that night in the storm,

perhaps your panicked breaths

soothed me

as did the rain pelting tin -

or perhaps you hid,

as much behind the drumming roof

as behind the fear stuffed in your mouth

alongside your fist.

for whatever reason, i did not wake

and you told me in the morning,

while sunlight shining stopped shadows

in my voice from whispering

“how i wished you’d woken me

so i could have held you”.

and is that how the fireworks

drowned out the anticipation

thundering in my heart?

i was so sure,

as you leant against my chest

and watched the coloured sky,

that you would hear my longing

seeping through my skin

to join the spectacle

someone sleeps on the floor;

the moment passes;

a nightmare suffered alone;

the lift door closes

(i let you go every single time)
