HERMIT A DAY MAY - DAY 29
Hypnotizd x Gargoyles

For Hypno I chose the fantastic cartoon Gargoyles!
Hypno gives me cool 90s guy vibes and Gargoyles was my absolute favourite non-anime cartoon as a kid, so I had to include it! And, honestly, I just thought it'd be fun to draw Hypno as a gargoyle. I love the way he turned out.
To learn more about Gargoyles, one of the best cartoons ever, please continue below the cut!

(Congratulations on raising over $1000 for Gamers Outreach - lets keep going!)
The story of Gargoyles follows a group of warrior creatures called gargoyles who lived alongside and defended humans over 1000 years go. Despite acting as protectors, they were feared by humans and slaughtered in their sleep. The survivors of the massacre, a group of 5 men and their pet, were frozen in stone for eternity by a curse and doomed to never awaken again.
However, 1000 years in the future, an eccentric billionaire named Xanatos found a way to break the curse and brought the gargoyles back to life in modern Manhattan.
The story primarily follows the displaced gargoyles as they struggle to adjust to the shock of waking up in an unfamiliar future as the last members of their species.
While the show has plenty of action, as the gargoyles secretly protect the humans who live alongside them, the show is rather deep, often tackling nuanced issues like prejudice, mourning, and finding your identity in a culture that is not your own. Gargoyles also references a ton of mythology and literature and is arguably, in addition to the main plot with the gargoyles, an adaptation of multiple Shakespeare plays.
If you've never watched Gargoyles, I highly recommend it! It's one of the best serialized cartoons out there and I say that having also seen Avatar: the Last Airbender so you know I mean it.
Style references:

This is Goliath, the leader of the gargoyles and the a dual protagonist alongside his human love interest, Elisa Maza (who is one of my favourite female leads in anything ever). I would also like to add that Elisa is mixed race (Nigerian on her mother's side and indigenous, mostly Hopi, on her father's side) which was really unusual for a TV protagonist in the 90s. I just think that's cool, good job Gargoyles.

Goliath and Elisa - I just wanted to show you how cute they are with each other. Love is real and you can find it with this detective lady and her 1000 year old Scottish bat creature friend.

The Gargoyles title design.

SmallishBeans x Mononoke

For Joel I chose the gorgeous anime mini series, Mononoke!
I chose this for Joel because Mononoke is the most beautiful anime I have ever seen. Others have come close, but Mononoke is number one for me. The bright colors, detail, and texture variation remind me a lot of Joel's base.
The show is animated with a paper texture and looks like a moving Edo era ukiyo-e woodblock print. Still images don't do the show justice, so please go watch it.
Do note, however, that the show is technically horror. The series is beautiful but very eerie and touches on dark topics. It also has a lot of surreal imagery that could be upsetting to some people, so discretion is advised.

(Gamers Outreach fundraiser)
Mononoke is the story of a nameless person known only as the Medicine Seller who wanders Edo era Japan. The enigmatic figure seeks out restless spirits called mononoke who bind themselves to negative emotion and haunt the living. The Medicine Seller finds ways to get close to the spirits and learns their purpose for lingering in the human world, then attempts to exorcise them. Every two to three episodes follows the story of an new exorcism.
The draw of the show, in addition to its beauty, comes from unravelling the mystery behind each mononoke, since the Medicine Seller can't perform an exorcism until he understands what happened to cause the spirit to become attached to a specific place or person.
The show feels almost like a detective story, but a really creepy one where you're not really sure what's going on half the time. Mononoke is unique, and definitely not everyone's cup of tea. However, even if the genre isn't your vibe, it's definitely worth watching at least some of it for the visuals alone.
Style references:

The show has a papery texture behind the animation, making even very simple shots look really detailed and beautiful.

Some episodes reach hyperpop levels of colors and patterns, though still using paper-like texture throughout. The results are stunning - I remember pausing episodes on my very first viewing just to take in some beautiful scenes.

The title design in a piece of art for Mononoke.

HERMIT A DAY MAY - DAY 23
TangoTek x Yu-Gi-Oh

For Tango I picked Yu-Gi-Oh!!
Most people know Yu-Gi-Oh! as a cartoon and card game, but in the original story the pharoah spirit who possesses Yugi is known as the King of Games, as in, all games. So who better to represent Yu-Gi-Oh! than the creator and dungeon master of Decked Out, the ultimate game within a game?
To learn more about Yu-Gi-Oh! and see my style references, continue below the cut.
@hermitadaymay
(The King of Games would definitely donate to Gamers Outreach)
Yu-Gi-Oh! is a manga and anime series about a boy named Yugi Mutou who solves a cursed puzzle from ancient Egypt and is then possessed by the spirit of a ruthless Pharoah who has lost all his memories.
"Ruthless?" I can hear fans of the anime saying. "The Pharoah is a good guy!"
Incorrect! He only becomes a good guy later. Early on he is literally Ancient Egyptian Jigsaw.
In the manga, the Pharoah takes over Yugi's body whenever Yugi is in danger, whether he wants it or not, and manipulates people into agreeing to rigged, high stakes Shadow Games. Once they inevitably lose, he traps them in a Penalty Game (a poetic justice torture scenario) for the rest of their lives or possibly all of eternity depending on the situation. It's really messed up! Highlights of early Yu-Gi-Oh Penalty Games include:
Lighting a guy on fire
Blinding a guy
Telltale Heart-ing a guy
Driving a guy so crazy his rips out his own eye
Blowing a guy up
Envenomating a guy with his own pet scorpion
Electrocuting people
Forcing a guy to endure an illusion of eternal zombie attacks
Trapping people in hell forever
...and more!
The show is way more family friendly and follows a significantly mellowed-out Pharoah and his friends as they battle bad guys with card games that summon monsters to fight on their behalf. It's pretty fun an campy!
However, Yu-Gi-Oh! the show is fairly well known so I also wanted to take this opportunity to introduce everyone to season 0 manga Pharoah, who is literally a serial killing ghost with a gambling problem that's possessing a 16 year old.
If you had an Egyptology phase as a kid, give Yu-Gi-Oh! a watch. If you watched Yu-Gi-Oh! as a kid, go read the early manga.
Style references:

There he is, the King of Games. The heart of the cards guides him but he also full on just, like, cheats too.

Malik, on the left, and Bakura, on the right. These two are villains from the show who are also teenagers possessed by (evil) Egyptian spirits that were trapped in cursed metal knick-knacks. Everyone in this show has Hair with a capital H.

The Yu-Gi-Oh! title design.

what are these nerds talking about?
kinda just a redraw of the screenshot. original under cut :]
