I've seen a lot of people say how hilarious it is that the Crows feel like they can trust Kaz with their wildest secrets because he's probably seen an done worse, and I fully agree...which is such an extra L for the guy Kaz dropped off the building lmao

It's like...

Nina: "I've falsely accused my crush of being a slaver"

Kaz, wiping the blood off his gloves after he literally just ripped a man's eye out: "Haha nice."

Jesper: "I have so many debts that my father might lose the farm"

Kaz: "I beat a man to death with his own bone once."

Wylan: "I can't read :("

Kaz: "Then?? Hire someone who can?? I can't walk properly, was I NOT supposed to get a cane I can bust peoples' kneecaps with??"

Inej: "I KILLED someone!"

Kaz: "LOL, tell me about it. Wait why are you crying."

Random asshole: "There's a girl in the Menagerie that will do anything for me because she'll die if I tell on her"

Kaz: "What the fuck is wrong with you"

Like imagine being such a piece of shit that even DIRTYHANDS is disgusted with you 😭

gosh but like we spent hundreds of years looking up at the stars and wondering ā€œis there anybody out thereā€ and hoping and guessing and imagining

because we as a species were so lonely and we wanted friends so bad, we wanted to meet other species and we wanted to talk to them and we wanted to learn from them and to stop being the only people in the universe

and we started realizing that things were maybe not going so good for us– we got scared that we were going to blow each other up, we got scared that we were going to break our planet permanently, we got scared that in a hundred years we were all going to be dead and gone and even if there were other people out there, we’d never get to meet them

and then

we built robots?

and we gave them names and we gave them brains made out of silicon and we pretended they were people and we told them hey you wanna go exploring, and of course they did, because we had made them in our own image

and maybe in a hundred years we won’t be around any more, maybe yeah the planet will be a mess and we’ll all be dead, and if other people come from the stars we won’t be around to meet them and say hi! how are you! we’re people, too! you’re not alone any more!, maybe we’ll be gone

but we built robots, who have beat-up hulls and metal brains, and who have names; and if the other people come and say, who were these people? what were they like?

the robots can say, when they made us, they called us discovery; they called us curiosity; they called us explorer; they called us spirit. they must have thought that was important.

and they told us to tell you hello.

Some of you are still in weird denial about the relationship between the Doctor and Rose.

Seriously, I just saw a post saying that the Doctor opened up more to Martha and Donna than he ever did with Rose. That is like, flat wrong. Flat. You don't understand perspective - the nuance of their story. The in-between-bits we infer but don't get to see on screen and the implications of their comments and comfort toward each other.

Do you people realize that the first thing he did was take her to destruction of her planet, to share with her that his planet is gone and he's the last one left? Do you realize that she's the first one he travels with after losing that planet, and how much that must mean?

Do you people realize that Rose tells stories of traveling with the ninth Doctor that we never, ever get to see? These things still happened, are still canon, which imply a great amount of time that isn't on screen?

Did you notice how close the Doctor, Rose and Jack become, despite having literally only two episodes together before they get chucked into the Game Station? Those three did not just travel to two places, folks. That could have been months, years, that are just between them.

Do you understand the implications of Ten's song after he regenerates?

Do you really not notice how Rose specifically refers to their first trip as a date, and how he doesn't deny it? Do you realize that, in The Impossible Planet, the Doctor implies that he would live with Rose on the slow path, and that he'd like it?

(Do you realize that he does, as Tentoo?)

Do you honestly think that they don't talk? By Doomsday, Rose is learning how to fly the TARDIS.

Here's a thought. Established on screen in The Parting of the Ways, Rose says she doesn't remember how they escaped the Game Station. If that's true, how does she know that she's the one who turned the Dalek emperor to dust? How does she know?

We never saw that happen, but we didn't need to see it. There is an entire relationship worth of conversations over breakfast and hugs goodnight and trips to space markets for trinkets and coffee that we don't need to see to understand that their relationship was deeper, open and more honest than what we get to see on screen.

Ten opened up to the audience via his conversations with Martha and Donna on screen, but he was only able to do so then because he got to do it behind the curtains with Rose first.

I fucking love how like the original cast recording of Hadestown in Wait For Me it sounds like Hermes is mocking Orpheus, but in the Broadway Cast Recording, Hermes sounds like a dad trying to gauge how upset his son will be about the fact that his hamster died and whether or not he'll notice if he replaces it.

"heeeeey the big artiste šŸ˜… ain'tcha workin on your masterpiece???" versus "'Eeeey! The big artiste! Ain'tcha workin' on yer masterpiece?šŸ˜† "

But in all seriousness, he goes from in the OG Cast Recording as just a "spectator". Supposedly he doesn't care, he's seen this happen before, it's no big deal (by the end though I have never heard someone sound so defeated and close to tears than OG Hermes, oh my fucking gods. The way he so softly goes, "Well. Alright," at the beginning of Road to Hell II, and his voice breaks because he's seen this before and knew how it ended and gods he wish it ended differently).

But then in the Broadway recording, we've got a different Broadway actor playing Hermes. From the start of it, you get told Hermes practically raised the boy! You're given how they've got a close relationship, how fond he is, how he protects and guides him and encourages his music and tells him stories to inspire him- 'cause the muses ain't always there.

So in Wait For Me- …he sounds desperate, half begging Orpheus not to go, half begging him to just come back alive. It goes from the OG recording's lighthearted joking, "aw you ain't reaaaally goin', but if you do šŸ‘€ here's how you get in in one piece," to the Broadway recording being so full of fear of desperation, of terror, because he's not supposed to go down there and it's dangerous and Hermes might never see him again. From joking around to, "I know I can't stop you, but goddammit, don't you dare die."

His voice is soft and scratchy, telling a secret and scolding Orpheus, making sure the instructions stick. It's something whispered in a dark alley or into a crack in a wall, not something sung in the autumn sunlight, by a joking trickster who doesn't care whether you stay or go. It's sung by someone who's scared because he loves Orpheus and he knows where he's going.

Alright everyone, I saw a post recently talking about Hadestown costuming, specifically in reference to the removal of layers of clothing representing the characters revealing more of themselves as people.

I want to talk about an aspect of the costume design as well, but instead of being about the bigger themes of the costuming overall, I'm going to focus in on one aspect of one costume because I find it very interesting.

I present to you Mr Hades in his Act II attire:

Alright Everyone, I Saw A Post Recently Talking About Hadestown Costuming, Specifically In Reference

There's a lot that's been discussed about his costume both in terms of aesthetics and what it represents from a character and storytelling aspect. I'm not looking at the costume as a whole though. Specifically, I want to talk about the bands he's wearing around his arms because they are far more interesting as a design choice than I think most people realize.

Those bands are called sleeve garters. Yes, garters weren't just for holding stockings up on your legs or to be used as a part of modern wedding traditions. In the past, men would wear specifically designed garters on their shirtsleeves.

Nothing strange about that. Was quite common back in the latter part of the 19th century and into the early 20th century because ready made shirts were all made with a single extra long sleeve length. Men wore the garters to let them customize the sleeve length to fit when wearing the shirt under a jacket and so that the shirt cuffs wouldn't become dirty from daily use.

Okay. It's normal. Why is it worth focusing on then?

Because the sleeve garter was normal for the working class. The wealthy would get their shirts tailored and have the sleeves adjusted to fit them. Not wearing sleeve garters was another show--if a slightly more subtle one--of wealth.

We know Hades is wealthy. The lyrics make that very clear to the audience, so why is he wearing them?

Like what they do with the tattoo, it manages to call back to the idea of Hades having built himself up. Those sleeve garters are something a working man would wear, and for someone who is as conspicuous about his wealth and power as Hades is, it's an interesting choice. He dresses in fine suits and doesn't have to worry about getting his hands dirty anymore now that he has workers, but he still chooses to wear sleeve garters. Personally, I like to think he has a number of little behaviors that call back to that time when he wasn't the king of silver and of gold. Things he isn't even consciously aware of but hasn't managed to shake because he did know what it was like to have nothing.

The truth is probably that he wears them because aesthetic. It looks appropriately old-timey and also just looks good as a part of the whole ensemble, especially with the snakeskin design on them. Excellent costuming choice there. However, if that was an intentional choice, I have nothing but absolute love for whoever had that idea.

I love deep diving into the symbolism in The Hunger Games, there's so many layers in the writing, so much thought placed in seemingly unimportant narrative that it boggles the mind if you go searching for meaning. Classic literature is rich with symbolism, especially Christian symbolism. Suzanne Collins is a master at writing and crafted these books to bursting.

So, Peeta Mellark.

His first name, Peeta, a Greek flatbread (pita), but also a nod at Saint Peter. The feast of Saint Peter is also called Lammas Day or Loaf Mass Day, a harvest festival. It’s customary to bring to a Christian church a loaf made from the new crop, which began to be harvested at Lammastide, which falls on August 1, at the halfway point between the summer solstice and the autumn September equinox.

Mellark, a combination of the word malarkey and meadowlark. The meadowlark is a yellow breasted song bird that makes its nests on the ground rather than trees, in small hallows, covering it with grasses or animal hairs. Basically tiny bird caves.

I Love Deep Diving Into The Symbolism In The Hunger Games, There's So Many Layers In The Writing, So

Malarkey: most commonly defined as speech or writing designed to obscure, mislead, or impress; bunkum, BUT also thought to be derived from Greek Ī¼Ī±Ī»Ī±ĪŗĻŒĻ‚ (malakós, ā€œsoft; compliant, meek; gentle, mellow, mild, mild-manneredā€

Not long ago I came across the Bible quote while researching more deeply into the symbolism of pearls.

ā€œGive not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.ā€

After a fair amount of analyzing I've come to believe it's actually one of the most important themes in the series. The gist of it means don’t give away what is precious to those that can’t appreciate its worth.

Symbolically Peeta offers himself to Katniss, repeatedly, throughout the series. The words

ā€œneither cast ye pearls before swine lest they trample them under their feet,ā€

are what first caught my attention, both symbolic and literal, reminding me of the scene when Peeta burns the bread. His mother beats him and then instructs him to feed the bread to the pigs. Instead he passes the loaves along to Katniss.

Katniss describes the bread Peeta gives her

ā€œIt was good hearty bread, filled with raisins and nuts.ā€

But a pearl isn’t bread, is it? Pearls symbolize a lot of different things, but specifically in the Bible it can symbolize anything Christ-like, from Christ himself, to the gospel of the church. Christ said

ā€œI am the living bread that came down from heavenā€

Thus a pearl could symbolize bread, in the right context. When I went to research this train of thought further I was shocked to find a whole bunch of recipes instead of a whole bunch of quotes. Christ’s Bread, or Christopsomo. A Greek Orthodox bread made at Christmas. A rich bread filled with raisins and nuts.

I Love Deep Diving Into The Symbolism In The Hunger Games, There's So Many Layers In The Writing, So

I always thought it curious that the author would choose a name with a Greek origin when so many in D12 have the last names that seem British in origin (Everdeen, Hawthorn, Cartwright, Abernathy), and that there must be more to the name. Therefore I believe it’s no coincidence then, that this Greek bread is so similar to the bread that Peeta gifts to Katniss. It’s further evidence that the author purposefully meant to represent Peeta as Christ-like. Peeta offering his body as sacrifice to save Katniss is a theme that repeats over and over in the series. The strongest example of this, in terms of Christ-like symbolism, was his sacrifice of facing Cato in front of the tracker jacker tree to allow Katniss to escape and hide. That tree is a nod to the Hanging Tree, specifically the line:

Where the dead man called out for his love to flee.

ā€œWhat are you still doing here?ā€ he hisses at me. I stare uncomprehendingly as a trickle of water drips off a sting under his ear. His whole body starts sparkling as if he’s been dipped in dew. ā€œAre you mad?ā€ He’s prodding me with the shaft of the spear now. ā€œGet up! Get up!ā€ I rise, but he’s still pushing at me. What? What is going on? He shoves me away from him hard. ā€œRun!ā€ he screams. ā€œRun!ā€

The Hanging tree itself is symbolic of both the Tree of Life, and the cross that Christ was crucified on. With TBOSAS we know the origin of the song, but the actual song written by Suzanne Collins was most likely inspired by the song The Hanging Tree (written for the movie of the same name back in 1959) and the song Strange Fruit made popular by Billy Holiday and became a popular civil rights ballad. I am planning a separate post about the song and how Peeta is symbolically the lover in the song.

This death and resurrection of Christ imagery continues with Katniss later bandaging Peeta and bringing him to a cave where he nearly died, and then left the cave healed three days later. There's so much more, but I'll leave that for another post.

But what about the other part of that quote?

ā€œGive not that which is holy unto the dogs, [lest they] turn again and rend you.ā€

This applies to Katniss, rather than Peeta. Peeta is what's holy, symbolically, as reinforced by the pearl that he gives her in Catching Fire, and that represents him symbolically in Mockingjay. He was literally rended by dogs at the cornucopia in The hunger Games, but she doesn't cast him aside till the end of the book.

ā€œGive not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.ā€

There is metaphorical meaning in the entire quote as well as this theme continues in both Catching Fire and Mockingjay. Peeta offers himself to Katniss and she "casts" him aside. She realizes this towards the end of Mockingjay.

Seeing it in his hands, it’s like Finnick’s echoing what Haymitch just said, that I’ve cast off Peeta.

She finally realizes his true value, even after he's been hijacked, and refuses to allow him to be killed, and instead of casting him away she does her best to keep him.

It’s a long shot, it’s suicide maybe, but I do the only thing I can think of. I lean in and kiss Peeta full on the mouth. His whole body starts shuddering, but I keep my lips pressed to his until I have to come up for air. My hands slide up his wrists to clasp his. ā€œDon’t let him take you from me.ā€ Peeta’s panting hard as he fights the nightmares raging in his head. ā€œNo. I don’t want to . . .ā€ I clench his hands to the point of pain. ā€œStay with me.ā€ His pupils contract to pinpoints, dilate again rapidly, and then return to something resembling normalcy. ā€œAlways,ā€ he murmurs.

This is not to say that she never values him or cares for him before the end of Mockingjay, there is plenty of evidence to suggest she fully loved him by the end of The Hunger Games, only that she did not learn the lesson to "cast not what is holy" till then.

I wrap my arms around his neck, feel his arms hesitate before they embrace me. Not as steady as they once were, but still warm and strong. A thousand moments surge through me. All the times these arms were my only refuge from the world. Perhaps not fully appreciated then, but so sweet in my memory, and now gone forever.

This theme is also apparent in the narrative in that the Rebellion abandoned Peeta, representing both which is holy and the pearl, to the Capitol. The Capitol did not value his worth, nor see him as a treasure. They tortured and hijacked him "trample them under their feet" , and used him to "rend" the Rebellion by programing him to kill Katniss, the symbol of the Rebellion.
