - I remember pausing episodes on my very first viewing just to take in some beautiful scenes.

A chaotic and colorful image that looks like a collage of Edo era woodblock prints that have been brightly recolored. In the centre is a rectangle with a green-yellow-red gradient that has the name of the show written in Japanese inside it in a large ink brush font. The text is written vertically and beside it, also vertical, is the name of the show in English letters in a small type face that looks like it came from an old typewriter. On top of the rectangle is a cat in human Edo-era clothing. To the right of the title is the medicine seller, who is standing in a 3/4 view and looking at the viewer. The rest of the image is a chaotic collage which includes a crowd of people on a yellow bridge, a red god or demon of some kind that I don’t recognize, an old Japanese building, and a wave that resembles The Great Wave of Kanagawa, which is a famous 1830s ukiyo-e woodblock print by the artist Hokusai.

The title design in a piece of art for Mononoke.

HERMIT A DAY MAY - DAY 23

TangoTek x Yu-Gi-Oh

A drawing of Minecraft youtuber TangoTek in his blue season 9 Decked Out dungeon master skin in the style of Yu-Gi-Oh. He is smiling wickedly and throwing a bunch of game pieces at the viewer which resemble Etho, Cubfan, GeminiTay, Hypnotizd, GoodTimesWithScar, a trident drowned, a ravager, and a warden. Above him is his name written in white in a regal, 3-D looking font with his name written again in red in katakana behind it.

For Tango I picked Yu-Gi-Oh!!

Most people know Yu-Gi-Oh! as a cartoon and card game, but in the original story the pharoah spirit who possesses Yugi is known as the King of Games, as in, all games. So who better to represent Yu-Gi-Oh! than the creator and dungeon master of Decked Out, the ultimate game within a game?

To learn more about Yu-Gi-Oh! and see my style references, continue below the cut.

@hermitadaymay

(The King of Games would definitely donate to Gamers Outreach)

Yu-Gi-Oh! is a manga and anime series about a boy named Yugi Mutou who solves a cursed puzzle from ancient Egypt and is then possessed by the spirit of a ruthless Pharoah who has lost all his memories.

"Ruthless?" I can hear fans of the anime saying. "The Pharoah is a good guy!"

Incorrect! He only becomes a good guy later. Early on he is literally Ancient Egyptian Jigsaw.

In the manga, the Pharoah takes over Yugi's body whenever Yugi is in danger, whether he wants it or not, and manipulates people into agreeing to rigged, high stakes Shadow Games. Once they inevitably lose, he traps them in a Penalty Game (a poetic justice torture scenario) for the rest of their lives or possibly all of eternity depending on the situation. It's really messed up! Highlights of early Yu-Gi-Oh Penalty Games include:

Lighting a guy on fire

Blinding a guy

Telltale Heart-ing a guy

Driving a guy so crazy his rips out his own eye

Blowing a guy up

Envenomating a guy with his own pet scorpion

Electrocuting people

Forcing a guy to endure an illusion of eternal zombie attacks

Trapping people in hell forever

...and more!

The show is way more family friendly and follows a significantly mellowed-out Pharoah and his friends as they battle bad guys with card games that summon monsters to fight on their behalf. It's pretty fun an campy!

However, Yu-Gi-Oh! the show is fairly well known so I also wanted to take this opportunity to introduce everyone to season 0 manga Pharoah, who is literally a serial killing ghost with a gambling problem that's possessing a 16 year old.

If you had an Egyptology phase as a kid, give Yu-Gi-Oh! a watch. If you watched Yu-Gi-Oh! as a kid, go read the early manga.

Style references:

An image of the Pharoah from Yu-Gi-Oh. Technically this is Yugi Mutou's body, but Yugi and the Pharoah look pretty much the same anyway (you do get to see flashbacks to Egypt later in the show) so it doesn't matter. He is wearing full body leather with a blue jacket over his shoulders like a cape. On his arm is a machine that has a deck of cards in it and a surface to play cards - the machine is not operating in the picture but when it's on it projects holograms of monsters. Around the Pharoah's neck is a big metal pyramid charm on a chain. His hair is indescribable but I will try. Picture a guy with spikey black hair. Spikier. Now imagine the spikes are massive and basically making the silhouette of a starfish. Now imagine his bangs are blonde lightning bolts that go over the starfish arms but also have long strands in the front that are still bangs. The black starfish spikes are also outlined in purplish-red, like he has frosted tips but purplish-red. Also his eyes are the same purplish-red color. Peak anime protagonist design if you ask me.

There he is, the King of Games. The heart of the cards guides him but he also full on just, like, cheats too.

An image thats split across the middle in a dramatic diagonal. On the left is a tan guy in profile with really spikey sandy blonde hair and purple eyes. He is smiling maliciously and has a golden eye glowing on his forehead. He also has a cool spiked dangly earring. On the right is a really pale guy with brown eyes and white fluffy-but-still-spikey hair. He is glaring towards the viewer. The whole image has a purple fog over it because they are in the Shadow Realm. Both of these guys are villains and as a preteen watching this show it was very cool when they fought each other. Evil Bakura was my fav and Evil Malik is literally the worst.

Malik, on the left, and Bakura, on the right. These two are villains from the show who are also teenagers possessed by (evil) Egyptian spirits that were trapped in cursed metal knick-knacks. Everyone in this show has Hair with a capital H.

The word Yu-Gi-Oh! written in a 3D, metallic looking font. The letters are in a silvery white serif font and are designed to look embossed and pointy in the middle, like looking down on a pyramid from above. Behind the English text is the same name written in red kanji (I assume - I can't read kanji).

The Yu-Gi-Oh! title design.
