YESSSSS me sitting my family down to analyze everything about the movie also that one 10 second scene where the guidance counselor is talking about how every student has a story and Miles is an “immigrant son” in a “struggling household” and his parents jump to clarify that he is neither of those things but the guidance counselor doesn’t listen and is still insistent on that tortured minority image AND ALSO that one scene of Miles and Rio where he says this is his life and she says no this is my and your father’s life and the life of everyone who came before you and sacrificed to get you here and wished they could live the life you have been given and this barely touches the burden and the absolutely opposing trajectories that the two generations live their lives with and the way the spiders and the other characters exhibit that

Got back from seeing the movie again and a tiny theme I liked was the solidarity in the younger POC generation vs the older gen.

Margo, Hobie, Pavitr and Miles all had eachother’s back. They fought together, they helped eachother in small ways like Hobie telling Miles to use the palms, and big ways like Miles saving Captain Singh and Margo letting Miles go “home”.

They could’ve stopped him, they could’ve not helped eachother but they did. Because they understood and they all realized what was wrong with the Spider Society. All of them at the end came together to support and help Miles, in the way the rest of the spiders couldn’t and didn’t.

And when you put that into perspective with Miguel and Jessica, older POC that gave no support. They believe that Miles has to suffer in order to become Spider-Man, that pain will always have to happen.

But the others don’t believe that, they know that best way to be a hero is uplift and help eachother. Often the parents, the older generation compromise their morals and others for the future, for them to grow up safer and yet the future generation always has to reckon with the consequences of those actions without even having a say in the first place.

That’s a damn message, and I love that they used the younger poc generation to show that because this does happen in real life, there is a difference and our parents, our grandparents believe that pain has to happen for our identity to be created.

Just watched Spider-Man across the spider verse and my life has honestly been changed I sat there for half the moving wondering what it must feel like to work in a project like this. People had to sit there and write rewrite and edit every word every sentence every interaction animate every scene in that particular way choose to colour every shot with those specific colours rvery song every soundtrack choice the way the music overwhelmed the audience then switched to being almost outside the scene was insane. All of it was intentional. I want to sit and analyse everything and write essays upon essays on it all. The costumes the way each character was animated in a different style. Was there a significance to Hobie’s varying between colorful and black and white? What the reason behind the scene between Gwen and her dad altering colors like that? Everything about this movie was madness to me and it feels like it’s going to change so much. The emphasis on the canons on Spider-Man’s story that paralleled the Hero’s Journey and Miles’ questioning and criticism of it!!! The idea of having to let things be because they have to go that way and so they must be accepted because sacrifices must be made and the refusal to accept that in the movie’s storyline which is a reflection of society’s current attempt to break the mold on so many traditional narratives. I have so many thoughts. This movie is truly inexplicable to me.

I like personality quizzes in theory but in practice I just get irritated by the semantic ambiguity of literally every question. "On a spectrum from scientific to artistic what are you" motherfucker I literally wax poetic about the laws of thermodynamics where the fuck does that land on your spectrum

Kaz Isn't Actually Motivated By Greed

Or at least, not primarily. Don't get me wrong, his stated primary driving factor is getting the money he was promised from Van Eck, but his reasoning isn't actually greed-based. Kaz's desire for money is goal-oriented and his fixation on it during the duology is fairness-based. He initially wants his share of the money because it will allow him to split from Per Haskell and start his revenge scheme over Pekka. He then pursues getting it with such zeal because Van Eck broke their deal and Kaz (rightly) feels cheated; Van Eck contracted him for a job, which he successfully completed, and then refused to pay him for it.

He fixates on destroying Van Eck because like Pekka Rollins, he broke his deal with Kaz and scammed him out of his money. It's the scamming and deal-breaking (and his inability to figure it out beforehand) that hit Kaz's pride and motivate him. If it were really just about the money, he could have gotten it any number of ways. But despite talking a big game about worshipping money and it being his primary motivating factor, he throws away an awful lot of opportunities to get and keep it during the duology:

He doesn't take the Ice Court job until he's shown the effects of parem and promised 30 million kruge (enough that when split he could realize his dreams of splitting from Haskell and taking out Rollins)

He gives up his shares in the Crow Club and Fifth Harbor to Pekka in order to rescue Inej and kickstart the Sugar Silo scheme

He doesn't abandon Inej after she's taken by Van Eck to sell Kuwei to the highest bidder, even though that would have been the most logical and lucrative option (as both Inej and Matthias think about)

He liquidates all of his existing financial assets to free Inej AND tells her where his emergency stash is so she and the rest of the Crows can get out of the city safely

He gives Rotty and Specht Per Haskell's share of the Ice Court Heist money (recognizing their loyalty and help) and Nina Matthias's share (to somewhat compensate her for her grief and fund her new cause) instead of keeping it for himself

He buys Inej a ship with HIS part of the money

And while several of the things he abandons money for are for Inej, to keep her safe and free and happy, the rest of the Crows and the Dregs at large benefit too. So do people he's probably never met. Pre-canon!Kaz fixed up the Slat with his own money so it's a safe-ish place for the Dregs to live, for example, and in Crooked Kingdom he totally goes along with Nina's plan to get all of Ketterdam's Grisha onto the boat to Ravka after a mostly token protest even though it massively complicates his plans.

It's pretty clear that no matter what he says, at the end of the day Kaz values loyalty, fairness, and keeping his promises more than he values money. The money is just a means to an end for him: he wants it because it will a) allow him to have an amount of safety and security for himself and the people he cares about (and those who have pledged their loyalty to him), b) let him keep his deals with and promises to said people, and c) give him the ability to one-up Pekka and destroy his empire.

This. This. This.

things I want to see in any future installments of the grishaverse (by Leigh bardugo) include:

- inej doing her pirate thing

- jesper and Wylan chilling in their garden as explosions go off in the background

- kaz breaking into little/big palace and stealing the crown

- said crown being sat on his shelf back in Ketterdam

-zoya unaible to do anything about it as she then had to admit of the crown being stolen in the first place

- nina sends him another crown

-kaz starts a collection

-he still has Alinas hair dress thingy from the show

-nikolai tried to steal it once as sturmhond

-it ended tragically and he had to run to the Ravkan Embassy to avoid several explosive devises set up on his way

-he lands into the geldcanal at one point and swims/rows his say down towards the embassies

-jesper and wylan wave at him as he goes past, having no idea whats happened, wondering what kaz will them happened when he comes over for the evening

-inej at the time is having tea with Nina and Zoya at some royal party in os kervo making deals between Ravka and fjerda

-she knows

-both about kaz s security regarding his little collecting (purely gathered trough spite) and Nikolai’s ongoing attempt to get the crown back as they’ll need it for some function

-she also knows that kaz doesn’t have the crown, he gave it to her for safekeeping

-its in her bag, Zoya does not know, and has not stopped glaring at her as if kaz would somehow feel that glare through Inej.

-nina suspects because of certain bones imbedded into the crown

-she is trying not to burst into laughter and cause an international incident between their countries

-inej is kicking Nina under the table, she is starting to want to disappear into her captains hat that kaz had bought for her. Zoya is starting affect the weather

-dealing with pirates is easier than dealing with Zoya, Nina agrees while she’s trying to distract Zoya so inej can make her escape

-Alina just sips her tea, glad to be invited

I harp on the movies a lot but whoever was in charge of that closing shot of Mockingjay (Part 1), with a broken Katniss and Peeta in the same frame, Katniss staring with longing, horrified pity at hysterical, exhausted, hijacked Peeta, as “Finding Peeta” (from the first movie) plays in the background and everyone in 13 is chant-cheering that they’ve freed the victors when both Katniss and Peeta are clearly visually still bound (her by the collar and him by the bed straps) … give that person a huge raise because that was a damn good artistic decision

The Seven of the Prophecy as the seven deadly sins cause I saw someone briefly mention it and I was intrigued so:

Percy: Wrath (argue with the wall but just Tartarus is enough to prove the point)

Annabeth: Pride (this was the most obvious just take the riddle in BOTL)

Jason: Lust ( TOA series spoilers but literally lowkey what killed him especially considering Dante’s portrayal of lust)

Leo: Gluttony (I don’t think any one else could’ve been gluttony)

Piper: Envy (literally from the beginning it is central to her character and I won’t rant about it on her but it’s a driving force and also she verbalized it herself at times)

Hazel: Greed (just is with everything about her)

Frank: Sloth (more failure to do what should be done than laziness it was just the most fitting to him out of the seven)

Just so we're all on the same page with the writer's strike.

If during the strike, it's announced about AI generated shows. We are not watching them. Not even out of curiosity. Let them fail every AI generated show they try make.

The human voice can not be replaced by AI. Don't let them try.

what is a love story if not falling to your knees and pressing your shaking hands to his wound, as if the desperation of your heart could stem the blood pumping out of his; and what is a love story if not holding out a sticky-sweet handful of death to the greedy cameras; and what is a love story if not your one wish being to send her home, with all the reasons why hanging golden around your neck like a willingly-worn noose; and what is a love story if not hitching yourself to the puppet strings of politicians in a last ditch attempt to save each other across the miles; and what is a love story if not the ever- unspoken mantra “take my life: take it, take it, take it” — and what is a love story if not the burned and blistered realization that offering up your life is not enough, not quite, but that offering your lover’s life back to them might just be? so you plant her primroses in the ash, and you mend his mind with the thread of new memories, and it isn’t pretty, but it is a love story — because what else could it be?

I am a hater of the strong woman loses power at the end of the series and lives a normal domestic life to my bones but I will always defend that ending for Alina Starkov and Katniss Everdeen, it makes perfect sense for their story arcs and literally can be argued to be their driving force at times.

some quick tips for browser search engines (ie google, bing, duckduckgo) that folks might not know:

exact phrases : if you put your search in quotes “like this” then it’ll look for that exact phrase, those words in that order. this is how people find sources from screenshots of text.

ex. “a far green country under a swift sunrise” will search for results that contain the exact phrase “a far green country under a swift sunrise”.

combining phrases : AND, OR, and NOT

ex. “cookie recipe" AND “chocolate chip” will search for results that contain both of those exact phrases

ex. “cookie recipe” NOT “peanut butter” will search for results that have the exact phrase “cookie recipe” and ignore all results that include the phrase “peanut butter”

ex. “chocolate chip” OR “peanut butter” will search for results that contain either of those phrases

please note: using any of these words inside quotes will make your search engine think it’s part of the phrase that it’s looking for! “cookie recipe and chocolate chip” will search for those exact five words in that order.

operations: if you want to use two of the above, put the second part in (parentheses).

ex. “cookie recipe” AND (”chocolate chip” OR “peanut butter”) will look for results that contain the phrase “cookie recipe” and either the phrase “chocolate chip” or the phrase “peanut butter”

ex. “cookie recipe” AND “chocolate chip” (NOT “peanut butter”) will look for results that contain the phrases “cookie recipe” and “chocolate chip” and exclude results that contain the phrase “peanut butter”

specific websites: if you’re looking for a page on a specific site, anywhere in your search, you can specify where to look with the site: command.

ex. “djimon hounsou” site:imdb.com will search the website imdb.com for pages containing the exact phrase “djimon hounsou”

specific file formats: if you’re looking for a specific kind of result, such as a .pdf or an image file like a .png or a .gif, you can specify that with the filetype: command.

ex. “a general history of the pyrates” filetype:pdf will search for .pdf files associated with the exact phase “a general history of the pyrates”

happy searching!

What advice would you give to young or beginning writers?

Read everything. Read the stuff you like and read the stuff you don't think you'll like. Read the things that people think it's good for you to read and read the things they seem worried about you reading. Read prose and poetry and fiction and non-fiction. Get off your phone and read books without interruption. Read the classics and read the cutting edge. Read everything you can get your hands on.

I keep seeing things about Alina and the Darkling so let me just say. They didn’t love each other they understood each other. Not every deep emotional connection is love. Alina felt he was the only one who understood her and the hunger for power she felt and he thought he loved her because she was his only equal. Their understanding each other made them see each other in a different light than how the rest of the world viewed them but saying they loved each other would insinuate they could ever do something for each other at their own cost.

‘My Dutch grandfather used to say, “If you don’t know what to do, do nothing for eight days.”

Dean asked , ‘Why eight?’

‘Less than eight is haste. More than eight is procrastination. Eight days is long enough for the world to shuffle the deck and deal you another hand.’

-Utopia Avenue by David Mitchell
