Honestly The Whole Pro Vs Anti Ship Discourse Never Made Sense To Me. Especially Because I Fall Somewhere

honestly the whole pro vs anti ship discourse never made sense to me. Especially because I fall somewhere in the middle and don’t really identify with either label.

My only real boundaries for stuff that I enjoy shipping/seeing be shipped are pedophilia and incest. That’s it. I don’t give a fuck about age gaps or power imbalances or if it’s ‘abusive’ in canon. And I don’t go out of my way to harass people who do ship things that cross those boundaries, I just block and move on because while I respect their right to ship what they want, I also don’t really feel comfortable interacting with people who explicitly ship incest and/or underage.

And I understand that fiction can and does affect reality sometimes (like propaganda, for example) but most of the time people are smart enough to draw their own conclusions. I don’t like the fact that people go out of their way to write underage fic, sure, but do I harass people who write it and think it should be scrubbed? Fuck no. Write what you want. I guess I just don’t like how black and white the conflict has gotten. And I especially don’t like falling in between pro shipper and anti shipper. Because when I interact with one, I feel like I’m lying to them no matter which it is, and I’m not here to violate peoples DNIs. I’m not ‘pro’ enough to be a pro shipper and I’m not ‘anti’ enough to be an anti shipper.

It makes me feel weird and kinda gross sometimes because I hate conflict. Am I in the wrong here? Any advice?

Technically TECHNICALLY speaking, your attitude counts as "proship"-- which means "other people can write what they want and I'll avoid what I don't like."

It's people who identify as antis who use the term "proship" to mean "revels in the filthiest ideas possible and thinks all darkfic is amazing."

If you don't want to actively censor fanfic, and you don't harass other creators **technically** you count as "proship."

But here is the thing, both terms are flat unecessary.

The term "antiship" came first, and was self-applied by people who were against certain things in fandom shipping. Then the term "proship" started to be used for people to express that they weren't antis and didn't harass people.

But no one needs either term.

I refuse to use either term any more.

Instead of "antis" I say "the fandom pro-censorship crowd" which much more clearly conveys what I mean.

"Doesn't harass other people over ships they don't like" doesn't need a term like "proship" because it's the default.

Not harassing other people over fanfiction, blocking and avoiding fanfiction you don't want to see-- that's ""proship""-- but that's just the default.

"proship" means, (for lack of a better term) "normal" fans who do what they like and block shit they don't like.

And again, both terms are unnecessary, and I refuse to use them.

You know, an interesting tumblr transformation that's happened gradually, and which I've seen no one talk about: ask-culture has essentially dropped off to nothing.

By which I mean, asks used to be WAY more of the tumblr economy. They used to be more common to send, and receive, and see. They were integral to the collaborative, forum-like behavior of old tumblr communities, not even to speak on the HUGE number of ask-blogs that used to exist to only be interacted with in ask-form.

I'm not saying this in a vying-for-attention way but instead in an observational way: I used to get way way more asks in like 2015, even with a fraction of my follower count. I wonder if it's due to the homogenization of social media sites? There's a lot more of this divide between "content creator" and "consumer" instead of just a bunch of peer blogs who would talk to each other. "Asks" aren't really a thing on twitter, are they? And as I understand it, the closest thing to an "ask" on instagram or tiktok would be a creator screenshotting some comment and responding to it in a new reel or video or whatever those content mediums are. Are asks just too tumblr-specific? Is that aspect of the site culture dying out as more and more people converge to using all their social media sites in the same way?

Link appreciation post.

So I am happy that Zelda is more popular than ever due to BOTW but I am saddened that the general perception of Link is based on his BOTW form because that Link, while cool isn't as good of a character as my favorite Links, OOT and TP. Both of which I think are massively underappreciated.

Now OOT Link is often discussed in his relation to the tragedy of his story, of a Hero who was never remembered for the great deeds he had done. A boy forced to grow up too fast. But you know what? I wanna focus on the positive parts of his story.

I want to focus on how he is a contrast to Gannondorf, a man who demanded the spiritual stones and was willing to cause the starvation and murder of many guardian duties to do so. By going out of his way to save others.

When his father figured asked him to delve into danger and try to save him that's what he did. When Darunia who probably jokingly asked this 10 year old to slay the Dodongos after he calmed down Link did it without question.

He does this because it's whats needed of him for his quest but also it's to help out the Gorons who need it. And it's clear no one expected him to do it really, but Darunia honors his deal with him and makes Link an honorary Goron brother. He shows that Link, through his care for others and empathy, his willingness to put his neck on the line for others succeeds where Gannondorf fails.

That's a through line we see throughout the game, after Dodongos cavern and into the other temples you are doing quests to save the sages sure, but those are always on the way of saving people associated with those Temples. Link causes Hyrule to flourish and heal itself throughout his journey, he through his need to save people and show his bravery shows off why he's the weilder of the Triforce of Courage. A power that he probably doesn't even need to kick Gannondorfs ass with.

That's something I love about him. This Link is noble, serious but not uptight. He builds bridges and connections wherever he goes because it's the thing he does best. He throws himself into helping people and saving them even if he bearly knows their name because that's just what Link does. That's who this Link is to the core of his character.

Even if he wasn't the chosen one of his story I'd bet anything that Link would still be leading the fight against Gannondorf instead of hiding away in Kakariko because it's safe. He is a character who was always going to be a hero and that's what qualifies him to be the chosen one. Not the other way around.
